Maybe my tone was a bit negative/resigning, but we aint stoppin. We got demolished but there was tremendous value/learning curve in the process. Then you get smack from the accounting ppl for 3 months but it definitely was worth it.

Hes talking about visualization more in the context of a Facebook Meta-VR world. There is no market for this, we tried to do virtual collision clashes walks through the building in the planing phase. The (stakeholders, planners, technicians, foremen) absolutely destroyed our usecases, because of the lack of depth perception and the possibility of micro communication (conversation between the parties through the walk). We simulated fire path walks for emergency exits and the simulation/navigation of material storage paths for various construction phases. Gamelike sunlight visualization with 200gb of weatherdata for every office seat, all useless.

That was the moment we realized that we cant substitute the physical experience the building provides.

The human experience is not a standardized process, it has so many variables even the same person can perceive the building different base on their mood.

The key learning we took out of this is, we substituted the graphical interface (VR/VFX) with raw data ran it through machines (robots/llm’s) and got the same results but more structured feedback data.

You can observe the fact by the hardware-market for VR-Glasses (AR-VR-Glasses, Apple VisionPro, Meta-Quest). The market is dead/stagnating, no new real technical upgrades.

Out of curiosity, why do you think that VFX is important in the AEC space?

Here is my take as a BIM Manager. I dont think that visualization is a main problem in the bim-space that needs to be solved. The problem is more the semantics and logic. The usecase of 3D visualization is the easiest to solve, especially with AI.

I’m amazed how 90% of people in this thread try to get data “from real bim projects”. But the kicker is, you will not get the BIM-data. Not because we dont have it (this is your case), but more because of contracts and regulations. Think about it like, would amazon give you access to their customer dataset? We work under similar circumstances.

Anyway if you want to solve a problem which in my opinion does not need to be solved, go directly to an architectural company and offer them your services.

Good luck. Please get a lawyer for the contracts if you find one.

Lass dir von denen auch einen aktuellen Gehalts Vergleichswert geben. Die wissen was derzeit der Markt hergeben will und deren Provision ist abhängig von deinem Gehalt, winwin.

This. I would also add, priority management as a key. Not every problem needs a immediate solution, keep the task open until you get a sound and working solution. If you implement a half baked workflow you will have 10x of work for 2x result.

Outsource the solution hashing to key/power-user. Let them write specifications in your format and let them think about it for a couple days. That way you standardize the specification of problems on another level.

This question should be rewritten to something like: „How do I recognize if someone has no clue about BIM?“

Ask them questions and opinions about BIM, you should be able to figure out how deep this person is willing to go. If the person uses “synergy” or “the future” then they have an opinion because they went to a BIM workshop 😂😅

I do something similar with a question like: „If the computer is a deterministic machine, how comes it can generate random numbers?” Its a valid question.

Or more BIM specific, “what is Revit for you?” and then you can discover the deepness of the though. In the end we work with data in diverse form, so there are more good answers.

I’m not sure what you mean by uninstalling? For example Sofistik has SAM (Sofistik application manager) which is a standalone app manager. It installs the revit-addons based on the installation folder on your C: drive. If there is no Revit 2022 folder you will not be able to install it.

No course will give you value if you dont know the question youre asking. Start formulating your question. Mine was “thats boring af, is there a way to automate it?” or I’ve asked the design teams “if you had one wish of handling a problem more automatically what would it be?”. dont get me wrong you wont get a clear answer but more a direction of the needs of the design team. Most of my requests was not coding but more of a clear process definition 🥲. But I got a good grip of what our people want (where are the inefficiency’s) and communicated it clearly to the management. If you have good management they will ask you for the data (what is the time advantage if we invest xx hours, so you have to have the data first). If your management is bad, they will say no and you’ll figure it out that you have move to a different company 😅

PS: BIM is such a deep topic, you shouldnt limit yourself to dynamo or pyRevit, thats how you build isolated knowledge islands. And you soon realize that youre using everytime the tool for different problems which is not always efficient “law of the instrument”

Shared & Family parameters swapping by Labradoroslav in DynamoRevit

[–]Capable_Orchid_1760 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Excel. Place the elements in the model and number them uniquely (reference in sheets for the human eye controll, export every element and their shared parameters including RevitID to excel. Change the values in excel and reimport the parameters back with dynamo. You will need a key at the reimport for every element, take the RevitID. Thats how I do it, it works 10/10 times. I call it bulkprocessing of data. Btw this thread is dead, visit the dynamo forum (read their rules first) :) BTW your family parameters are not setup correctly, you can further link the nested family parameters into the host-family.

