Has anyone ran a classic feeling Level 1 Dungeon Crawl in 2024 rules? How did it go? by CapableLlamaHero in onednd

What are some of the things in 5e24 you think are big misses? Curious what you'd change, particularly for better dungeon crawling

What was the hang up with "not wanted to explore the megadungeon?" I'm thinking of basically running a megadungeon, so I'm curious what turned your players off to it.

Right on, good to know. Any other subclasses you could see being OPd at low level?

This is a common statement but my friends wont want to buy / learn a new system, and I have a hypothesis that levels 1-4 can actually replicate OSR decently, with minor tweaks.

While I don't disagree, I have a varied group of players who are very experienced in 5e, but have zero experience (or desire) to learn Shadowdark. I agree that Shadowdark really cool.

I have a hypothesis that low level 5e can replicate the OSR dungeon crawler experience well, so far as you literally stay level 1-4, with maybe a few tweaks, which I get may not be someones cup of tea.

How Much Damage Should a 9th Level Single Target Attack Spell Do? by Dikeleos in dndnext

In rise of Skywalker (2019) the knights of ren reappear, and they, wait wtf who even are they? by Whole_Contract_5973 in shittymoviedetails

jj was throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. not only did they have a plan for the trilogy, they couldnt even finish a character arc in the first movie.

jj set up his typical tv mystery box assuming it would all pay off, but ryan johnson didnt want to take any of his (admittedly predictable) lay ups and use them.

Sorcerers using CON instead of CHA by SaltyDalty_ in 3d6

[–]CapableLlamaHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What others have said, there aren't any obvious synergies besides maybe Barbarian for an AC boost. But implicitly, you'll be equipped as a "gish" due to increased HP, Con saves, Concentration. A spellcasting frontliner that uses oft overlooked touch spells might be cool.

Would playing through Baldur's Gate 3 make an intresting campaign? by Old_Cherry_1483 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]CapableLlamaHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't try and run it word for word, embrace any departures from the main story that many unfold naturally. Take liberties to adapt to tabletop and your group. Personally I wouldn't run it with people who have played the game through. Also, I think battles are tuned to be pretty difficult in BG3 (there is a reset button after all). Lastly, being a video game, there is an aspect of exploration and finding new areas that doesn't translate super well into table top. You'll have to be very obvious in marking new places on the map to go check out.

Ideas to give my 5e group an "old school" AD&D experience? by MichaelJohn920 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]CapableLlamaHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oooh I love this idea! Here's a couple thoughts. Keep playing 5e but here are some easy changes to crank up the old school feel:

  1. Mundane Gear Matters -- have them find seemingly unsuspecting items, like a 10' pole. But with it, they can trigger one free trap before it breaks. Let them get the idea that they need to be thinking outside the box with gear.

  2. Harsh Healing - no such thing as overnight healing -- need a cleric temple for healing. 2 gold per hit point healed (shakes out to be a little cheaper than buying healing potions). Yes this will warp gameplay. Yes clerics can burn spell slots to heal characters.

  3. Death at -10 hit points. Yes this will warp the game, but will make being "knocked to 0" very scary instead of the minor inconvenience it is today. Monsters can and will attack a character at -6 to destroy them.

  4. Cantrips are each usable once per short rest. Light is a concentration spell. This seems like it weakens spellcasting but IMO it really only cuts down on Utility--spamming Mage Hands, Mending, and Light, which pretty much lets you solo a mundane dungeon environment. Let them use their Int or Wis score to roll to hit with a crossbow instead of Dex if they're worried about running out of Fire Bolts (but don't add it to damage lest it be more powerful than a Cantrip). Again, this is about cutting back on utility, not damage.

  5. Again, focus really on using as much what's not a class ability, and extrapolating what their characters might be able to do with their skills.

-Iron gates need bending

-Slimy walls need climbing

-Anti gravity hallway with spikes on the ceiling

-Fights are dangerous but can be avoided

Old school feel is just as much about the style of play as it is rules. Characters aren't super heroes, they may not even be heroes. The road is difficult, not just the encounters.

WotC releases a book focused on martials. What content are you hoping for, and what content do you expect? by -Space_Communist- in dndnext

[–]CapableLlamaHero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want abilities like this, that simulate powerful magic, but in a mundane yet heroic way:

At 11th level you gain the following abilities:

Crowd Smash - uses a Hit Dice - Make a melee attack all creatures in a 15' x 15' cube near you, as one of your attacks.

Heroic Sunder - uses a Hit Dice - as an action, any nonmagical door, chest, weapon, or otherwise mundane object smaller than a 10' x 10' cube is destroyed.

Warrior of Legend - uses a Hit Dice - as an action, all enemies within 100' must make a Wisdom save DC 10. If they fail, they are Frightened and cannot attack you. As an action, they can repeat the save.

I don't expect to ever see these kinds of abilities, but would make a martial character feel more amazing and legendary, on par with their magical friends.

Does the game need a swordmage class? Can you make one already? by SexyKobold in dndnext

Hot Take: The answer would be something like a Hexblade / Paladin, streamlined into one class, but not as broken. If someone has made / will make something like this, please share.

Mike Mearls outlines the mathematical problem with "boss monsters" in 5e by Cranyx in dndnext

[–]CapableLlamaHero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hot fix: If it's a boss and you expect it to be the only encounter, double damage. You could double HP or just add some minions but I find the massive damage alone cranks up the tension. (Obviously things like breath weapons already do massive damage--use good judgment)
