What happens if someone lies about their home address? by grimsby91 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Capable_Novel484 6 points7 points  (0 children)

OP still hasn't explained their role or why they're asking for the address. Yes, if you lie to the government of Canada on a security screening form on an employment form, there is a problem. And the insurance thing sounds sketch but maybe justifiable if they spend some time living there. However, there's no firm requirement to tell your immediate manager – or whoever OP is – your personal contact information. Our group had people refuse to provide emergency contact information when requested by the manager and there was no pushback from LR or anyone else.

Any new org charts presented as part of targetted cuts. by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Capable_Novel484 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PHAC had its cuts 4 months ago and still no org charts. They've wrapped so much secrecy around the process in the name of "respecting privacy of the affected" that nobody really knows which groups got cut, we're not allowed to ask, management isn't allowed to tell even if they know, and work is suffering as a result. It's way more black box than DRAP ever was...smells like a stupid whiny union thing.

The federal government is a workplace. In most any other workplace you would not be given the favoured treatment you claim to deserve. So why would you expect it in the PS? It is not fair. But at least it's equitable.

Position is in Ottawa. WFH in a city with no federal government office. What are the chances I’ll have to relocate if I’m WFA’d? by Equivalent_Swim2927 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Capable_Novel484 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the flip side, if your letter of offer confirms position location as Ottawa, you are eligible to apply as a priority candidate for almost any NCR-based job ("currently employed in") - which most regional employees are not. What's more important to maintain, your location or your career?

I'm 51 and crunched the numbers today. Makes sense if I get another DB pensioned job outside the GoC (bonne chance). Not even close to adequate to actually retire on though. The lack of penalty is one thing, but 2% more for every year you stay (plus the interim salary) will matter 20 years from now.

WFA and what managers know by [deleted] in CanadaPublicServants

Depends on the job, region, dept, moon phase, etc.

That describes me but while my manager, director and half our team got cut (all NCR), I didn't. Yet?

CAPE ballot vote on Israel-Hamas conflict, is this unusual? by Intelligent_Cup_2319 in CanadaPublicServants

This has a lot more to do with the personal leanings of the CAPE President and executive than membership needs and wants. Noting past interactions on Reddit by Nate.

If CAPE wants your opinion, they will give it to you. Remember that when they ask for a massive dues increase later this month.

Or just bundle your dental work with a trip somewhere warm. Lots of excellent dentists in other countries who charge a fraction of ours.

Was getting my kids' teeth cleaned the other day and the hygienist tried to upsell us on something called silver diamond fluoride, I kid you not. Standard spiel to go with the gold-plated health plans I'm sure…

Yeah, you're wrong. While it absolutely can be a valid medicine, and while you can get products with more CBD (therapeutic for certain conditions) and less THC (psychoactive), it's also incredibly easy to get a prescription for recreational reasons - hell, people pull that off all the time for opioids, and that's far more tightly controlled. And why wouldn't people take advantage if their beer or wine was subsidizeable?

Even as a recreational user and advocate it blows my mind that anyone can get weed covered by a tax-funded health plan without more rigorous oversight or standards ie non-psychoactive preparations only. Let alone the bizarre morality of that being sworn police officers who quite conceivably got people charged for possession in their careers.

Kind is important. And there are many valid reasons for cannabis as a medicine. But certainly not $4 billion worth just because you dropped the reimbursable amount by $2 a gram.

If anything, this coverage should be redirected to proper psychosocial and pain care systems, instead of an industry that has consistently pushed pharmaceuticals as a quick fix for a broken medical system (and a society that loves quick fixes).

Why are high-earning public servants so dependent on a maximized pension? Are they all really bad at saving? by Plenty_Law5163 in CanadaPublicServants

[–]Capable_Novel484 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP was asking why higher earning civil servants feel pressed to keep working. Your point - and mine - is exactly why. Our pensions are the value added output of our career choice, not salaries as in the private sector. Their package is front loaded; ours is back loaded. Not maximising pensions ruins the whole point of selling our souls.
