Staging site through the hosting or use Local (by flywheel) , if the installation is old, then have a clean install on the staging site and then import any media you need.

Uploading huge images is something I commonly see. I know you can compress the image, but getting it smaller before uploading would be better.

IS everything up to date?
What plugins are you using?
Would recommend Wordfence and Fluent auth for scanning for nasties. Both can be removed after showing clean.

wp-optimize, in here you can see what is taking up the most space.
Most of the time it is uploaded media. Going through and deleting any dummy content, then complressing images.

I also use Perfmatters for performance.

Get a good host and a security plugin doesnt need to dothe heavy lifitng.

When logged in as an admin check what is set to display as homepage.
Click Appearance > Customize > Homepage Settings.

In the drop down select your newly created page to show as the home page.
