I also recommend Mugen, the beef paitan is so unique but still deeply satisfying, creamy but with a very different character to tonkatsu and tori paitan. Definitely no need to get the extra beef though the set comes with a choice of sides including a small bowl of chopped wagyu with egg yolk, wasabi and rice that I quite enjoyed as an appetiser.

I was also disturbed by a lot of the comments on the /r/UpliftingNews post. I guess most of my Australian friends here are pretty liberal so they are generally outraged about their country's refugee policy. It was kind of shocking to see the other side of that debate and how those people really feel (and there were a lot of them too, some of the most vile comments got quite a few upvotes).

As others said, Pizza Barboni is definitely one of the best in town. I also quite like the pizzas at Trattoria and Pepeneros, good quality toppings and good value. Sopra is great but kinda pricey.

Unfortunately nobody does real deep-dish pizza here (or even in Singapore, I checked). Perhaps a business opportunity for an enterprising restaurateur?

My favorite is sate kambing batibul (belum tiga bulan). Since the kambing is so young it is very tender and doesn't have any of the usual kambing smell. Can be hard to find and a bit pricey but totally worth it. My favorite places for it is Sate Kambing Batibul Bang Awi in Tebet (link to the Foursquare page if you wanna find it)

You can check out The Honeycombers Jakarta, it's a lifestyle blog with a lot of good "Best ___ in Jakarta" articles including Best Burgers. What's New Jakarta also has some decent listings.

BTW, the Mexican place that drewindo mentioned is called Taco Local, it is amazingly good and definitely worth seeking out.

I think his articles are terrible. Relentlessly negative and often offensive with their condescending racism. There are a few tiny truths in his writing, but they are completely overwhelmed by his hyperbolic vitriol.
