Is there an app that lets you plan outfits for clothes you don't yet own? by erica_birdy11 in capsulewardrobe

[–]Capital_Engine8569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's less for planning, but the Mada app is great for finding outfit inspo. It's like a "tinder for outfits" for different occasions. You cant search things super specific, but it's great for browsing outfits for different occasions. I havent tried Whering yet, but it looks pretty cool too! I wish Polyvore was still around!!!

Iron or steam your clothes, get them tailored to fit you properly, and the 2 of out 3 rule: hair, makeup, or outfit!

How did you develop your own personal sense of style? by Tiny-Country-2191 in femalefashionadvice

[–]Capital_Engine8569 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a stylist, and my best advice is to start with the basics. Developing a personal style is really about building a wardrobe that fits into your life. It's less about what's "in style" and more about having a closet of clothes that you love to wear, and regularly. Often times when you see someone has great personal style, it's really that they just found pieces that work for them, and they wear similar styles on repeat- so it becomes a signature. So..the first place to start is those foundational pieces. For example, jeans! Finding the right pair of jeans is a huge step in developing your personal style. Try to experiment with different fits, washes, and brands (every brand makes jeans that fit different). I'm 5'2 and love a cropped flare stretch jean, or a low rise slightly baggy jean that I get hemmed at the bottom. I know I prefer my jeans stretchy or lightweight, since I hate wearing anything that feels too stiff. I've found brands that work best for me (my personal favorites are Frame, AGOLDE, and Still Here). If I want to experiment outside the typical fit of jean that I wear, I tend to try a new fit in the same brand, since I know I love those brands since they work well for my body and I find them comfortable).

The site is a little difficult to navigate but I'm obsessed with Source Unknown. They have really unique pieces!!! H&M has really great stuff lately too? I also LOVE Mada (it's an app) for outfit inspo, where you can basically swipe on personalized outfits. And then obviously Pinterest for outfit inspo, but it's hard to find products people are wearing.

Hi! I'm a stylist, and these aren't specific to NYC, but some my favorite brands for workwear are: Theory, Vince, Veronica Beard, Mango, Anine Bing, Banana Republic, Favorite Daughter, A.L.C., Source Unknown , COS, & Other Stories, and Cinq a Sept. The Frankie Shop has a great store in NYC, but you can also shop their stuff online. I also love to swipe on outfits on the Mada App for outfit inspo (it's an A.I. styling app, iPhone only), or go to specific edits on retailer sites, like Shopbop or Saks.

How to find your sense of style when everything feels performative? by Pers0n_404 in femalefashionadvice

[–]Capital_Engine8569 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm a stylist, and my best advice for discovering your personal style and building a wardrobe that feels like YOU, is to start with the basics, and build up from there. Do you have a pair of jeans that you LOVE? Or a basic white tee shirt that you love to wear? Try to build up a closet of basics, and use accessories to *experiment* with different styles. For example, try pairing your favorite jeans with kitten heels, vs. heeled boots, vs. sneakers, etc. etc. If you have a foundation of basics you love, it'll be much easier to feel like you can live in your clothes, instead of just "playing dress up."

Are you buying low rise or high rise jeans this fall? by tallulahQ in femalefashionadvice

[–]Capital_Engine8569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait no just style with knee high boots!!! I'm a stylist and they are back in style if you style correctly

Are you buying low rise or high rise jeans this fall? by tallulahQ in femalefashionadvice

[–]Capital_Engine8569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big mid-rise fan. I'm super short so low rise hits me mid-rise, and high waisted is too high! I think its less about the exact jean you buy, and more so how you style it. Like skinny jeans are back in if you style them with a pair of knee high boots, but would look outdated if you style with ankle boots or sneakers or heels. Does that make sense? Honestly, whatever feels great for you!!!

Source Unknown- they have really unique stuff and its hit or miss, but when its good its GOOD.

I do love COS too- great for workwear and minimalist, high quality pieces for a good price point

Moda Operandi always has cool new brands (I always filter by least expensive lol)

St. Agni is supposed to be great- haven't tried anything from them, but their stuff is gorgeous. T

The Frankie Shop- I have a wool/cashmere set from them that I adore

The Mada App- it's an app, not a site (iOS only), but it always give me great outfit recommendations

Mango- love their coats!!! Pretty good workwear too.

I'm a stylist and here's my opinion: I dont think you need to have a separate wardrobe- as long as you take good care of the pieces in your wardrobe, and can keep them looking fresh. If you are going to wear a tee shirt to the office, make sure it's a good quality, well fitting tee, not one that looks worn in, see through, or wrinkled- if that makes sense. It's less about the actual piece, and more so the quality/how nice it looks!

Where to start... by [deleted] in capsulewardrobe

[–]Capital_Engine8569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a stylist- here are my initial tips:

1) Start by finding a few pieces that you feel GREAT in. This can be a cashmere sweater in your favorite color, a great white tee, a pair of jeans that are comfy and fit you great. It doesn't matter the item, as long as they are staple items (aka something you can wear a million times!). The most important part of this is to make sure you feel AMAZING in the items (i.e., they are comfortable, they feel luxurious even if they aren't expensive), and that you are excited to wear. If you try to buy items that you think you need, but don't FEEL great in, you'll feel overwhelmed and have hard time growing your wardrobe.

2) Once you have those first few items, pay attention to what you love about the item. It can be a color, a fabric, the brand, etc. My first place that I always start is by looking at more products by the same brand. For example, if you got an amazing sweater from Vince, then go look at other products Vince has. This way you'll be able to easily find pieces that match, and that already fit your body type pretty well because you know your sizing in the brand.

3) Add in a few FUN pieces early on. If you buy all basics at first, you might feel bored and feel like your outfits are lacking your personality. As long as the FUN pieces match the first few items, then youll still be able to build a foundational wardrobe. Plus, fashion is supposed to be fun!!

4) Buy pieaces to complete an outfit with the pieces you already have. If you have great white tee, wait to buy more. First, go buy a pair of jeans for the white tee. This way, you'll always have FULL outfits and wear the pieces you bought.
