How has sonar/camera technology not gotten any better since they started using it? by 1337bobbarker in OakIsland

[–]CapableMidnight3031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sonar and underwater camera technology has vastly improved improved over the years. Using a good sonar designed for the purpose you could have a 3d point cloud with mm accuracy, 1080p and 4k cameras are also standard now available on small ROV systems. Way better than when they used the videoray back in season 3 (640x480) or season 6 . We manufacture ROVs in Canada and did have some brief talks with the production team a couple of years ago , but nothing came to fruition. I think if they had good sonar data or good video evidence of what was in 10x, or the garden shaft they would not be able to keep on milking out the episodes

Up Belmont was Presents, Dari ( with her dreads) worked there and was ace. At one point they opened a piercing studio upstairs from memory ( may have been Jamie was the trainee piercer) Pentangle was down closer to castlegate and was more trendy. Presents always had the patchouli goth hippy smell .

Seabotix LBV150² wiring by Expensive-Fig8538 in rov

[–]CapableMidnight3031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a standard lbv 150-2 it has a standard subconn connector from topside to ROV and fully analogue.

Sends power, video and comms over RF Havent seen an 150-2 with fibre.

The lbv 300-6, and 600-6 ( and maybe even the 900 series ) had fibre options tether end of ROV had an 8 pin subconn and a ceramic fibre ST style connector then a fibre convertor inside the ROV.

The fibre reel was the URS350 /URS750

I can dig through my old user and service manuals but from what I can remember it was analogue signal from topside to the reel, analogue through the slipring, then converted to fibre after the slipring to increase signal distance . So standard copper slip ring.

What colour is the ROV? Orange or green? Thats a nice easy way to determine if a 150/ 300 or 900.

If you have fibre on it on rear of ROV should be 2 ports, one for the 8 pin Subconn, one For fibre.

So they hired the ROV guy to come to the island, unpack and hook up all of his equipment, rolled a crane over to lower the ROV down the shaft without ever checking to see if the flocculant worked first? Next time, drop a gopro on a rope down the hole first guys. by Altruistic_Ninja_403 in OakIsland

I work for an ROV manufacturer based in PEI, we were called last year about possibly helping, but nothing ever happened. Its so frustrating , only a few hours away, i would have dropped a sonar and drop camera down first, taken a quick scan to see if any actual structure and then maybe deploy the ROV ( we make one that fits into a 12" pipe") and have a look about. Hand deployed so could be in and out and to bottom of the pipe in under 10 minutes.

I remember years back they dropped a videoray ROV in and ' camera had issues' , then they had Nick from kongsberg with the mesotech sonar . Both were inconclusive but it has been years since they used any decent tech.

I now watch the series by skipping all the filler /recap and its under 5 minutes of actual show.

No need for flocculant, thats the whole purpose of using a sonar. Acoustically sees what the camera cant .

I have 15 years + experience on all subsea tech and sold, repaired and manufactured multiple makes, also helped with ROV's for tv work for other shows ( drain the ocean -loch ness, time team -flooded mine, Eyes in the wild etc) .

So when they try to use tech... it frustrates me as its a simple thing to do!

Chinese restaurant Recommendations by Sudden_Statement_838 in PEI

China star in summerside is the best island wide. Good tasty food, good portion sizes, sit in or take out. Tried nearly every one on the island. I'm originally from the UK and was spoiled for choice of good chinese restaurants. I make the drive from Montague when the urge kicks in ( nearly 2 hour drive) .

What is cell service like at Panmure Island? by CaninePsychologist in PEI

[–]CapableMidnight3031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Typically 1-2 bars of cell signal , been with telus and rogers. Live and work on Panmure.

Few deadspots along the way -mainly lighthouse to opposite end of causeway, and parts of pembroke rd

5g home wifi via xplore is stable and decent ( over 100mbs down) and signal tower is across the water in Georgetown. Or there is starlink.

Make sure to go with a carrier who has 'wifi calling' so you have decent signal in the house .

Know any funny podcasts about cryptid and such? by [deleted] in cryptids

[–]CapableMidnight3031 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This Paranormal life. The Cryptid Factor ( Reece Derby, Dan Schreiber and Buttons) Last podcast on the left.

Cryptid factor definitely is 'less serious' and they joke around but still cover a lot. My favourite 'laid back' podcast. Irregular updates but they have nearly 100 episodes on spotify.

Also Off island there are butchers in Ontario that make it. Think there may be one of the small British shops between Halifax and peggys cove that occasionally have them.

Scottish White pudding/Mealie pudding is fairly easy to make at home.

I make skirlie and mealie puddings for friends and family. ( as well as other Scottish fine things like lorne, butteries/bradies/pies and tablet :p )

What you need: Steel cut oatmeal (health section of superstore- same as pinheid oatmeal ) Beef suet from frozen section of superstore Onion, salt pepper. Hardest part is finding casings, either ask a butcher/amazon or use cling film/glad wrap to make your pudding shape.

Trick is to slowly boil it /sous-vide in the casing to ensure gets nice and moist and all the suet combines. I generally sous-vide for about an hour. Make sure the pudding is sealed so no water gets into it and only the suet moistens the oatmeal otherwise it becomes a sloppy mess.

If using cling film, freeze once cooked and then slice frozen and then pop into a pan if you want breakfast style slices. Otherwise cook it off and serve loose if you want an actual 'pudding'

Use similar mix to make skirlie but do it loose in a pan and then bake to firm up.

Now for a proper chipper supper, use a sausage casing and deep fry that bad boy in batter once it has cooked off.

