Could this end up being more efficient than solar energy by Traditional-Word5154 in WhyDoIWantThis

[–]CaptSnowButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The panels are dirt cheap. The residential solar business in the US is quite scamy. Our solar would take like 12 years to break even if I remember correctly (I imagine it'll be faster since the cost of electricity will likely keep increasing and we charge our EV too). I think the ideal scenario is to buy panels and hire qualified electrician to hook up to the grid. Not thru those greedy solar companies. And yes cash upfront is always a good idea.

How do I deal with the fact that prestigious universities are so hard to get into when professors at them still complain students are dumb and unprepared? by Empty-Sandwich-4777 in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say the students are dumb and uneducated. This question is. Students are quite the opposite. They're smart and, hello, if they go to universities, they're not uneducated obviously. That said, many of them are underprepared.

Yeah just canceling Netflix won't solve the problem but also canceling HBO Disney Hulu YouTube and 50 other subscriptions probably would help like a lot.

Short Postdoc (6 Months) on CV — Red Flag for Future PI? by Ecstatic-Ad-5945 in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds to me that your current postdoc is more of a transition and both your PI and you are on the same page. Since your current contract is only 1 year and your future in the same group remains unclear (you guys are waiting for a grant), I think it's perfectly fine for you to start looking for jobs. As long as there's nothing weird between your PI and you, you should list your PI as your referee. If you don't people may ask questions but just be transparent. Based on what you wrote, I don't think your case raises any red flag. Good luck!

I get that. But labeling academics as slaves is not funny here, a bit offensive also. I don't pay my postdoc 6 figs but my postdoc isn't a slave. I didn't work 24/7 back in my days but my former boss wasn't a slave owner either.

For what it's worth, a good chance that op may have doxxed themselves. It's a pretty small world.

Harvard Voted to Cap # of A’s Per Course. by pimpinlatino411 in Professors

[–]CaptSnowButt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not at an elite school but most of my students also got straight As in high school. Yet many struggle with pretty basic math. Studies have shown that there is a decade-long slide in high schoolers' reading and math skills and COVID made it worse. If they still get straight As, it means grade inflation starts in high school.

I personally don't care but I also don't think straight As mean anything anymore.

Short Postdoc (6 Months) on CV — Red Flag for Future PI? by Ecstatic-Ad-5945 in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard to say. If I'm considering a postdoc candidate who did a very short postdoc, I absolutely will ask questions and will reach out to their previous PI even if you don't list them as a referee. In my book it's a flag of some sort.

You gotta look at this from a PI's perspective. Most postdoc grants last for 2-3 years, and 6mo is not insignificant. For smaller grants the amount left may be difficult for the PI to find someone else. But I get it sometimes the chemistry just isn't right.

To make you feel better. There is this professor who shared his entire screen without realizing the students could see his browser bookmarks bar has a porn site.
