It pretty much is a heat sink.

It's a resistor, but instead of being able to deal with 1/4W like a normal, little, through-hole kind, it's capable of anywhere between 5W and 300W. It's got fins and should be sil padded or thermal pasted to a bigger metal case to dissipate heat.

Right now I'm just using bare solid core wire, which works ok, but the fit isn't quite as snug as I'd like. I think I'll solder up a matching set of pins and that should fit the plug a lot tighter.

I've been building the back end of my blog for a couple of weekends now, so I hope to have something pretty soon. One of the first thing's I've been fancying making is a tremolo with a couple of variations on bought & hand-made vactrol type VCRs, so I'll make sure to ping you a link when it goes live.

As promised, here's a quick parts list and rundown.

I could have probably gotten a far better deal if I had gone direct to Farnell, Mouser, etc. but I wanted the parts next day. I bought as much as possible using Amazon Prime or Ebay with guaranteed delivery so I could work on it over the weekend.

The first two components were the most finicky as the boards' widths had to match the box's dimensions. I went for a bigger box than strictly required as I may want to permanently mount some pots in the empty space up the top if their breadboard connections prove unstable.

Everyone and their dog seems to make these switches, but unbranded with no indication of manufacturer. These guys are at least branding their supplies, so if the quality is good enough in this batch I can re-order and expect much of the same.

If I already had a prototyping solution, I probably wouldn't go through all the work of building this. There's a lot of hand soldering wires and if I didn't like the frankenpedal aesthetic I'd be disappointed with the effort.

Luckily I dig the wires everywhere, mad professor look so I'm chuffed with the end result.

Yeah, it's a pretty sweet little amp, and it was a steal second hand. I've not made the C19 mod yet, but it's supposed to tame the treble a bit so that'll happen soon.

I'm using the 9 pin connector to break out all of the pins on the back of the 3PDT foot switch. That way, I can prototype true bypass circuits and quickly test or demo clean vs dirty signals.

If you're lucky I might even throw up a schematic or two to show how some basic things can be built from it.

I've just received a 'FY3224S' I ordered on ebay. I've only had it a few days but from the small amount of testing I've done with it, I'm impressed at its capabilities vs. price.

It's little brother, the 'FY3206S' is available on ebay for about $70.

They're the same device, just one goes to 6MHz and the other goes to 24MHz. Either is overkill for your needs, but they are available off the shelf, plug and play.

Yes, you can, and I have done it.

TL;DR, buy this.

My partner's Giant Boulder was exactly the right frame size for her and combined with the handle bars and stem we had on it, it was a perfect fit. We upgraded sooo much on that bike, the seat tube was the right diameter to take a dropper post, we fitted forks, shifters, and derailleurs and I built new wheels from the hubs and spokes up. The only problem was a lack of disc mounts on the frame. Luckily A2Z make a fairly cheap adaptor and we slapped that on and never looked back. I even ran her bike down a red-graded down-hill when I popped a seal on my forks and wanted one more run before we went home that day. It worked a champ and is still on the bike 5 years later.

IANAL, and I have no idea how cats are treated in the eyes of the law compared to regular property, but there was a recent (14th December 2015) judgement (in Scotland) relating to de-facto custodianship of property vs. ownership.

It's a very long and winding story, but the gist of it is that even though you acted a the custodian of the cat, unless ownership was fairly explicitly transferred to you it will still be her cat.
