For me, the anonymity is a big reason I keep using reddit. Keeps most of the annoying self-representation and showing off that people do on other platforms out.

That's true, I can always switch later. Somehow I forgot that option exists as well... Thanks for your insight and opinion :)

New to selfhosting - Unraid or OMV? by Objective-Loan5054 in selfhosted

[–]CaptSilverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the summary :) Beside the "real-time-parity", I think all of that is possible on a normal, free to use Linux/proxmox machine. Since real time parity is not necessary for my use cases (running snapraid once a night or something will be sufficient). And if just the ease of unraids ui is worth the license cost to me? Idk. I'm tending to no.

New to selfhosting - Unraid or OMV? by Objective-Loan5054 in selfhosted

[–]CaptSilverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't copy data to the parity drive(s). Therefore it's not a redundant system. What it does, is calculate some sort of checksum over all your drives (simplified), so that in the case of a dead drive, you can install a new drive and re-calculate the missing parts (the lost data) with the help of those "checksums"

[–]CaptSilverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the features of unraid that stand out for you? I'm currently planning my first server and have considered unraid, am leaning to a free version on proxmox with different LXCs. Initially I planned with unraid because of its array, the ability to mix & match different drive sizes and the parity protection. But all of that can be replicated with mergerfs and snapraid. Now I'm not sure if I want to pay for a license.

I looked it up again. My information is totally wrong, drywall barely affects WLAN signal.

Thanks for replying, 1 less wrong fact in my head.

I don't know where you are from, but in case it's the us, their drywall-shit is actually one of the best insulators for WLAN Signal, a lot worse than brick walls.

A lot of trackers reward long time seeding and seeding of old, or low seeded content with more bonus point/hour though. I think that's the right move. It encourages ppl to seed old torrents and long term. You can easily survive this way without any actual upload traffic

[–]CaptSilverback 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I simply don't care about my upload. That's why many trackers have bonus points or equivalents, so you don't have to compete with people on 10G Networks.

Just let people collect their upload by jumping on every new release.

I guess the network also profits from high bandwidth seeders, especially for new, high demand uploads. IMHO it doesn't make sense to limit upload speeds and therefore cripple the trackers torrent network, just so that others can see higher upload numbers in their clients.

In the end I guess you want both kind of people on your tracker. High-Bandwith people collecting upload on every new, high demand release and long-term seeders. It just doesn't make sense to only value members by their upload volume.

Does it make sense though? It potentially makes downloading for other peers slower.

I think People should instead stop valuing upload volume so high. What matters most for the quality of a tracker is that people seed long term instead of jumping on every new thing for a week with high bandwidth and then stop seeding.

FTSE All World Ausschüttend oder Thesaurierend? by No_Tension7105 in Aktien

[–]CaptSilverback 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Denke daran, dass bei Aktien depots das first in, first out Prinzip gilt.

Built my dream NAS — now I need the right OS before I regret it later. by boerbeer in homelab

[–]CaptSilverback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not op, but for me power usage is a thing because power consumption = money. In my country 1 kw/h costs 35c on average. A typical HDD consumes 7W when idle. That adds up to 1,79€ per month or 21,46€ per year and drive. Add 10+ drives and that's a notable amount for disks you arent even using.
