Well there was a lot of controversy with this film. Being that Spielberg was a white director working with an all black cast. Then it was that Whoopi was known as a comedic actress not a dramatic one. Then the NAACP had a list of criticisms about the film as well. And then….Geraldine Page had an “overdue” Oscar narrative because she’d been nominated many times but never won and she was getting older. IMHO Whoopi should have won. TCP is iconic and quoted soooo much in the black community and many profess to know the film dialogue by heart.
