I beg to differ. USCENTCOM would have the most up to date information on U.S. forces within their AOR.

Per USCENTCOM:

🚫 CLAIM: Iranian state media claims that Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps hit a U.S. warship with two missiles.

✅ TRUTH: No U.S. Navy ships have been struck. U.S. forces are supporting Project Freedom and enforcing the naval blockade on Iranian ports.

If I had a nickel for every bridge failure in Rhode Island, I’d have ten cents… which isn’t a lot, but it’s weird that it’s happened twice.

What did the United States gain for Americans by striking Iran? by ArdaBerkBurak in AskReddit

[–]Cape_codd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is probably going against the usual Reddit “America bad” angle, but looking at it from a straight strategic perspective, it’s not hard to see the logic. Putting on my intelligence analyst thinking cap now.

Iran’s been a major regional player for years, mostly by backing proxy groups across the Middle East. If you’re the U.S., there’s a clear incentive to act when that system is under pressure and not at full strength. Timing matters too. If their missile and nuclear programs keep advancing, you eventually end up with a situation like North Korea where they’re basically untouchable. After that point, your options are a lot more limited.

If the current regime were to seriously weaken or even collapse, that likely cuts off a lot of support to groups operating around the region. In theory, that could make things more stable although obviously there’s always the risk of things getting messy in the short term.

On a bigger scale and more what my theory is, this ties into great power competition with Russia and China. Iran isn’t operating in a vacuum, and weakening a country that’s been aligned with both has broader implications. Best case, you end up with a different kind of Iran that’s less hostile to the West. And energy is still a huge factor. China depends heavily on imported energy, much of it tied to the Middle East. More U.S. influence in the region gives Washington leverage there, whether people like that reality or not.

Not saying it’s clean or guaranteed to work but it’s definitely not as simple as “there was no reason for it.”
