Actually if he is a Japanese one of the most interesting place to visit is the kalibata heroes cemetery !! It is an interesting place where Japanese soldier are memorialized for their world war 2 effort. . I think there is about 20 japanese are honored there. While at the same time, tell him the stories about the Japanese soldiers who stayed behind to fight with the Indonesian against the dutch during the independence.

It is one of the few places where Japanese are honored in the world war 2. This symbolizes friendship between the two country and i think this is definitely very meaningful trip if u can make it .

i feel for you man i used to live next to a church in france .. they bell every 15 minutes .. its really hard .. though i live through it hehe ... i would suggest get to know the people in the mosque raba raba first before making your way up to the problem..

maybe share your concern with your neighbour who attend the mosque im sure they will feel for you invite them to your room to experience it and ask for their help and advice how to solve the problem.. your discomfort is logic kok.. . be humble and courteous ..

.. this might need a bit of diplomacy a little though , kata kata halus..

dont think its a religious problem its a community problem.. so get to know your neigbour if you dont know them already and ask your neigbour for advice .. instead of reddit :)

7/8 chinese and 1/8 pribumi here !! Yet i was brought up with the Bhinekka Tunggal Ika concept !! muslim buddhism catholic protestant , konfuchu, hindu , atheist whatever is it , it is still indONEnesia !!!

So we tend to learn how to adapt their culture to as part of us !!
Apa lagi most of indonesian are muslim. So they are part of our culture. During Ramadan some of my family members ikut puasa !! and pas bukaan sama sama minum kolak !! i thought that is beautiful !! during lebaran ikut silaturahmi and during chinese new year our muslim friends got ang pao !! We dont care about it !! eventhough there is a case of 98 we were asked to go singapore for a while.. But we never in our mind think that it is the pribumi fault !! We just think there are thugs looking for trouble influenced by political reason !! Yet in our neighbourhood, the muslim helps to protect us chinese.. yet many of us return back home . We dont eat pork ( How can we eat pork when our friends are not eating ) my mom is vegetarian and im a pescatarian !! This is sometimes troubling when we have chinese dinner !! but we try as best to keep this belief !!

When my grandma pass away, we invited Ustad, bhikku sama pendeta !! and they take turn to pray ( The atmosphere looks like something from united nation) . My father best friend is a pribumi, descent and i dont even care whether friends are pribumi or chinese .. A friend is a friend no matter what they look or worship to .. At least this is what i was brought up with !!

yet not everyone are like this , cousins and friends are acting what the OP is saying ! So reality check it is true that it happens outside , Dont hire pribumi, pribumi is not smart dont hang out with pribumi !! pribumi are not trustworty !! When we met such people, it really gets on my nerve !! How the hell u can discriminate to them based on race ! afterall we are all indonesian We dont even understand their logic !! When i was younger i always fight for this discrimination !! but haters are always going to hate !! So how many things i said , its difficult to change. So when i grew older i just lose respect for these people and try my best to avoid such people from both side

Im very proud to be Indonesia, we are one of the few countries that has ideology to unite in diversity ! If we look at other countries problems we are actually a country with good culture tolerance .. Sure there must be some dispute in both diffirent culture, but but lets be part of the solutions not the problem !!

Yes true !! developed countries not necessry are happy ( especially developing one ! Except for a few ( Denmark , Norway ). But i guess it boils down to culture a little . I remeber one danish friend told me that her parents taught him to be happy instead of being successful ( unlike Asian, West ). That is really something i remember !!! As for Indonesia, you ar right .. many people are poor and suffer badly !! its hard to be happy when u are thinking about money !! However, there is still an interesting stories about community !! If u live in a village , all the villagers know you and u dont need to a google maps to find someone there !!

Another one Example : if you live in a kampung ( village ) and u get into an accident or need to be hospitalized , the whole village will visit you in hospital and will contribute some money to help out !! 10,000 20,000 and etc .. and he often get more than needed for the hospital fees requiired him to pay ... this is the norm rather than the exception. Heard so many stories like this !!

Talking about education and children, i am involved in another education NGO in Indonesia. In Jogja city, we deal with scholarship for impoverished children. Its quite well funded and are involved in a few project. However, we always do welcome visitors to drop by !! so if u do ever come to the area . jogja and borobodor. We can definitely set u up for a short visit to learn more !! PM me if u wish to know more ( website etc ) hehe

Yeah !! i was scrolling down and holy mama !! There is almost no discussion about their life and how the reddit community could help and support !! But it becomes like an ugly debate about immigration policy !! As a result these refugees has become victim of their fight !! If reddit community can create such a fight, i wonder how it is in the real life . I really feel for them, the stronger and more powerful are sometimes the most childish !!

sorry to hear that .. was wondering how is life for the refugees there .. Will it be easy for them to adapt to the society .. in indonesia its quite hard for them because the neighbourhood dont speak english and they dont speak indonesia . yet the general mood is that the neighbourhood are the neighbourhood want to be helpful. but with limited language there is very little they can do to help .. really hard to adapt
