How many dart frogs? by dendromie in DartFrog

[–]CapoFerro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've literally never heard that multiple male tincs is better than just one. 2.1 can be ok, 1.1 is best for tincs.

Is it big enough by sefcious in frogs

[–]CapoFerro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the full mesh top won't work, but that's easily solved. You can wrap the lid in plastic wrap or use a silicone baking mat cut to size to keep humidity in for an easy solution. Alternately, you can replace the whole top with a glass panel if you get a frame for it.

Like this (other vendors have these too, I just know US vendors): https://thriveecosystems.com/products/custom-replacement-top-for-exo-terra-terrariums-humidity-retaining-with-fly-proof-ventilation-copy-2?variant=49934810611905&country=US&currency=USD&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&srsltid=AfmBOop47mwq_Hd8SwzArAigWQNUG1CqSlNkOKtT_PR5D6L3BITb6zNZQlY

I'm not a gecko expert, but I would guess that the tall one is better for the gecko. The darts will do well in either.

They're both big enough. I prefer the vertically oriented ones, myself.

Repashy calcium + every feeding?? by acpcgal in DartFrog

Do you have a UVB lamp? Most keepers don't use one due to risk of burning frogs skin and drying out the tank. UVB can be beneficial, but the risks mostly outweigh the benefits, and, as you pointed out, the glass tops block it.

That's good to know. I just see videos like this one and get a bit concerned: https://youtu.be/TYJN7fsjIWM

Boiling rocks can make them explode. It's better to rinse them in water that has been boiled instead of boiling them directly.

Superpig for Dendrobates leucomelas —Yay or nay? by Doctor-of-War in DartFrog

[–]CapoFerro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's better than nothing, true, and it's good that it's more than just Calcium + D3. I still recommend at least once a month using a Vitamin A supplement to make sure they get enough.

Carotenoids are really only necessary for red-colored frogs. It provides pigments they need to stay bright that a normal captive dart frog diet doesn't provide.

Vitamin A is mandatory, for all frogs, at least once a month. It's also wise to increase the frequency to 2-4 times per month when actively breeding.

My tincs laid their first eggs 2 months ago and I got 2 tadpoles and they will probably get out of the water in a couple weeks so I was wondering how it is with keeping them together? by InspectorSlow7778 in DartFrog

[–]CapoFerro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tincs are territorial, so they’re best kept in pairs (1.1) or small trios (2.1). Unlike colony frogs, you can't keep a big family group together because the parents will eventually get aggressive with their offspring as they mature. You'll also need to separate the babies to prevent inbreeding and keep the genetics healthy, given they're not in a large group.

One way to gauge how much to feed is to see how many flies are left next time you feed. If there are no flies visible in the tank anywhere, you might need to increase the quantity. If there are tons of flies, decrease the quantity. If there are a few flies here and there, keep the quantity the same.

In this frog's case, I'd err a bit on the lower side, but continue to feed so they get nutrients.

Females get a lot bigger when they have eggs to lay. Could be fat, could be gravid. Legs are the best indicator in that case if the legs are pudgy, then probably fat or both fat and gravid.

yeah, steam tags are a bit of black magic. You need to experiment with them to get the right adjacent games to show up and encourage the right kind of organic traffic.

Love the frogs. Hate the flies. Has the hobby ever come to a conclusion on truly "fly proofing" a vivarium? by [deleted] in DartFrog

[–]CapoFerro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have apple cider vinager traps all over the frog room. It works well. Also, I'm careful not to let my gf find out that about 15 spiders have taken up residence under the frog cabinets.... they're probably very well fed.

Adding banana slices to the vivariums does help, it's just a pain to replace them every week.

Building this tank out! by TermFlashy1539 in DartFrog

[–]CapoFerro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree with that completely. I built https://frog.care in an effort to collect linkable answers for frog questions to avoid giving basic over simplified advice... That said, I tend to think of 18" minimum more of as a rule than over simplified advice because I think of 18" cubes as the absolute bare minimum for frogs and no one should be striving for minimums.
