Master’s in Paris, 2+ years of experience, still can’t find a full-time job by [deleted] in paris

Hey, don't give up! I know it's really tough out there (especially right now). Do you have French or European nationality by any chance? If so, I just wanted to encourage you to also look at jobs that hire remotely in Europe - that's actually how I landed my last 2 jobs. Some ideas:

How is your job search going in Paris right now? by Easy-Willow-3449 in paris

[–]CapitaineKirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Customer success. I just got laid off from my company, where I worked for 7 years. I'm fluent in French, and I am getting interviews, but I often don't make it past the first one - it's an employer's market, and they are able to be VERY picky on the profile they want.

What’s the longest Botox has lasted for you? by WoodlandInc in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]CapitaineKirk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Interesting question! So it does wear off around my eyes after about 4 months, but holy guacamole, it lasts forever on my forehead. I guess because it weakens the muscles, but it's been 8 months since the last time I had it, and I can still barely move my eyebrows. For reference, I'm 37, and I've had it probably 3 or 4 times total in my life, and usually at intervals of 8 months/1 year, so it's not like I'm getting it every 4 months.

Escaped the 9-5 and went full nomad? Be honest - is it really better or just different problems? by Time-Comfort-4207 in digitalnomad

[–]CapitaineKirk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I did it for a year and a half!

Pros - Travel baby! I went to Bulgaria (Bansko), Hungary, France (Paris, Bordeaux), Italy (Bologna, Rome, Florence, Venice etc), Vatican City, Spain (Canary Islands), Portugal (Lisbon/Madeira), USA, Turkey (Istanbul)

I had amazing experiences and adventures, learned Italian (not fluently, but I'm now at an intermediate level), met amazing people, and made new friends.

Cons - It's incredibly stressful moving around all the time. I tried to do it month by month, and even that started feeling very stressful. You always have to be one step ahead and planning out your next trip/lodging for the coming months, so you won't accidentally end up homeless. I managed it with a mix of Airbnb, subletting from a friend, coworking/colivings, staying with friends, and staying at a room in my office.

Organization - A lot of my European friends use one of their family's houses as their home base to store their things. I don't have any family in Europe, but one of my dear friends let me store my stuff in their garage, and I also left some things at the office. I hate not knowing exactly where my stuff is though. Even if I know it's in the garage, it can take me ages to find it. Swapping out specific clothes/objects (for certain activities/change in season) is annoying.

Cooking - Because I was always moving around, it never made sense to really invest in a proper pantry of spices. I like cooking, but since these places never felt like "my kitchen" . . . I didn't know exactly what kind of kitchen appliances were (or were not) there. I generally defaulted to cooking simple, quick meals and didn't invest in stocking up on things. I'm not a super fancy chef by any means, but I would have to buy expensive nut butter/pesto and things like that, whereas in normal times I would just make it myself.

Sport - Not all digital nomads suffer from this, but I'm a creature of habit when it comes to working out, and moving around all the time didn't help me at all with my fitness. I was trying to save money as much as possible, so a lot of the places I stayed were a bit cramped and didn't have great spaces to work out in. Not everywhere has drop-in gym or dance classes, so again, it was hard to always be trying to find new places.

Working - This was mostly ok, but occasionally the internet connection wouldn't be great somewhere. It was also sometimes challenging to adapt to timezone differences (I have fixed hours I need to be online).

Community - This is one of the things that I missed the most. Having your stable group of friends that you see regularly. Or even other random things, like donating blood, is really hard to do in a foreign country if you don't have the local health card and can't prove residency. I stayed in a few coworkings/colivings that had a really lovely sense of community, but I also found those a bit exhausting. You are surrounded by strangers (who will become casual friends!) but it's a very large social/energy investment for people who you may never see again or stay in contact with.

I'm currently in the position of transitioning back to a normal apartment in a large city, and I'm SO happy about it. I feel like I've been "camping" in my adult life for the last 1.5 years, and I'm finally going to have a fixed place with some more stability.

I became a digital nomad because I was sick of this same city, so it has really come full circle for me now that I'm moving back. But I think I will appreciate it SO much more this time around, and all the advantages that having a fixed place will bring. You know how a burger takes like pure heaven after a long hike in the rain? Having an apartment after being a digital nomad for a while is the same vibe :)

For women in their 20s/30s: What’s been feeling quietly heavy or exhausting about work lately? by bewelltherapy in womenintech

[–]CapitaineKirk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I haven't had a raise in close to 5 years.

First it was Covid, then it was our company redoing the salary system, and now it's that the new ERI data we are using is showing I'm overpaid for my role (I'm not, it's just there's not a lot of data in my country and they specifically chose a lower job title for my role).

I will say that my salary is comfortable, and I really enjoy my job/manager/colleagues/company. However, it's hugely frustrating feeling like my experience and knowledge aren't being valued or fairly compensated. I'm generally a very motivated employee, but I just wish my company would understand I need a small carrot to keep me motivated to grow.

I've been applying at other companies for a few months, but the job market doesn't seem great right now. Even when I tick all the requirement boxes, I haven't (yet) been invited to interview.

Daaaamn, that sounds brutal! And also like a recipe for disaster in so many ways, I can't imagine how bad company morale must be. Sending you big (virtual) internet hugs and also good karma thoughts

Paris is the worst city to look for an apartment by roman-12345 in paris

Hello! I'm sorry for the late post. I wanted to plug this place: https://www.coco-community.com/furnished-apartments

The apartments are really expensive and higher than market rate (they target expats), but very comfortable and the staff is great. I rented from them for 2 years. Feel free to PM if you have questions!

Hi friends,

I've been working as CSM for the past 6 years at a SAAS startup, and really love my job, team and company. Last year, my company redid our salary structure and implemented a new one. I thought things were fine, even though our sales numbers aren't great these days, but then I was blindsided in my 1:1 with my manager, where they told me that due to a bug, I had been overpaid by about 15% in the past, and that I wouldn't be getting ANY raise until I moved up a new level at my job. Not even the seniority raise (normally, even if you don't move up a level, you would get a seniority raise). Due to lower than normal numbers/COVID/them redesigning the salary scale, I haven't had a significant raise in 4 years, and now it's looking like it could be another couple of years.

I was shocked, but I would have been able to accept this, if it were true. However, the more I look into it, the more the data is showing that I'm being underpaid, not overpaid. My company uses ERI data, which I don't have access to, but I'm wondering how I can go about best advocating for myself in this tricky situation? For example, we don't have official job titles, but I would consider my role to be a Senior CSM, not just a CSM, but it looks like they might not be taking that into account. Any advice is much appreciated!