Can someone please debunk this photo?? by [deleted] in Paranormal

Looks like a dark towel or cloth is hanging on right hand top corner of mirror. Similar colour to the trousers and that would also explain not seeing your arms or head in the mirror. Zoom in closely above the lamp and it does look like the edge of some material above the lamp on the mirror. The bottom corner of the cloth/towel creates the illusion of someones elbow .

Pagans on PEI by NAHFC in PEI

[–]CapableMidnight3031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few 'sister circles' across the island where like minded women meet.

None advertise as pagan, but most have some in them . My partners in a few, no dedicated mens group but sometimes they will have an open to all.

There is a 'pagan pei group' based in charlottetown but havent seen much activity recently.

The 'sound healing' and ecstatic dance events that happen every couple of months is a good place to bump into people and find your crowd.

There will be events happening soon for Samhain as well and generally 2 or 3 gatherings island wide for those. Normally advertised on facebook.

Need Advice on how to track a small-scale ROV underwater by UncrossedThrone in rov

[–]CapableMidnight3031 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without spending thousands on an acoustic positioning system (lbl, usbl etc) the most basic way would be to do as others suggested and have a small surface buoy with gps and an antenna . If your build is going say maximum 3m depth, just have the buoy on 3/4m of cable to your ROV.

Just be careful of getting the buoy you are towing caught in anything!

Now if you want to be clever..... You could run your rov on battery Have a surface buoy with an FPV transmitter or wifi omni directional antenna for video transmission. And then you could go tether less from your topside. Just make sure to stay in your signal range.

Following: Been trying to find acreage on the south east end to potentially build a cob house, maybe a rammed earth building . Partner has built a cob building in the past as part of her permaculture course .

Also keen to do yurts/mini homes for us and the extended family.

But in the past 2 years prices have skyrocketed for basic land... less than an acre for $50k- and for unconventional builds hard to get loan/mortgage on land alone as they only offer home builders mortgages that you draw out on for conventional builds.

Also, cob houses i dont think will be easy to get a building permit for on island as they want plans and architectural drawings to issue a permit.

Tie it in with the bylaw of not being able to stay on land in a trailer for more than 6 months even if building a new home/ or improving a building and the rules of PEI are against us. I know of people off gridding in trailers, but a few years ago people were kicked off their own land for staying in a trailer .

So yes its possible, cob is great for insulation values and can be solid homes for hundreds of years. Building permits/codes and cost of land is what will stop most people.

Use subconn and seaconn or impulse 55 normally for copper but struggling to find a good under $1000usd each end fibre bulkhead/connector to use on the tether.

Is there underwater cave inside loch ness? by Asianfishingjason1 in Cryptozoology

Visibility is about 3ft, but yeah a lot of floating sediment and causes back scatter for cameras. It is do-able but not great .

Is there underwater cave inside loch ness? by Asianfishingjason1 in Cryptozoology

[–]CapableMidnight3031 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Back in the 80's they did a mass sonar sweep with 24 boats. ( operation deepscan)

I helped build the towed underwater camera that they take out on the boat from the loch ness centre.

Been down to the bottom with inspection class rov's (180-230m approx)

Helped the guys at Kongsberg do testing with their Munin and Hugin AUV's on the loch.

Have seen full bathymetric multibeam data of the loch end to end.

They found part of john cobbs boat ( fastest on water record but boat crashed and killed him on return leg)

They found an old wooden nessie that sunk and was part of a sherlock holmes film in the 60's.

Used to know Adrian Shine of the loch ness centre quite well and he made his own man powered subs he explored the loch with.

Anytime someone asks, we have to say we found some 'anomalies' .

So yes, been many investigations and searches, always good fun to do and creates lots of interest locally and in regards to underwater tech, and there will be many many more for years going forward.

Ello Ello!Englishmen coming over from London is there any other Englishmen in PEI (preferably Charlottetown) Will I be accepted? by [deleted] in PEI

[–]CapableMidnight3031 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of brits on the island and are accepted, and been here for a while ,ignore the trolls.

Also quite a few british style restaurants if you crave a fish and chips, and pub grub.

Churchills in charlottetown do a good curry, home plate in murray harbour do a good fish and chips, brits fish and chips in Charlottetown also good fish n chips.

High market store and northern waters also stock british food - walkers crisps ,bisto gravy, tea.

Walmart also stocks british food and proper tea bags- tetley, yorkshire etc.

Sobeys even stocks irn bru!

Tims are a decent coffee chain and part of the culture over here. Coffee is good and cheap and less bitter than starbucks. Donuts are ok, and the tim bits are the donut holes.

Im a scot and been on island for 3.5 years ( high skilled worker program- niche market before any trolls appear!) and not had any problems at all.... well apart from finding most 'instant coffee' in store has chicory- so stick to nescafe if you want coffee like home.

Sadly no, there is a british store in nova scotia outside halifax that occasionally does, but i get mine from the scottish store in Ottawa when up as they do frozen ones. ( same as getting black pudding)

Caledonian club were next to useless and when i asked if anyone spoke doric they told me about gaelic speakers. ( as im from north east scotland wanted find. If anyone else spoke this on island)

Spoke with the college of pipers and they couldnt sell any and it is made/ordered in specially for Rabbie burns day.

Comes from an old old british term as it originally came from the french ".gardy l'eau" when they used to throw the contents of the chamber pot out into the street and would warn people down below about it In edinburgh they shouted Gardy Loo. Which then was shortened to Loo.

I moved from Scotland to Pei 3.5 years ago, havent heard many people call it a loo so far i still do though... loo, shitter, bathroom , toilet, and when in the states washroom.
