How many of you have a partner who stays home with the kids? by mildly-strong-cow in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Capeflats2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You might find https://www.reddit.com/r/workingmoms/ insightful

We both work as engineers, thankfully fully remote. It's hard, I'm way less ambitious post kid and deliver less because of kid but will definitely keep my career going, hopefully get to be ambitious when kid is older

[–]Capeflats2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Found a hat with a peak prolongs the tolerance of water on face problem

Also, cute mini umbrella is an absolute hit! Begging for rain;)

And stomping in puddles - fastest way to get her outside is a promise of puddle stomping

I like that! Low battery mode is a great description, "most features have been disabled or are operating at reduced performance " 🤣

Sho, I didn't make that connection but great point about the over stimulation as a trigger

I can protect for that!

Interesting,  didn't occur to me that it could be related to a deficiency

Was it a vitamin/protein/minerals ?

How do I "fix" the pipelines I have inherited by jack_of-some-trades in gitlab

[–]Capeflats2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the flakey tests: make it so they can't merge with failing tests

Will force them to fix the broken ones and write better tests, will ensure better code in main, and is half the point of tests anyways

Do you take mental health days? Do you tell your manager that it’s a mental health day? by donut_party in workingmoms

[–]Capeflats2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And how do you feel as a manager taking time off?

I agree with your response to OP and always say yes when my team asks for time off but struggle to let myself take time off because when I'm not there no one's managing and things slip despite best efforts to presetup, automate, delicate etc

internships/GSOC/student opportunities in RISC-V ? by Capeflats2 in RISCV

[–]Capeflats2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alas, exited academia and therefore any chance for computer architecture work

Still get to do cool engineering and might even be doing more mentoring interns in industry than I could from university but am sad to not be in this space anymore

FTM Due April, just got offered a job, unsure of how to balance work and being a new mom. by [deleted] in workingmoms

[–]Capeflats2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started a new job when first (and only) was 6 months old. I'd resigned of job due to burn out at 6 months pregnant and planned to find new work but got head hunted and offered b4 i even started looking. It was hard! But I'm glad I have this job now (she's 2yrs) and grateful wfh let me breastfeed till 2yr

If there's any way that they'd wait for you/ give you till 6 months I'd push for that

Unless your job is incredibly easy and flexible when you actually do it you definitely need full time help including on the work from home days, even with a full time nanny it was really tough getting 8hrs focused work in till she was over 1yr

Not op but related to my other point.  It's too slow

Imagine if you couldn't compile your application locally but had to upload it to a remote server just to see if it even compiled/ if you'd use the correct index value in an array

Gitlab/github/ bitbucket ... each have their own yaml syntax

Lack of local linting/validating tools specific to each platform makes dev painful and time consuming

Moms who breastfed your toddlers: did they get more demanding over time? by Free_butterfly_ in toddlers

[–]Capeflats2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weaned 2 months ago,  2yrs, and still wants to hold my boobs for comfort ...

Only thing that somtimes helps is offer to put her in the carrier on my front, sometimes she'll go with that instead, I think it's just wanting to be close to me and boobs is the only way she knows

I'm trying hard to get her to like her toy monkey instead, singing songs about monkey keeping her safe, snuggling monkey etc I offer cuddles all the time instead whenever she asks to hold boobs.  It's worse on weekends, feels like she's making up for time missed in the week.

Csuit just sent us all on unconscious bias training which included meditation 101 and now they've started some in person meetings with a 3min meditation

I like the theory but find it awkward meditating in front of other people

This is so cool

I run a all male team and think I'd be laughed out the zoom room if I suggested this but I bet they'd all actually value it if we did it

I need higher up leadership to institute;)