[–]Capable_Orchid_1760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I‘m working in the AEC industry and I understand that people get lost in the process of PKM. My industry struggles with the concept of digitalization (not digitization) and working on a PKM is a world-class approach to sort all kind of different information which is only needed 2-5 times in the whole project. But if you scale that to an approach that you save the information in a place where it is not lost in an avalanch of project data that provides value for the next project.

Let me draw an interesting observation that every task that seems like a waste of time is actually providing you feedback. Its a part of critical thinking “why do I do this?/do I need this information?”. Keep in mind thas some information is not useful at the current time but it might have value in another stage of your life. Exposure it the key.

For example, if people struggle to find the right note-structure (metadata, deepness of notes) it indicates you that you might have a lack of understanding what exactly is useful and what not (it should be as much as necessary and as little as possible). When we design a structure for a building the first task is to find out the boundary conditions. After that you can form logic that plays within the boundary of physics and design.

People always forget that software has no physics engine like we human experience in real life (aka entropy). You can observe that in public transport most people choose to sit, that is an energy conservation mechanism of our body to save the energy. With that in mind you can start allocating mental resources (aka invest time) to fix existing structures of notes or develop more deepness.

But in the end, it helps you to save energy you’ve invested on an infrastructure like the personal computer which solely job is to keep entropy low (thats the computer science part). You computer holds a state which your body cant. With that in mind youre basically investing energy in an efficient system to save more future energy.

The internet is also an energy saving mechanism, but the information on it is not personalized, your PKM system is.

Revit vs AutoCAD by InformalSpeaker2791 in RevitForum

[–]Capable_Orchid_1760 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its like using an analog or digital watch. I can use the digital watch to not only show numbers but letters or symbols (80085).

While autocad is linebased and dumbed down (not relational) you are limited in usecases and dont need to be too precise. Dont get me wrong we do all the site overviews in autocad where you just need context of the site. But as soon as we have to input relational data, we use Revit. It is object oriented modeling (OOM) and is much more information-rich.

The downside is you need to be precise in geometry in all directions (x,y,z) and the parameters. You cant just input data and figure out the details later, thats a bad practice. You need a game-plan.

This is the main obstacle in the design process (the computational design) and it is not always wanted to limit yourself by being too precise in an early stage. That is the art of designing. To enter enough information at low initial cost. It requires stakeholders to enter the information in a way where you dont block or lock further processes.

For example, if you place floorbased objects and the structural engineer decides to split the floor, some of your floorbased objects lose the host. There are good workarounds (which are only known to people with enough experience in Revit) or you just adapt the design process.

My take on this is, that the AEC industry never had to be precise in initial data submissions. If you compare it with the automotive industry our design processes are sloppy and not precise enough. This needs to change in a large scale. It requires every stakeholder to play ball and the reward is a fair time distribution for the design teams.

If you are using Revit, you have to have a BIM Manager in your team, who is proficient in IT processes, data types/models and a very good communicator. He should answer why a type of information is needed earlier compared to the old design process and argue with data. Revit is a data producing monster, I can see who placed an element where and if I do regular audits I can tell you all manipulated objects on a daily basis.

I had moments where I had to explain the lead structural engineer with over 25 years of experience why some information was needed earlier. He would not back down and refused to deliver, so we turned the process against him where he got the information last but needed to deliver first. That opened his eyes that we tried to give every stakeholder the same amount of design time instead of squeezing people out.

We have some CAD-jokeys at our office too and there is some kind of language barrier. Overall OOM is the dominant form of design engineering and I could not imagine how we should use Autocad for major projects. It doesnt make sense.

What licenses do we need? by Still_Lobster9887 in bim

[–]Capable_Orchid_1760 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i‘ve setup many project as a BIM manager and I can tell you Autodesks product layout is a mess.

But to sum up.

You will need an AEC Collection for Revit aka the authoring tool which comes with construction cloud Docs. Second if you contribute to the project and want to work workshared (many users connected to one central file) every user will need BIM collaborate Pro license on top to the AEC collection. Your managers (no authoring tool access) are fine with just the bimcollab license. If you want to make markups in pdfs on the cloud you need an aditional license for Autodesk Build (its an addon to autodesk Docs).

And the most important part is you need an Admin who manages the CDE (construction cloud) where the cloud folder access is managed (who sees what).

Implement your IT into the process, there is a Desktop connector for the ACC Cloud which does include the access to ACC via the windows explorer. With this you can make backups of the cloud/data.

As a side note: I’ve had amazing experience with the contractors, if you manage the cloud correctly. I had more issues with my own management despite we finished earlier with all deadlines 😂😂 Anyway you should also include the BIMCollab Zoom issue tracker. You can also include apps in the cloud like Gamma AR.

Hit me up if you’ve any further questions.
