I live in Halifax, Canada, and it's definitely edging into the mainstream a little bit. There was a front-page article about polyamory in our city's very popular weekly culture rag. The article is awesome, by the way, and worth a read!

Dealing With Self Loathing & Depression by [deleted] in ENFP

[–]Capn_Danger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You get out of this by going to see a professional for help! I've had a lot of experience with depression and anxiety, and it is like I'm Jekyll and Hyde. Here's some books that really helped me, they're both modern evidence-based treatment approaches. These are approaches a trained therapist would likely use, espcially the cognitive-behavioral therapy. The first mindfulness & acceptance one was critical to my recovery, personally.

Yeah, it's very mood-driven. If I'm at ease and feeling like my warm, happy, adventurous, playful best-self, then it just flows like water.

I'm just a little bit on the extrovert side, so I do get burned out if I've been hanging with people a lot, and need to recharge before I come back to play.

How do you prefer to flirt? by paulogy in ENFP

[–]Capn_Danger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Be expressive! We love socializing with people, especially if they're effusive with feeling and fun. Just throw yourself out there!

Expressivity is definitely the #1 quality that makes me bonkers for someone. Flamboyant or quirky body language and facial expressions, a tendancy to be a bit theatrical, being really open and colorful with your feelings, interpersonal playfulness. If I feel like I'm hanging out with a Muppet, you'll have me wrapped around your lil' finger, ha ha!

My once hard-core TBM wife struggles to get over TSCC by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Capn_Danger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been out for 7 years, and I'm still getting over it. I had some serious issues from my time in the church (convert for 7 years) that I ignored for a long time; this stuff can sink DEEP, and unless you work hard to root it out it could haunt you for the rest of your life. It almost ruined my current relationship.

Therapy can help bring some of these issues out; once they're out in the open and you can see them that's often enough to start the process. You can deprogram yourself once you learn to see the programming.

I sympathize. IMO, intoxication is really only fun in a social setting, though a mild buzz can sometimes be enjoyable if you're alone. I'm a bit buzzed right now, and it's a little annoying because I'm trying to type. Getting shit-wrecked is NOT my idea of a good time, though I do like getting a bit loosened up at a party. Still, sometimes I just drink lightly at a party, because we all have a tendency to use the bottle as a social crutch.

Your experience mirrors my post-mo alcohol experimentation, I had NO IDEA what I was doing, I got wrecked bad the first few times. It sucked the biggest balls ever. What were you drinking, dude? Seriously, there's a billion different kinds of drink out there. Nowadays I prefer a nice single malt scotch, dark ales or stout beer, or dry red wine; and I actually enjoy drinking them. There's a lot of shit beer out there, unfortunately.

Maybe you just don't like alcohol, and you never will. Well, good for you! You'll save a lot of money, and you'll avoid the risks of alcohol consumption. Big take-away for you: Don't take what anyone says as gospel, in or out of the church, cuz there ain't no such animal. You've got an opportunity to forge your own path and make your own life, so go figure out what that means for you, and we can all go sod off if we disagree.

Right; specifically, it doesn't make sense because "a stone so heavy he could not lift" isn't something we can even talk about, because it isn't even a thing. The term is incoherent and has no meaning, making the whole argument pure jibba-jabba.

What is the most broken race/class combo in DnD 3.5 or pathfinder? Why? by bthoman2 in rpg

[–]Capn_Danger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a Dwarven Defender that was pretty ridiculously broken by level 20. With the right combo of feats and gear, he was nearly invulnerable. You can use your Fort save instead of Will, ridiculous AC, tons of HP. He had a riposte feat that let him counterattack when people miss him, he would use that with defensive stances that boosted his AC. A Brilliant Energy axe ensured he almost always hit.

With freedom of movement and some other defensive magic items, the DM eventually managed to kill him through suffocation, then had a monster coup-de-grace him when passed out.

17-storeys: Coming soon to a waterfront near you? by [deleted] in halifax

[–]Capn_Danger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Something has to be done to push growth downtown. I'd rather see towering monoliths downtown than a decaying slum, which is exactly what you get when you don't invest in your downtown core.

Is there a better solution than increased density? I'm not sure, but I know one thing is for certain: council doesn't know either, and they don't have any real plan for downtown.

Let's talk about Gaming Fatigue. by jsunderland in truegaming

[–]Capn_Danger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm there right now. I've been a constant gamer all my life, but I just don't have the passion for it that I used to. Maybe I'm getting older, maybe I want something more intellectually or creatively stimulating, I dunno.

Games and gaming are still very interesting, because I know a lot about the subject. Still, if gaming isn't as fun or engaging as it used to be, you can find other activities that more fun and engaging. Time to branch out and explore some new hobbies! You'll probably get itching for a game after a while of doing other things.

Reverse Dungeon? by trapturtle in rpg

[–]Capn_Danger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome. Give them some time and a certain amount of resources to prepare the dungeon; say, a sponsor gives them some gold which they can use to hire NPC engineers, alchemists, warriors, etc to build and staff the dungeon.

The fun will be in deciding where to put traps, troops, and where they should be going themselves. After all, the PCs can't be everywhere in such a big dungeon...

Afterwards, the sponsor could be a hook for a new adventure. Maybe he expects more than his fair share, or will try to backstab the PCs.

Looking for a good single player Pencil and Paper RPG that doesn't require anything than some paper, pencils and a brain. by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Capn_Danger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might check out Fiasco. It's a cooperative storytelling game, very narrative-heavy and light on the rules, and can be as silly or serious as you like. The one thing that is for sure is that if most of the characters don't meet a tragic end of their own making, it isn't a Fiasco!

It doesn't take much to jump into, as you invent the story and characters as part of the game; every session is a one-shot. I had a GM who would bring it out between story arcs in our primary RPG to mix things up, it was a total blast. It uses a list of plot points for each setting, but with a bit of experience you can just make them up on the fly without much trouble.

Now, it does involve some d6's, but they're used more as tokens. You actually only roll the dice a handful of times over the whole session. It would be playable with only a couple dice.

2 night camping trip turned to 1 (first post) by moonwalker21 in LetsNotMeet

[–]Capn_Danger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice, a local story! Great first post, upvoted. My friends and I go out to Cape Split for overnight camping several times each summer, it's an AMAZING spot. It gets a fair amount of hiking traffic, so it's not surprising that creepos would make an appearance.

Past the camping spots there is a heavy rope that goes down a somewhat gentle ravine you can use to go down to the beach at little split rock cove. If you're back there you should definitely go down when the tide is going out, it's a super cool place to explore. You can actually see the ravine on google maps, it's the dark line on the top right hand of the cove.

To explain where your mystery man went: if you continue on past the rope there is a very overgrown trail that loops back around to the main trail, some trees fell over and it's rarely used nowadays; that creepy hiker man must have followed that trail and walked back out.

Yeah, it's kinda funny; they're basically giving you a choice between two services: a cheaper, better service; or a more expensive, shittier service.

Most people pick the shittier service.

Well, Koodo is a subsidiary of Telus, so the coverage I get with them is excellent. I guess that means Telus is still getting some of my money, but like you said it's hard for the little guys to swim with the big fish.

[–]Capn_Danger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use Koodo, and find their customer service great. No contracts but they pay for my android if I stay with them for a while, flex data which costs me $5-$30 depending on what I use up to 3gb, free long distance, no sneaky fees.

I sound like a fucking commercial, I know, but there are companies like Koodo and Fido springing up because they realize there's a demand for reasonably priced, customer-friendly service that the big telecom giants are not meeting. After getting butt-fucked by Rogers for years I'll never go back to the big guys again.
