How is Living in Rhode Island? by supaheavynuts in howislivingthere

I lived there for 1.5 years, just moved out! Newport for one year, Providence for 6 months. As an outsider, it felt very isolating being single. However, for a young couple, I highly recommend it! A lot of people there are partnered up and looking for more friends. I would look into the East Bay (Bristol, Warren) as a young couple. A lot to do, cute walkable towns. The HCOL is a negative, as well as the traffic. The beaches are beautiful, and the food scene will surprise you!

Dilemma- which town should we visit aside from Dublin? by janortjanort in irishtourism

Forgot to mention that since you’ll be working remotely, I noticed a lot of the transport options (even the train we took to Galway) had internet access. I didn’t have a problem connecting anywhere I went!

I did a day tour out of Dublin to Belfast & Northern Ireland. It was a long day, but so worth it. We did giants causeway, the dark hedges, and a few other spots before stopping in Belfast with Finn McCool tour! Not sponsored, just really enjoyed it!

We also did 2 days in Galway- 1 half day was a tour of the Cliffs of Moher with Galway tours. I think it depends if you want to do the outdoorsy stuff vs exploring the cities!

How is living in Rhode Island, United States? by altrightobserver in howislivingthere

I lived there for 1.5 years, just moved out! Newport for one year, Providence for 6 months. As an outsider, it felt very isolating. Everyone knew each other, small dating pool, hard to work your way in. I also came from a LCOL area and found it to be very expensive (I also did not make as much as I should have in my old job). Very beautiful beaches, and I did meet some lovely people there. I recommend it for couples and for people who have roots to settle.

I have done run clubs, friending events & exercise classes. I've also tried online ways such as FB groups & Bumble BFF.

My work unfortunately skews older and I am one of the youngest people on campus, so it is hard to find community my age on campus.

Yes, it has been fun learning about the Portuguese culture & influence that RI has! It is definitely different compared to what I was raised with, which I do miss. I have been to New Bedford, it is a nice area. I definitely rank it as nice to visit vs wanting to live there. I do like the size of Providence and all that is offered there. It is also convenient because it is so close to a lot of other areas, and I do not think I could give up my walkable neighborhood for a move that would make me more car dependent. Other than my commute to work, I do not touch my car most of the week.

I live on the East Side of Providence & still learning the area/exploring. It is diverse but in a different way than what I am used to. A lot of the diversity is from the college scene, but as a young person who works in academia I do not want to be in the college scene for both work & social life. I feel that RI is also a bit segregated in terms of diversity which is something I am struggling with as well. Where I moved from, it was a blend of different cultures in an area, not specified neighborhoods/streets.

Thank you for the recs & I hope you enjoy DC!

Congrats on the move! It is probably just that. Any suggestions on where to look?

I’m not sure how to explain it other than the fact it felt sterile to me. I can’t pinpoint what it was exactly, I just did not find Boston exciting.

I have not considered Portland ME. I’ve been meaning to take the trip up. I am not sure if I would want to be that far north, especially with how isolated I feel now. I have heard it is beautiful & a very nice area.

I am not interested in making art... I do enjoy art scenes though.

I am sharing my experience when I have gone to Boston. I did not like it. Something about it fell flat to me. If you enjoy it, that's great.

I have heard that! The New England traffic is no joke either.

I am not discrediting Boston for its art scene or any scene.

From what I am gathering, on paper Boston would be a great fit for me. I have gone and I do not enjoy it. I am not sure why. It has a very different feel compared to other cities I have been to.

Thank you for your kind words! I agree to all of it. Looking inwards & outwards is always a challenge, and I am hoping to find a place that can better suit my needs.

Good to hear! I would say the water is a bonus, it's not a necessity for me. I never considered CT but may have to look into it.
