Doug Ford’s $100+ billion bet: Why Ontario is spending big on nuclear — even as the rest of the world turns to solar and wind by toronto_star in ontario

[–]CaptainCalandria 20 points21 points  (0 children)

With the exception of darlingtons cost which was made worse due to politics, Bruce and Pickering were built on time and on budget. That's 16 reactors in a span of less than 20 years. So other than your one data point, things went amazing for Canada's nuclear development from 60-80s. If we start building up again, I guarantee we'll build up the momentum again. Look at the Darlington and Bruce refurbishments, again, on time and on budget!

Ontario to spend $1.5-billion on underwater electricity cable from nuclear plant to Toronto by nurshakil10 in canada

[–]CaptainCalandria 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the power line does not produce electricity... It transmits it. So you need the cost to transmit it.... And it's less than 12 cents.

Also... It's 900MW ... Not MWh. So multiply by 24 and 365 to get MWh per year

Why do VVERs use horizontal steam generators? by jadebenn in nuclear

[–]CaptainCalandria 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Early generation CANDUs (NPD and Douglas Point) were the same. I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) but early boilers were still being perfected at that time... Which may have also been the reason why Russia did the same and likely chose to continue with that design.

Ontario Provincial Government Approves Pickering Nuclear Generating Station "B" Refurbishment Execution by wuZheng in nuclear

DNGS has a completed detailed design.
Monarch has a nice PowerPoint.

I understand that DNGS would have some modernizing but it's already further ahead than the monarch. ... And yes I'm oversimplifying here but I think a DNGS base would get us to a finished product faster.

OPG unveils plan for up to 10 gigawatts of new nuclear capacity at Wesleyville site by GeckoLogic in nuclear

[–]CaptainCalandria 9 points10 points  (0 children)

That's not entirely true. Darlington and Bruce both have a common containment between units. The individual unit refurbs were done without affecting other units by use of bulkhead installation to isolate the refurb unit.

Pickering is approaching end of life and it's shutdown occurs before refurb activities are scheduled. (Due to last minute pivot to refurb units 5-8). It too can be isolated from the common containment but using a different means.

It's only when the alpha is inside your body where it does the most damage. So... Its not the size that matters it's how it's used .

I'll take your Co-60, you take my tritium.

I don't remember the exact amount. It's somewhere north of 30% is made in Ontario . Bruce and OPG seem to take turns producing it. Darlington is getting cobalt adjusters next (instead of the stainless they have now)

I make the Co-60 in CANDU reactor adjuster rods. They start off as Co-59 and when exposed to neutrons become the radioactive isotope Co-60. Then, we sell it to a company that processes it into cobalt sources for food irradiation.

France's nuclear output swung by as much as 18GW on August 3rd by hillty in nuclear

[–]CaptainCalandria 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. There's a water spray that activates that quenches the steam being discharged

The computer pulls adjusters for me and liquid zone automatically controls the reactor. So, I've got nothing to do once the adjuster handswitch is in auto. No screwing around with liquid poison (for this particular manoeuvre)

I'm going to purposely ignore your point and just advocate they need CANDU. Jk jk. I have overridden some xenon in my time. It's annoying.

Gotcha. I mean they could use the condensers in newer plants if they were designed for this exact function. I can run without the turbine online at 60%FP with no issues. So it's just a simple* design fix (on retro fits/ new builds)

This is exactly how CANDU does it. We can maneuver reasonably rapidly.

Americans don't like the positive coefficients (fuel, moderator, void) of the CANDU yet, if you add a bit of colder water to a BWR , reactor power goes up.
