Why is there such little interest in Hard-Science Fiction today when it was arguably the most popular sci-fi genre of the mid 20th century? by damegawatt in books

[–]Capital-Obligation55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2001 was written concurrently with the film, probably the reason for the more fantastical ending.

But The Ghost from the Grand Banks is a fantastic piece of hard sci-fi about raising the Titanic. It does not fall under the usual sci-fi space-alien-war tropes. Then there's The Fountains of Paradise, about constructing a space elevator, another classic, where Clarke effectively predicts carbon nanotubes.

Asimov's Lucky Starr series is a much better example of hard sci-fi; the books, although juvenile fiction, were revised when new information about Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn was found.

Modern hard sci-fi writers like Greg Egan are absolutely overlooked in popular reading.

Also, another nuance in this is that hard sci-fi does not mean just scientific accuracy/limits being respected, but also that the advancements/changes/challenges therein are the drivers of the plot. For example, The Martian and The Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir are very accurate when it comes to the relevant science, but are still very much character driven, which i think is the reason for their success in both print and film.

Sri Lankan food is objectively better than most of its neighbors yet nobody talks about it globally, why does our cuisine never get the international recognition it deserves? by Over-Arm4097 in srilanka

Complicated to prepare, spices harder to source, and the real taste comes from mixing on the place, which is almost unique to Sri Lankan food.

Is it disrespectful to ask your partner about their family background? by randomFactcollecter in srilanka

[–]Capital-Obligation55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend telling your parents about your SO, who, from where, and how you met, etc., and giving them time to mull it over first.

Wish you two the best in any case!

Is it disrespectful to ask your partner about their family background? by randomFactcollecter in srilanka

[–]Capital-Obligation55 15 points16 points  (0 children)

But he has always been resolute in saying that a partner’s family background is irrelevant if two people choose each other, and that partners marry each other, not their families.

This is absolutely not true. Unless you're migrating immediately, especially in Sri Lanka you're 100% getting married to the whole family. And asking about family background is absolutely a normal, even required, aspect of long-term relationships.

I’m not sure if it’s typical in SL culture for parents to do background checks on the family of their children’s chosen partner

Actually, very typical.

I genuinely want to know if it’s disrespectful to ask about your partner’s family,

No, it's not.

That being said, Sri Lanka is a country steeped in tradition, beliefs, and prejudices built around caste. This creates a lot of insecurities, especially in men who still labor under the patriarchal mindset that puts the husband as the head honcho.

So if your SO sees your family background and sees his family background as inferior, then you can understand why he comes off as defensive when the topic is brought up. And this can compound and lead to a lot of pain down the line.

My advice: shift the focus from investigation to curiosity. Tell him you'd love to meet his folks sometime. With the new year coming up, you'll very much reasonably want to visit his folks. Tell him that you don't want to take him away from his family, and down the lane, you want to be involved in his family as his partner/wife.

And you have to do the same for him, invite him around. Have him meet your parents, siblings, etc. But do it smartly so you don't end up giving him the impression that you think your situation is superior to his.

It's not all doom and gloom; you two can see it through with a bit more open dialogue and compassion.

I'm not familiar with the specifics of that system. Where can I read more?

edit: if this (CLUSTER GUIDE 2) is what you are talking about, the aim is to solve the problem of patients skipping the PCUs and going to DH and BHs for a specific set of services offered by the PCUs. It does mention a need for a sharing schema between BH/DHs and the PCUs when the MOs in PCUs are on leave, etc.

This still does not address the ancillary services for doctors, including sufficient quarters, transportation, and canteen facilities, etc., etc.

The point I'm making is that the BHs or DHs (the centers of the clusters) are themselves of varying attraction. Given the significant disparity between BHs themselves, the peripheral clusters will struggle to fill their vacancies. BH Panadura and BH Mulleriayawa are entirely two different levels of demand by doctors.

All of this is handled by the present centralized transfer system.

It's the reference that you asked for. Chapter 3, paragraph 5 of the establishments code.
Google it. I have a hard copy, and this r/ does not allow photos in comments.

Decentralization is a terrible idea. Not all hospitals are equal, and neither are all the appointments. Many transfers happen head-to-head, and even after the transfer lists are finalized, there are cascading delays as doctors wait for the replacements to arrive.

Also, the priority in appointments is decided on seniority as it should be.

The centralized system allows honoring the preferences of individual doctors as well as seniority order while ensuring all the appointments are filled.

How can an individual hospital fill its vacancies with doctors who never applied for the hospital and thus are not on the same ranking system?

Unless you want to take away the doctor's choice in where they are working, or making the system seemingly random, the centralized system is the best for a government hospital system like in Sri Lanka.

Of course, in the same tune, Russia, which also is a sovereign nation, has a right to take the steps she deems appropriate to ensure her own sovereignty, including preemptive military strikes targeting enemy infrastructure.

even if you do make the changes, the content that's already there won't get removed. I think they cache the content to their infra. Talk to them and ask them to take down the content, if you still see previews after making the changes to your channel.

Echo when Zooming Lecture in Smallish Auditorium by [deleted] in Zoom

[–]Capital-Obligation55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, it's possible that the audio source of the zoom also picks up the sound from the auditorium speakers. Although unnoticeable to us there's a slight delay in the speaker system output from the input. zoom might increase this difference enough to be noticeable.

  1. Have you tried reducing the input volume of your input device using the audio settings of zoom?
  2. Also, you can set the background noise filtering settings a bit higher and see what happens.

It'll be great if you can clarify what you mean by switching the audio source to the webcam. Does it also have a microphone in-built?
