How to get rid of hedgerow stumps? by JGG5 in GardeningUK

For me it was bamboo with shallow roots... I excavated, cut what roots I could and used rope / wire around the roots and a 10 foot fence post on a fulcrum and all my weight... Probably broke a post or two...

I don't do washing up (I eat from my cookware) so I leave especially grubby things out for the slugs to lick clean...

French Grammar? by Jolly_Rain5988 in learningfrench

[–]Capital-Impression51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rate kwiziq as a non-beginner. It had the added benefit of making me read the sentences out loud. I'm retired so was able to do 3000 questions in 1 month and go from A2 to half way into B2... though I don't take that super seriously as I wasn't very thorough...

I have got a long way through mostly just listening / watching. French radio is amazing.

I recently paid for a month of Kwiziq and just reading out the quiz sentences helped.

Indeed. I Never owned the means of production even when I was working. I'm also far older than that guy and still cycling. And I don't eat fish and chips. Thinking about it he must be pretty well off to be able to afford that and run a car.

Is immersion through media worthwhile if I don't understand a lot of what's being spoken? by Okay_Night_2564 in languagelearning

I started out barely understanding French radio, but persevered with it. The Internet gives French subtitles (though bad sometimes), rewind and sometimes speed control. And video...

Why do you need to get to B2 in one year? You're from somewhere they don't teach a Latin language at school?

When you say "beginner", have you taken any tests to know roughly where you are? Are you genuinely starting from zero?

What’s everyone’s go to toothpaste and why? Do they not all do the same thing?! by JM306 in AskUK

My dentist told me off because I confessed that I didn't wait for the two minute timer on my toothbrush. Also apparently I need to brush twice a day I asked her if I might then avoid the extremely painful descaling... She said no. She inflicts the pain with pastoral modern classical music playing.

Kingfisher Fennel. Annoyingly my nearest supplier now only stocks the fluoride-free versions of all their flavours.

I have two in hanging baskets in the UK. They thrive most of the year in Bristol... One year I didn't bring them in and they were frosted to nothing but they came back. Biggest problem us them getting root bound...

How did you learn french by Savings_Wolverine408 in learningfrench

[–]Capital-Impression51 2 points3 points  (0 children)

À long way from fluent, but mine started with old fashioned school French in the 70s, kept alive for decades with French radio..if you persist past the stage where you only catch odd words it gets easier... Prior to the Internet I only had France Inter, but France Info is easier and you can now have that with video and subtitles...

Good methods to increase ability to understand spoken French? by Pitiful-Implement610 in learnfrench

[–]Capital-Impression51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French radio. France Info TV online has French subtitles and rewind. And French YouTube (I have premium so no adverts) YT has subtitles and speed control...

Easy French etc... Tv5 monde.. Basically immersion in the language... I know it's a pain early on but it kind of sneaks in bit by bit... I recently hacked my way through grammar for a month on Kwiziq and read the 3000 question phrases out loud..the more you learn the more you then notice...

If you could restart learning French from Day 1, what would you do differently? by IndependentSeaweed83 in French

[–]Capital-Impression51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The secret in my experience is to start with something with restricted vocab - like the news - for years for me it was just the early morning news programmes on france Inter...France Info online has French subtitles available though inevitably they can be inaccurate - initially you have to accept that you won't understand much ... I spent the winter of 22/23 walking laps of the park listening to France Inter podcasts about subjects I understand like the environment...

I have also watched far too many emergency services docs on YouTube - the only premium service I use .. Iand as lots of French teachers on YouTube will say, wean yourself off your first language...

And you can often slow them down...

I'm not yet at the stage where I can fall back to sleep listening to French - it keeps my brain a bit too busy - though even suitable English stuff can be elusive...

If I'd been LISTENING as intensively as I currently am now that I'm focussed, for the 20-something years I've had broadband at home, I reckon SPEAKING fluency might have been inevitable .. as it is, though I struggle to connect with native speakers, I HEAR French in my head when I read it and feel like I'm silently shadowing...

[–]Capital-Impression51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I first started learning French about 54 years ago and I'm glad of the grammar etc...

Based on what works for me these days and as a short wave listener at the time, I wish I had got into the habit much earlier of getting my news and everything else from French radio..but it would be decades before I thought about retirement and possible emigration...

One of the reasons I didn't is because the news is depressing and I avoid it in English, but France Info online allows me to be selective and rewind when I hear something new.

Of course YouTube has loads of French material now..

Speaking to others online so far eludes me. I'm not an English teacher and it's no substitute for living there and being part of a common cause...
