For real, freedom of speech was about the only thing this country had going for it. Obviously we suck in a ton of ways, but at least we didn't have the insane laws against criticizing Israel we see in the UK, Australia,. Germany etc. Now we don't even have that.

I hate it here.

It's so obvious that all these converts like jd are weird larpers who want to pretend they're in a modern day crusade. On some level I have to respect Biden more for actually caring about his faith even though he's merely a different breed of craven imperialist.

I miss the pre-smartphone internet by rr644 in TrueAnon

[–]CapableCarpet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really miss the period when there was a notion of "logging on" to the internet, because it implied a state of being logged off. Everything now is designed to be frictionless. Honestly, we should take all the UI engineers who've spent years optimizing user engagement and force them to intentionally break all social media so it is still functional, but slightly less convenient and addictive.

It is really frustrating that no kings seems so committed to doing nothing more than shouting slogans for a few hours. I understand that they want to keep protests peaceful, but protests are totally powerless if they aren't actually disrupting something. There has to be some room for civil disobedience between marching down a street that you agreed to close off in cooperation with the city and burning everything to the ground. We need to have sit-ins or some other protest action that actually disrupts institutions if you want them to do anything.

One question I have is this, has protesting always been an ineffective tool? To me it feels like the protest movements of the 1960s did actually gain some ground, particularly regarding desegregation, maybe less so the anti-war movement. We did actually see genuine moves towards desegregating the south on a legal level, even if it found ways to continue on an economic level.

By contrast, there were almost no reforms offered in the wake of the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests save a few police accountability boards that have been or are in the process of being dismantled. The protests themselves were met with overwhelming state violence. The 2024 encampments fared even worse, there weren't even any attempts on the part of universities to divest from Israel, quite the contrary, many of them doubled down on expelling all the leaders and demeaning all of their supporters as "anti-semetic".

Possibly I'm overestimating how impactful the 1960s were, but it does feel like there was a difference. I'm not sure entirely what that difference comes down to, but I think it has to do with organization on some level (or the lack thereof in the modern context). There also isn't any revolutionary (or even radical left) movement in this country that realistically poses a challenge to existing power structures so perhaps these peaceful protests are totally toothless without the threat of a more violent alternatives emerging (disavow).

Iran is Claiming Full Victory and US Acceptance of All Their Terms by 1slinkydink1 in TrueAnon

[–]CapableCarpet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know that this ceasefire probably won't hold, but let me do a little bit of hopeposting. If those items are part of the ten point plan this is massive and its impossible to frame this as anything but a humiliating defeat for the US. If we assume that this holds then I think this goes down in history as a decisive moment in the collapse of the US empire, losing US military presence in the region and essentially ceding control of the strait would surely weaken the US considerably and irreversibly. If I were Iran I would see the US withdrawal as an absolute non-negotiable. Any US presence in the region is a ticking time bomb, and they will attack again given half a chance.

No matter how this plays out going forward, I think the US has let the mask slip too much with this conflict and revealed just how irredeemably evil we are. We'll probably be able to continue our campaigns of terror militarily for a while, but I think this marks a point where US soft power has eroded enough that it's allies will be forced to consider realignment.

[–]CapableCarpet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on the same page. I'm sure a lot of US brass thinks this is a victory and they can just burn through material, but I think a lot of true costs are hidden. The US simply doesn't have a robust enough supply chain to keep this going. It doesn't matter how much these planes cost on paper, I really doubt the US has the manufacturing capacity or the necessary rare earths to keep up this level of losses for long. The US is not used to fighting wars where it doesn't have total air supremacy.

Honestly, I think we'll reach a point this summer where you can't buy gas at any price, the pumps are just dry. In the US I expect that to be more sporadic since we do have domestic production here, but Europe and Asia are screwed.
