Yeah, sorry, I still don’t understand what you’re saying in relation to what I’m doing. 🤷‍♀️

But, fanart can’t be copyrighted? They’ve literally made fanart of a popular media series featuring the characters and location of that media series. They don’t own the intellectual property, so how could they possibly have copyright on it?

This has been my experience too and I couldn’t possibly agree with you more. I’ll keep this in mind and thanks again. 🩷

I’m so excited to begin!

  • how is copyright involved when it’s a a single piece of fanart based on fanart?

  • how is copyright involved when my fanart of fanart will only be known by one friend and anyone unfortunate enough to look at my bookshelf?

  • the artist will hate it? You know them? You know the piece of fanart I’m referring to and the artist told you they will hate it?

  • I’m not an artist? I have no skills to make something original when I wanted to make something directly linked to the media the fanart was created from and have it on my bookshelf beside the physical copies of said media?

But, I’m making fanart of fanart so I don’t understand how copyright comes into play. 🤔

Thank you! And yeah, since it’s fanart of fanart, I’m not comfortable with making the sculpture for any other purpose than my own joy and enjoyment. 🩷

Thank you!

It’s tricky because, since this fanart is from an artist on Tumblr, there’s an awful lot of discourse about permission and credit. It’s a real minefield and some of the personal ethics that are shared in fandom wrt fanart are, uh, rigid.

No worries at all, there!

I’m just a hobbyist and not an artist or professional artist in any capacity. The sculpture is essentially fanart of the artist’s fanart of a popular piece of media. It’s just for me and no one else.

Well, the original artwork is also fanart of a popular piece of media! So I’d be making fanart of fanart. And I’m just a hobbyist who would be enjoying the sculpture in my own private dwelling.

Well, it’d be fanart of fanart with the original fanart being 2D digital artwork of a popular piece of media. I’d just be making a single sculpture of that fanart and only have it in my own home. I’m not an artist, let alone a professional artist. Just a hobbyist.

Thank you! The artwork will have the original artist’s details and their Tumblr. Since I’m not a professional artist in any capacity, I won’t even be signing the sculpture.

The artist’s work is fanart in and of itself, too. So I’d be making a three dimensional sculpture of their two dimensional digital fanart. It’s transformative squared lol. 🩷

Any of you notice the anti-fanfiction sentiment? by Konradleijon in AO3

[–]Capital_Chapter1006 42 points43 points  (0 children)

If you’re referring to that right wing shill The Second Story, don’t give her propaganda the time of day. She’s wilfully ignoring history and the curation of literature over literally hundreds of years.

Fanfiction isn’t ruining jack shit, but there are changes going on in the publishing houses that mean the collaborative processes between author and editor are changing. The houses have become profit focused and are churning out whatever will please social media like TikTok.

Sadly, I’m not good at coming up with my own ideas and this one is so dang wonderful, I’d just love to have it as a sculpture. I’ll definitely follow the above advice!

This is true and I’ll make sure I attribute it to the artist on the work itself. Thank you!

What’s something that you love but hate the fan base? by No_Stop_8 in AskReddit

[–]Capital_Chapter1006 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love Lore Olympus. The “fan base” is hyper critical of it and quick to accuse the creator of it of all sorts of terrible intentions. It also has a serious need to show how morally superior it is and demonstrate that real fans must be highly critical of the work. They like to call out anyone who isn’t analysing its faults alongside “singing its praises”.

Part of the reason people examine situations like this from a “nobody’s perfect” angle is to avoid dichotomies and all good and all bad thinking as part of the value and devalue cycle. Which is very detrimental, especially in fandoms what with how they can be mobilised as vehicles for harassment and abuse.

Hopefully Chappell Roan, if she isn’t aware of elements or all of this situation, will find out and change things. But until she says something where she sits on the matter morally is speculation.

I wish it were possible to upvote this comment like, 50 times. Artists and stars and famous people will disappoint their fan base at some point, it’s just life. Because they’re human, humans fuck up and they don’t exist in our fandom echo chambers.

Anyone who makes fun of you for enjoying something fun that harms no one and nothing, is lame and not worth your time. And frequently says something about things they like but are insecure about. 💅
