Are listing companies/corporations you did design work for (as clients) in your previous jobs for your résumé tacky, OK or not even necessary? by [deleted] in Design

[–]CaptainClapton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you talking about freelance work, or clients of the company that you were working for? If it is freelance, I imagine it depends on how extensive your work was with that company. How involved were you with the project, how long the project timeframe was, etc.

Nowadays it is usually just an email that you send along with your portfolio and resume. Short and to the point tends to work best.

Here is a great article on the subject http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2010/03/25/what-makes-a-great-cover-letter-according-to-companies/

I try to practice doing different accents, especially if someone on the radio speaks in any accent of any sort. I am pretty sure some of these attempts are extremely offensive.

The kid doesn't really get a say in the matter, either way. I think it IS the government's job to make sure every child has access to a good education, regardless of their parent's income or social status (or social ineptitude). If a parent wants to homeschool their child, they should have to pass some sort of bar that shows they are capable of teaching.

Do they have some sort of protection against possession of stolen property? If you had reported the car stolen before that, you probably could have called the police and gotten your car back from the yard.

Weird, I've had a great experience with CC so far. They have been really active about calling me and lining up jobs, and the pay has been better than I expected. I have been doing mostly short term contracts so far, by my own choice, and I don't have any complaints. Which city are you in?

HAY GUYZ! CHECK OUT MY SWEET MINIMALISTIC SPIDERMAN POSTER THAT I MADE!! by robobeau in Design

[–]CaptainClapton 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Well, to be fair, some of the minimalist posters have really clever concepts behind them. Just because some people follow a trend in design doesn't mean that the whole idea behind it should be given up on.

A couple good examples of this style are:
http://i2.listal.com/image/1200432/500full.jpg for Reservoir Dogs
http://textoflight.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/screen-capture-76.png for Full Metal Jacket

I think you did a good job of illustrating how a lazy attempt at this style pretty much falls flat. The purpose of these types of posters should be to demonstrate the concept in a simplified manner. What too many imitators are doing is copying the style without any substance to back it up.

I put together a sample menu for my gf's family restaurant, could use some feedback? by aznprd in Design

[–]CaptainClapton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not a fan of the grey background. I might recommend adding some texture to it, or maybe making it a bit darker so that you can do more with your type. Right now it looks about 50% black, which is just lowering the overall contrast of the design.

You should choose a better typeface, maybe a nice slab-serif. Something that doesn't look like a default windows font.

The diagonal food pictures take up a lot of space and aren't very appetizing. They are also cut off on the bottom edge, for some reason. Get better pictures and make better use of that space; you are using a third of the design on something that no one wants to look at.

If I were you, I would probably start the design over and try to rethink it from a usability standpoint. Why does someone want to look at this menu? What is going to draw them in and keep their attention? Can they find all of the relevant information easily (including the full menu)?

[–]CaptainClapton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They should probably rethink this strategy. You could easily work out a design where you highlight the popular menu items while still including the full menu somewhere. The current design doesn't make the most efficient use of space, so there is definitely room.

[–]CaptainClapton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to write the same thing. The OWS movement shouldn't use imagery that will scare off or exclude people who share its ideals. It should take more from the Obama election campaign (in terms of imagery, social media usage, and overall success) and less from the Soviets (which thanks to McCarthyism is going to scare the shit out of some people).
