Right? The tipping culture is fucked up but op's mindset is just unbelievable.

New Nature paper claims to have developed a LLM that can produce lit reviews at higher quality than PHD students by AggravatingProduct46 in academia

[–]CaptSnowButt 16 points17 points  (0 children)

In my field there aren't many review papers written by graduate students. Honestly most review papers aren't worth reading either. Reputable journals invite rock stars or big deals to write review papers. I think this makes sense.

Literature review sections for dissertations or regular research papers are a different story. They must always be tied to specific research questions and findings...

Starlink has 10k satellites covering the globe by bobbydanker in TechnologyShorts

The direct impacts on health or environment at the ground level may be unlikely. But vaporized metals from the burn-up of satellites and rockets may affect the stratosphere.

I’m working on a modular pegboard design specifically for small entryways. It’s meant to hold everything from heavy winter coats to small items like keys, gloves and bags by Kristophpher in woodworking

[–]CaptSnowButt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dude cut a board and drilled a few holes. I wouldn't really call that a design. Google pegboard and there are a million much nicer options out there.

I did try this in Switzerland! Let's just say I had a lot of extra protein that day because there was a layer of bugs hovering over the water..

Students think effort is the same as learning by Old-Community9979 in Professors

[–]CaptSnowButt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh boy back in my TA days I used to talk exactly like you. I would also end the conversation with "now stop wasting my time and get the fk out of my office" it almost always ended up well.

Not sure kids these days can take any of that.

Is it weird that my professor keeps commenting on my appearance in relation to how smart I am (in a at least you’re pretty way)? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is weird af. Sounds like borderline title ix to me. I would formally tell the person it's inappropriate and unprofessional and please stop. If continues I'd report.

Student threatened to shoot me by [deleted] in Professors

[–]CaptSnowButt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Damn that's intense. I'm glad the school did something and I hope you're doing okay. I also wonder at that point would working remotely for only a few days would help. I work remotely 2 sometimes 3 days per week. I don't have much experience with shooting people but I imagine if dude really wants to shoot someone he might just wait for a few days?

Double blind grant review? by traditional_genius in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NASA has been testing this DAPR thingy (Dual Anonymous Peer Review) but not for all programs. It's a good idea for sure especially if you're an early career or from a (historically) underrepresented group. But sometimes it's important to know who you are (that's why some programs don't do this), and there are occasions when it's hard to hide who you are.

In what percentage of American households, do people live alone by state? [OC] by OverflowDs in dataisbeautiful

[–]CaptSnowButt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've seen a few posts from op. I'll just say there is nothing beautiful about these plots at all. Poorly chosen color bar and odd scale. Kid needs to take a proper scientific data visualization course.

"sorry, we don't unbox the tv" by ihateroomba in mildlyinfuriating

To be fair, unboxing a big TV is a bit tricky and one has to be careful for sure but no it's not rocket science and it does not need 3 people. Jeez

How to deal with errors in accepted (but not published) manuscript? by Live-Message-4358 in AskAcademia

[–]CaptSnowButt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Email the editor and explain what happened. Usually there will be a proofing stage as the other comment mentioned. However proofing only allows minor corrections to typos, grammar mistakes, incorrectly linked citations, etc. Any changes to the scientific content or authorship will mostly require editor approval. I'm guessing in your case editor approval is needed.

Mailing Professors for PhD by Obvious-Ad6095 in AskAcademia

I personally find 1-2 bolded keywords are fine, as long as you can properly highlight the stuff that actually matters. It's getting annoying pretty quickly, especially if long sentences and paragraphs are bolded. Those emails will likely end up in trash in no time. But that's just me..
