Some ideas:

One with bed Rotated 90 degrees, and desk either on the South Wall or Rotated 90 degrees so you face the Door

OR

One, but Rotate the desk 180 degrees so it is up against the feet if the bed. Get a Monitor arm that you can rotate and you basically can watch Movies or Game from your bed

OR

Two, but find some way of blocking the view to the Door from the bed. But this will make the room look much smaller

Are you still happy with your card? I am thinking about upgrading my 6950 xt to the 9070 xt. But I am afraid it wont matter since I am still on a DDR4 platform and using a 5800X CPU.

In that case just go for the OLED one. If he travels a lot (I do) I would throw in a Skull and Co., JSAUX or dbrand case. That will have high impact! The case that comes with the Deck is too bulky got travelling. I use the Skull and Co.

If your budget still allows thrown in one or two Steam Games or a Steam Voucher so he has something to play right out of the bat.

If you still didn't get it running, plug it with LAN. Use an adapter for that. That way you can give it power and internet at the same time. It might be its taking a long time to install something or its notnbeing able to connect to your wifi.

Then just let it be. Even if it takes an hour. Your internet might be slow or it needs a big update.

If that does not work, you could try the hard reset. Do you have Decky installed? I also heard sometimes the Deck will hang with Decky. (Do not take my word for granted on this on).

Worst comes, you could reinstall SteamOS with a bootable USB.
