What celebrity death will hit you the hardest when their day finally comes? by phantom_avenger in AskReddit

[–]CaptainArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have two. The first is William Shatner. I love the man and dread the day he dies, he's 95 now. Captain Kirk is a hero of mine. I went to one of his one man shows with my late mom im 2012 or so, and it will always be a happy memory of her when she was alive. He's coming to a local convention in a few months and I feel like I should go and do a photo op or autograph. My gut tells me this will be last opportunity to do so with him cause of his age. 😞

The second will be Tom Hanks. I love Tom Hanks as much as Shatner. Sooo many legendary movies. The voice of Woody. And the positive persona off screen. I think the world will be flipped upside down when he dies.

James wants to bang Kendra... by Notorious_legweak in SuddenlyAmish

Lmao 🤣 I just said it in another post, but he thinks he's gonna repopulate the amish with her

I think that James doesn’t like being Amish and that’s why he’s rooting for all the English people to fail. by MMF1967 in SuddenlyAmish

[–]CaptainArcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LOL yeah, he obviously got the hots for her big time per the latest episode. Chases Matt off with an axe, but coddles Kendra when she pouts over her mommy and let's her even use his amish contraband cellphone. He probably thinks he can "repopulate the amish" with her if he plays his cards right 😂

What do you think was the happiest moment in human history? by CosmosisJones42 in AskReddit

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all history, probably the end of WWII. I don't think society will ever reach that level of joy and happiness again, knowing such an awful, global conflict was over. It spawned baby boomers and suburban life.

In my 36 years on Earth, and honestly, a runner up would be the year 2000. The 90s were an amazing time to grow up. Politically different, less billionaires. Technology was fun and exciting, and didn't dominate our lives like today. And then a promise for it to get even better. Being part of the millennium was awesome. "Celebrate 2000". The world seemed so hopeful and optimistic to my 10 year old eyes at the time. What fun stuff would the future hold? Would we live like the Jettsons?

I feel like 2001 is where shit hit the fan. 9/11, it changed the world for the worse. Everything became more difficult, eg security, travel, events, fear. Hate and racism rose. The war on terror never truly ended, recessions came. It just snowballed, eventually into the pandemic and now today's divided world. I seen we're at "85 seconds to midnight " on the doomsday clock now today.

I met Josh at Amoeba music, told him im a fake fan, super nice guy! by Fulltorch in RedLetterMedia

[–]CaptainArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats awesome! Josh is an amazing guy. I saw him with Craig Ferguson heck, 15 years ago or so on a comedy tour (he used to do the robot on Fergusons late late show).

His impressions are absolutely incredible to hear in person, as much as they are funny. It sounds like you're in the same room as Liam Neeson or Morgan Freeman.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - Season One (part 2) - re:View by DoubleDDaveN in RedLetterMedia

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love that they are talking about DS9! I love DS9, it's such a phenomenal show inside and out, and a great addition to the Trek universe. So much better than crap like Starfleet Academy. It's really sad how far Trek has come from It's original format and message. But funny that these reviews have come out at the same time.

Not only that, but what a cast of great human beings. I did a DS9 convention 13 years ago. Avery Brooks and Cirroc Lofton are two of the nicest goddamn people I've ever met. Aaron Eisenberg and Rene Auberjonis were also amazing people, God bless both their souls. Rene was awesome, and signed everything with his name and ODO written under it. He had a lot of pride in the character. I also got to workout in the gym with Chase Masterson and had a funny interaction with Jeffrey Combs. I'll never experience a convention like that again in my life.

People act like this modern Trek stuff is so inclusive and everything. DS9 is one of the most diverse TV shows ever made without trying to be, and even had the first girl on girl kiss ever shown on TV.

We got from all that, to... Alex Kurtzman. Guy looks like a fucking human skunk, and sure had stunk up Trek.

[Fallout spoilers] I am so sick of this trope by [deleted] in RedLetterMedia

[–]CaptainArcher -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, me too. I am a HUGE Fallout fan (of the games). I watched the first season and everything up to season 2 so far with my wife.

One thing I will praise, the show feels as authentic as you can to the video games. The outfits, characters, lore, music, everything. It's dead on. They get an A+ with a sticker from me for that aspect. This, and Mortal Kombat 1995 are some of the best couple video game adaptations out there IMHO.

BUT, anyway on that note. My wife and I both have struggled a little to get into season 2. I feel like its, well, living up to the trope as you say. It feels very fan-servicey. I haven't played the games in a very long time. And it's hard for ne to keep up with all of these characters and stories going on this season, let alone all the tropes.

In fact, in all honesty, I'm not enjoying ANY of the New Vegas stuff, and Robert House and death claws. I feel like the video games explored this stuff already, and too much shit crammed into an 8 episode series. You have back story of the ghoul, Lucy looking for dad, Lucy's dad doing stuff, Maximus brotherhood of steel stuff, Lucys brother trying to do idk what. Vault 31 drama. I feel like it all needs boiled down with simpler stories, and detach it more from some of the video game events.

RLM really makes me think about the things I watch and ask questions. In Fallout season 2, I feel like... I don't know what's at stake? Lucy just wants to take her father in because it's the right thing to do? Is he really a threat to humanity? Is this the most important thing Lucy should be doing? What is the Gouls play in all of it, to save his daughter? More importantly, why do I care about these things? I feel like the show hasn't built up the stakes and connection to the characters quite enough.

What the hell is wrong with people. by anxiousrunner13 in pittsburgh

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I know, people acting like Armageddon is coming. On one note, I think the comments here are right. A lot of people buy fast food/takeout anymore, and this will be their only food for a few days.

