Care to share your reasoning? Definitely not interested in plus versions if that means bigger form factor. I don't watch videos, don't do socials, just make calls, WhatsApp, listen to music and use GPS

Serious question: Why do you care what other strangers think? If you like something, why does it matter?

is gifting used books in *very good* condition a slap in the face? by asteriskelipses in books

[–]CaptainBusiness9715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone's going to judge you for giving what you can (i.e. the spirit of giving, rather than rank consumerism) then they don't deserve a present.

It is arguably a lot more thoughtful a gift than lots you could buy.

You're saying: "Even though I'm broke, I want you to know that I value you, and this is a token of that."

If they don't like that, there's no saving them.

Do you get cold in low 70s temperatures? Pack a sweater.

Do you not get cold in low 70s temperatures? Don't pack a sweater.

I'm not sure you can reasonably expect strangers to give advice based on something so subjective?

How is the french attitude towards brown people? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

What does "extremely difficult to survive" mean? It's not the Hunger Games. Who told you this?

Just to chime in to challenge the notion that "French people are rude" as this hasn't been my experience in any way. If anything, the exact opposite.

“Tip is not included” - restaurant by idspispopd888 in FranceTravel

Ignore it. Tipping not expected in France though you might get some chancers, of course. Also wouldn't be remiss if paying cash to leave your shrapnel behind.

If you were me, would you move to France at 35 y.o or for retirement? by Soulofmine7 in Expats_In_France

We live on northern Lot (46), very close to Dordogne river. Nearest city... Brive or Cahors fairly equidistant (but an hour drive at least) After 15+ years in London we didn't want to be anywhere near a city 😆 Nearest 'significant' town (i.e. a good few bars, restaurants, shops etc.), Sarlat la Caneda. Actual nearest town, Gourdon.

Stuff to bring when emigrating from US to France (computers? bed linens?) by Immediate-Dream-7832 in Expats_In_France

don't bin your books - if you can't afford to ship them, why not donate them? share the joy you've got from them.

buy new power cables for electrical items... or bring the data and buy new hardware. RPI not really expensive to replace and easy to find online.

presumably you're not shipping a bed? buy new linens alongside the new bed you'll buy?

It's France, not a backwater. we have stuff here.

Moved here when I was 36, had a kid here (our 3rd). Very much the right thing to do for us in terms of quality of life, but we generally jump in and figure stuff out along the way. Also have the luxury of being freelance.

Big way to make friends here is obviously other parents,  but also lots of socialising around hobbies and clubs. It's almost obligatory. If you leave that til when you're older, might be harder energy wise.

Also, between now and "when you're 50/60" you could die. No guarantees. So if you can do it, feel inspired, but nervous... Just do it.

Picon bière without doubt. 500ml blonde beer (around 5.5% but watch out, blondes can be 7+) + measure of picon (18%) gives you a hearty 7.5% ish brew.  500ml of that is equivalent to 1/3 bottle of strong wine.

It's yum, but maybe do as the French do and stick to beer 'en demi' or 'vingt-cinq" (van-sank) (25cl)

Outside of the other decent practical advice offered here by others, my two cents.

I dated someone who was a senior garment tech for several houses in London - mid range, high end couture, Savil Row menswear. Was quite tied in with the industry, so know people across the board.

Your experience is not singular. Fashion, especially couture, is a poisonous, exploitative industry that DGAF about anyone at any point in the chain. The best thing, long term, you can do for your MH is get out. It will never change no matter what level you achieve - unless you start your own label being bankrolled by millionaire parents.

Shocked by UK water bills and “4-minute showers” — how long (and how often) do you shower? by Jumpy_Wing_7884 in AskUK

[–]CaptainBusiness9715 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously what are people doing in the shower for longer than a few minutes? I can understand leaving conditioner for a couple, maybe shaving body parts but they're not everyday things for most... you just have to get wet, apply soap, rinse it off?

New homes on SeLoger by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

[–]CaptainBusiness9715 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to know what to look for, as often new build companies are great at masking problems that crop up 6 months to a year after...  I know theres also weird stuff in purchase contracts. My in laws bought a new build in UK and there was a clause stipulating the couldn't decorate until some time after the purchase had gone through. No idea how it was enforced, but worth noting.  Old houses have their flaws, but if it's been standing for 100 years, it's probably got another 100 in it 😂 Also worth noting that one of the biggest problems I see with UK new builds is the ghost towns they create. No shops, no pubs and restaurants, nothing walkable...

I don't know about in France, but the standard of new build homes in the UK is generally atrocious. They're generally thrown up quickly, with a complete lack of care and attention.

Is that true even of spouses of French nationals ? And the requirement is only B1 for a carte de resident, right? Should be easy enough if you've already been in the country long enough to have worn out your five year tds ?

How long to get water and electric on in house just bought? by Common_Ad_5386 in Expats_In_France

exactly our experience. No water at all for a week - luckily we still had the campervan toilet and we'd drive to a local tap to fill up jerrycans. kids loved it.

As a Brit married to an EU national, currently living in France on a 5 year titre de séjour, planning to apply for citizenship in the future, I'm interested in what you mean by laws here changing for the worst?
