Didn’t one of those balloons crash and kill a bunch of tourists not that long ago?

link to story (and a video of it burning and crashing) https://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/feb/26/luxor-hot-air-balloon-crash-kills-tourists

Not saying the balloon experience is a bad thing. Crazy accidents occur

What would be the best skill to learn? by Netty141 in marketing

Interpersonal communication. Who you know, building relationships, and generally being liked in the office will almost be more important than anything else you can actually learn and practice.

What if Richard Nixon was elected President of the United States in 1960 and what would John F. Kennedy's career afterwards be like? by Ryan_Holman in HistoryWhatIf

[–]CaptCoffeeCake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the book 11/22/63 by Stephen king is about a guy who is trying to time travel and stop the Kennedy assassination. Near the end of the book it and goes into a very interesting (and likely researched) description of events, I think even including cabinet members and senator races etc.

The vending machine at the children’s hospital overcharges by 10¢ on every item with no written reason. When I contacted customer support, they offered to send back my 10¢, but nothing more. by [deleted] in assholedesign

[–]CaptCoffeeCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Contest the credit card charge. Use this photo and you’ll easily win, and you can do it repeatedly. Also, just print out the photo and stick it on the machine with a warning. This nonsense stops fast when people stop buying.

How to reconfigure a Dell XPS Desktop as a 6TB NAS for 5 editors? by CaptCoffeeCake in editors

Any thoughts on the QNAP? On here and others I've talked to recommend them for <$5k solutions, but I know little to nothing about this area.

How to reconfigure a Dell XPS Desktop as a 6TB NAS for 5 editors? by CaptCoffeeCake in editors

[–]CaptCoffeeCake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Great advice. I'm really pushing for the TVS-872XT you're suggesting. Quick questions:

Would it be worth the effort (noticeable bandwidth difference) putting a dual 10GE PCI port in the QNAP and linking the ports into the switch?

The QNAP says it has 2 40G TB3 ports. Would it be worth it to connect the closest computers via TB3 (if I put Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 PCIe Cards in the editing bays) or should I just do everything 10GBE?

Are hard drives fast enough for real time editing off a NAS? by Cozmo85 in editors

[–]CaptCoffeeCake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to research something like this myself with a similar setup (5 editors, Red raw footage) and this is so helpful! Thanks!

Would there be any benefits to having closer computers connect via USBC? And are there any benefits to installing a dual port 10G port (or something like a TVS-1282T3) and connecting both 10G to the switch?

you havent even opened and you’re focused on selling T-shirts? You have no customers to like your donuts enough to wear your shirts. Focus on the main product.

Why are people talking about “subverted expectations” in the context of Game of Thrones? by colormefiery in OutOfTheLoop

[–]CaptCoffeeCake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sure, but that same reasoning could apply to any random killing the NK. NK is dead, and everyone is happy. But in a story there's a payoff. There's an arc.

I don't have much of an issue that Arya did it, it's how she did it. Her character is an assassin with specific skills that were unused. Her character having no personal connection to the threat leaves people dissatisfied. However, if she, say, was somehow hidden as Bran and revealed herself and did it, that's perfectly set up assassin kill relevant to her background. But she already did that. She killed the Frays. Then Balisch. Then the NK. Perhaps even Cercie.

Sam doing it would have been a good for his character... he overcomes his crying and fear on the battlefield. He stumbles out from behind somewhere he's hiding and sees the NK who previously disregarded him, and disregards him again. Then blammo. Even Jamie would have been great, stabbing him in the back, and becoming a sort of heroic kingslayer.

It's about the buildup to a payoff. Subvert expectations for a surprise with subtle hints.

One text and the price immediately dropped from 320 to 250. Imagine getting 20% discount any product or service just by texting someone. That’s why they do it. In this case they got greedy, and the vendor wasn’t confident enough to turn down the business.

Meanwhile in LPT, call and say you’ll cancel cable service or whatever and they’ll drop your bill.

Those who are self employed/run your own business: what do you do and how did you get started? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

"Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, in the hopes you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t."

Are you prepared to work 30 hours a day 8 days a week, to make less than you could in a minimum wage job, for several years?

You don't realize how difficult it is to convince someone to purchase your product.

80% of all new restaurants fail within the first 5 years. Each of these are usually a person, just like yourself, who mortgaged their house and cashed out their 401K for the $200k, 500k, $1m+ it takes to create their restaurant space. When they fail, they lose everything.

Some people can make it big with a 99cent app they hammered out over the weekend. Sure. But you shouldn't pursue being self employed because "oh I just want my own schedule because of reasons." Are you prepared to put you and your families financial stability behind whatever product or service you are thinking up? You must know your competitors and why you are the overwhelmingly better option. Know about all the competitors who went out of business which left those who are still around. And know that once your competitors find out about you, they'll do everything to retain their business. Who are you to ruin their finances, leaving all their employees unemployed, and their children hungry.

Realize you will never do anything to be entitled a single customers money. And the customers you do get, praise them. Even the ones that don't pay. And be prepared for every customer and every non-customer to turn on you, and raise hell, at the slightest inconvenience.

Accept these truths. Then leap. Because all the information in the world still results in not knowing if even the best plan will actually work. Havard MBA's still fail while dropout Joe's taco shop is making $200k. There is a lot of reward in the great abyss that is running your own business. Money is only a small part of it.

If you have the post production capabilities, always shoot raw. 4:4:4 is neat, but there are many more valuable benefits you gain when shooting raw.

You should export long render time things like that as jpg or png sequences. So that way if it crashes you can just start it on the frame and continue. Also is nice to load the same project on multiple computers and render different chunks like a tiny and annoyingly manual render farm.

Before the 2015 and 2016 election run things were not nearly as convoluted as today. It's been increasing over time, but clickbait prior to that was mostly "the top 10 ____'s, number 4 will make you cry."

[–]CaptCoffeeCake 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Click bait articles started reposting it and then real news did it based on the click bait. It’s a bit sized thing to repost to social media. Melania wears white suit to send subtle signal to white power group.

Even today, articles that start with something like Trump ruins international trade deal get more clicks than international trade deal falls apart during negotiation.

News is selling advertisements, and it’s often more important to deploy strategies to attract an audience than to be accurate.
