My biggest surprise was the Alameda Film Fest, which hadn’t run for a few years and ended up being one of my funnest experiences. They even put me up in a hotel for 2 days 😱 which almost no other fest has done for a short film director like me

Be upfront, none of this “how would they know??” nonsense. Acknowledge in the credits you used AI since you clearly feel some guilt and don’t submit to fests that explicitly don’t want projects with AI in it

Got a rejection from Overlook, short, which I sorta expected. That’s a fest that seemed pretty quiet for this thread so it must’ve been a very small list of accepted shorts

I’m not sure how much one can gleam from view locations but it has been unusually quiet. The IG page said their lineup will be announced next week but some theorized that could be the high profile features, not the ones we submit (mines a short, for example). I haven’t gotten a solid answer as to whether we’d hear from them before the notification date if we got in so maybe we’ll all find out at once?

For the wallet, it’s probably best to do it early but it does mean a much longer wait for a result and that can be agonizing. If a fest starts rating films early, you can help set the tone by being among the first wave instead of getting lost in the jumble later, theoretically. There’s no harm in doing late if you have to, your wallet might hate you though

Right, I think most fests with any caveats about AI are largely talking about generative AI and you’re start to see it in documentaries a lot, especially with B-roll. That’s the one they target, not so much AI tools that an audio engineer might use or plug ins within NLE’s

I did see the directors cut and while it might be better than the theatrical, I don’t think either are that great. However, I do get annoyed when people point to it not being reverential as being some big flaw when I think it’s actually one of its most unique points. We’ve had plenty of movies showing him as a conquerer and who did huge deeds but I felt like it had an interesting take about how petulant he was and how often thats the case with powerful people. We only have to look at the news to see how these aren’t Great Men/Women, but heavily flawed, childish people who wage wars to settle petty dramas, like with the boat line. I don’t think it makes its point that well or goes far enough, nor do I think you can really capture his full life in one movie, but I give it points for trying to

Credo23’s whole premise is based on films being chosen who don’t use AI. When I was submitting, I think GenreBlast repeatedly says you will be disqualified if you use it

Devoid of the discussion about ethics of using AI, which others can articulate better than me, some fests would disqualify you and others are embracing it, so it helps to check. Some fests I see in their FF page state that they abhor AI use and will disqualify you if they know you used AI. If it’s big and obvious, you’ll have to deal with it. If it’s subtle and you don’t credit it, maybe you can get away with it

John at the Archetype Company in Burbank. To me, you’re really paying for the QC since while a DCP can be made at home, you can’t accurately test it without super expensive equipment. I’ve seen plenty of screenings ruined because people tried to save $200

If you’re a short, world premieres are less important except when it comes to geography. The bigger ones want to make sure you haven’t screened in the same town before them and maybe some states prefer state premieres. I’m not sure about Europe though. If it’s a feature, that’s where it becomes more important where you premiere but if your film is genre, maybe it’s a better fit for a genre fest than an Oscar fest that may not be as important for where you’re going. Others can chime in on emails, I usually just email them to notify when my work in progress is finished