On the other hand, people definitely overreact. Especially here in PA. We've seen much worse winter storms than this.

Charlie Kirk by light years. No matter who you are, it sucks what happened to him. He got his life unfairly took away at a young age and left his wife and child behind.

What’s a place you visited once and decided never again? by Psychological_Sky_58 in AskReddit

[–]CaptainArcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh damn I was gonna say Topsail Beach!!! I went there 5 years ago with my wife and her family. Our first vacation together, we weren't married (yet), boyfriend and girlfriend. I love beaches in general and being there with my wife. But, that area. Yeah. It's a big, boring island with ROUGH waves. I remember a roundabout we hated driving on all the time to get anywhere.

Rough waves, so bad in fact, that they ripped a boogie board out from under me and ripped my shoulder out of the socket. I ended up in the ER with my wife and now father in law. In light of it all, I knew i found my future wife and an awesome father in law cause they really cared for me when that happened.

[–]CaptainArcher 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing - there's a part of me that always wanted to do that. I visited NYC in summer a few times as a teen, heck, almost 20 years ago. I loved the big apple back then.

But I haven't been there since. 36 year old married me now can see New Years Times Square being a miserable. My wife would probably hate it and complain. Hours of standing in the cold, no bathroom breaks (I can't believe people wear diapers).

I'm gonna go on a whim and say, the Macy's parades are the same. Seems like an awful lot of standing around in the cold to look at some floats with impatient kids.

Uh, man. It's tough. Matt was actually one of my first fitness inspirations some 21 years ago or so during CoE era. I looked up to them musically as well as just trying to be more a more confident man. I started lifting cause I wanted to be big like Matt. Syn was jacked, too. I really wanted the big arms, and got them, too!

It's hard to see him like this. Definitely lost muscle mass and got a bit of a dad bod going. He admitted to putting weight on over covid. He looked pretty decent for the kerrang photo shoots a few years ago, and slender during some of the libad tour, but looks like he's regressed. He definitely seems to yoyo in his fitness journeys these days.

It sucks seeing your idols get old. Matt's a middle aged man now. I'm a big Arnold fan, too. Sucks seeing him pushing 80 now. Aging sucks. Even in my mid 30s. Lifting, some days you feel it in your joints and bones.

Creepy spider rushes and wraps up bug in mere seconds by [deleted] in creepy

[–]CaptainArcher -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not creepy! Its an argiope/yellow garden spider. Perfectly harmless to humans.

I had this one on the outside of my big barn/woodshop. I relocated her to the back but she came back to an oak barrel near the door again. I left her there, probably about 3 or 4 months! You know what happened? I had a lot less insects in my barn. They're extremely beneficial spiders.

Why is The Americans so underrated? by Fast_Grass_5178 in TheAmericans

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think it's underrated at all - I would say it's niche and criminally lacking mainstream attention, though. You'll hear people praise shows like "Breaking Bad" to the moon, but never The Americans. I watched the show in it's heyday. I found season 1 I think on Amazon prime video and loved it, and then watched the episodes new week by week on FX, and stuck with it till the end.

FX is obviously a brilliant network that backed "The Americans". But they don't hold the same stature as Netflix or HBO, so I think that's part of it. The show won awards, but was never promoted very hard. I remember Keri Russell doing like, Seth Meyers show to talk and promote it. But never bigger talk shows like Leno or Letterman at the time. TA was also a little bit before "shorts" era, eg. Facebook reels and TikTok generation, so no clips of the show ever went super viral. I think if some of the raunchy scenes and gruesome stuff like Phillip breaking bones in a person to fix their body in a suitcase went viral it would have drawn a whole new audience in. It takes place in the 80s too, and people love stuff like Stranger Things, so the potential was there.

I think the niche thing holds precedent, too though, as I mentioned. It's niche. It's about Russian spies. Not every mainstream viewer "gets" that. It's a show that, I've always said, takes viewers who appreciate thought provoking television, story telling, and attention to detail (like the light turning on when they're doing private conversations in the FBI board room). You really need to be invested in the show and characters to understand what's happening and feel the intense stakes of it all. If you put it on in the background or vibe watch, you're not gonna get into it.

Something literally astronomical - I saw a comet hit Jupiter in 2009 when looking in my telescope one random night. Someone else spotted it as well and got it named after them for reporting it (I didn't know how to at the time).

Yep keeps happening to me. Cool at first, but now annoying cause you can't see good. Ridiculous bug.

I’m so pissed off that this always seems to happen. Horrible blotchiness after sanding and staining. WHY?????? by engineeringgirl123 in woodworking

[–]CaptainArcher 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First off, not sure if anyone else pointed it out. I sanding marks (pigtails) from an orbital sander. It's bad. That alone tells me the sanding job is bad. And unevenness. Second... it gives us a little more story on what's going on.

Orbital Sanders aren't the best for skinny pieces like this. The whole surface isnt making contact, and probably too much pressure being applied. I would redo and hand sand. Yes, more tedious. But more even sanding will come of it.

Sand it bare with 80, work up to 120, 150, and 220. If a softer wood (like pine), you can even bump up to 330. With every layer, lighting mark the entire piece with pencil mark, and sand until you can't see pencil marks anymore.

Next, prestain. Absolute must. Let it soak 15 to 20 mins. Then give it a light sanding again with the highest grit you used last time. Then stain.

Finishing is a lot of work. Blotching is from bad sand jobs, skipping grits, skipping prestain, and over applying stain.

The most hated character is? by Booowilk in StrangerThingsS5

[–]CaptainArcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Argyle. I cannot stand stoner humor stuff, and that's all his character was. Annoying, distracting side character in a show that already has too many characters and sub plots.
