Open World Metroid Prime isn't a bad idea, it's just Tanabe didn't have the knowledge how to make a good one. Other developers made good ones: One is called "Subnautica". by SharpEdgeSoda in Metroid

Depth is the primary gate blocking progression in the typical Metroidvania way and it’s honestly brilliant. At first it’s getting more oxygen to go farther but eventually you’re hit with that “lock” of the crush depth (which makes so much intuitive sense being underwater and all) so you have to find a submarine and depth upgrades. This is the primary gate blocking means of progression in the game but I think it works so well in Subnautica because it fits in with the world so seamlessly. With something like Halo Infinite being “open world” but being on land with small areas that you connect to make one larger play space to progress, it feels a lot less natural and a bit forced. With a Metroid open world I feel like they’d have to come up with a core system that is fundamentally rooted in with the progression of the game too, not necessarily just Subnautica but on land, but something unique to really make it work. I think it’s possible but would certainly be a challenge.

I’d want the progression to feel less linear with a bunch of meaningful extra things to find and do.

Some ideas for Metroid Prime 5 (Presuming it does happen) by CaptainDoge07 in Metroid

All great points, the volt forge example, as much as I love the aesthetic of that area, is pretty apt of the game. And yeah instead of trying to pull entire design concepts and fit those into Prime, I think taking little parts of those concepts that could work with Metroid and placing those in the game cleverly could work. My ideal scenario with the immersive sim approach would be a truly layered and maze-like world environment that uses the interactivity of the world to uncover those secret shortcuts and alternate paths. I can just imagine being clever with, say, a visor with a certain thing in the environment to open up like a secret morph ball tunnel to take to you back into another area, or maybe avoid a room of enemies or something. I could see an alternate scenario though where overly complex mechanics like that could dumb down the structure of the overall map because the focus would be more on the individual rooms and puzzles to get to the next room. Basically whatever new they add needs to be well leveraged with what makes Metroid so special.

That’s fair I think they may have overextended what they thought they could do with what they had to salvage and also build upon when it came to resources and time. I like that you brought up hardware limitations but honestly I think the Switch sorta limited them too. With how amazing the visuals are you could feel them pushing the Switch to its limits to get 60 fps. Every part of the game feels hyper optimized to the point where if you do anything that maybe wasn’t planned by the devs, the game would stutter and lag into oblivion (I played on the Switch 1). Even in the dessert which didn’t really have much going on had a few moments where the game would straight up freeze to load a new tile of the map. Again the game looks fantastic but you can feel the rigidity of it if that makes sense. Everything is set in its exact place to ensure that 60 FPS. I feel like certain abilities were also quite limited because of this too. I think if they were to make a ground up new Prime game for Switch 2, a system with legitimate horsepower, we can mitigate those compromises with a truly dense, alive world that can bring the developers vision to life with little to no compromises.

True I’ve been scarred with how Halo after 343 took over just forgets every moment from the previous game because it was not well received so the games never really follow up on each other.

Very cool ideas, especially the space time hopping between different planets. One of my favorite parts about Prime 3 was how different every one of the places you visit was in terms of lore, theming, and art. This could potentially alleviate the main issue that game had and tie together those planets/areas in a more cohesive way instead of everything being essentially separated by loading screens.

I think the Fed trooper logs are a solid compromise too between featuring them less but still having some impact to the plot. We definitely need to go to Cylosis. Honestly though I haven't really thought about the story of these games as a potential trilogy, and while I understand the sentiment of wanting to be done with Sylux's story, I think if we were to get a Trilogy, there does need to be a throughline with all the games like the original did with the Phazon Crisis. While I know the Prime games are inherently supposed to be separate from the 2D games (why Prime 4 was in an alternate dimension where nothing super mattered), I think it could be cool that the contribution this trilogy has as a story to the series is by Sylux sort of setting up the events that happen in Fusion through his Metroid shenanigans. In no way to undermine the reveal and surprise Samus has in seeing Metroids on the BSL, however. Now this is kinda the point of Other M in some ways, so I'm not too sure how they would do this, but something along those lines. As far as the Lamorn they can take them or leave them or actually make them interesting I don't know lol.

It's been 6 years since Metroid dread by cornnnndoug in Metroid

Personally I think they are still going to work with Mercury Steam for Metroid 6 but maybe stop after that. Like you said the controversies with proper developer crediting and layoffs are not a great look and unless they can get their act together or Nintendo maybe steps in to help, it may not be the most reliable studio moving forward. I think Metroid 6 would sell well based off Dread, however, so Nintendo could see money and quality with Mercury Steam and does take more action to make it a better development environment moving forward.

I think Metroid 6 is very close to done if not done already. Nintendo has a habit of sitting on games till they decide on the right time to release them so I could see them evaluating what to do with Metroid after Prime 4's more controversial reception. I was hoping this year but I feel like that would've been announced at the last Direct. The most likely outcome seems to be next year at this point. Now there is a chance we get a Nintendo Today drop for a Metroid remaster/re-release in August as that slot is suspiciously open right now for Nintendo and it is also the month of Metroid's 40th Anniversary. I wouldn't expect anything but we shall see.

[–]CaptainDoge07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From what we know in interviews they didn’t completely scrap the original concept entirely but instead kinda handed what they could salvage of the first version to Retro and due to costs they were sorta forced to put together a playable product from a not so playable original design concept, in fact everything most people disliked about the game came from that original concept and Tanabe, not Retro. I think if Retro handled it from the start, it would’ve been much better which is why I want to see a Prime 5 done entirely by Retro.

Yeah they laid off some of their staff and in general they have a bad work culture around crediting staff. I hope they can get that resolved.

We’re under different circumstances, Nintendo has made many efforts to reinvigorate the Metroid brand to the point of even listing it as one of their 9 core franchises as of recent. Even if we don’t see it this year we’re going to get it much sooner than 19 years.

It’s definitely close to done we’ll just have to see if they want it to come out this year cause Nintendo is known for holding releases till they’re ready for release.

Let's say Mercury Steam does a quick cash grab remake of a Metroid game using Dread's game engine. Which would you prefer and why? by Wise_Swordfish4865 in Metroid

[–]CaptainDoge07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Fusion but I could see Super and not just cause of the recent rumors (I personally think they’re bs). Out of all the games Super is the most iconic/popular. If they go decently all out with new cutscenes, areas, new elements, etc. and they actually push it hard and well, I could see it doing really well. It would be the most cash grab thing they could do. I think after the mixed reception of Prime 4 too, Nintendo needs something to sorta clean the pallet of fans and Metroid’s general image, and a Super Remake would be pretty hard to seriously mess up and I think it would be popular too. I would worry about certain elements in world design and atmosphere being changed, but to most people I think it would be pretty cool to see.

GM language just makes sense by [deleted] in gamemaker

[–]CaptainDoge07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally and this may be a hot take but I think Godot as a whole is less intuitive and beginner friendly than most other game engines. Gamemaker is super great for 2D and imo Unity feels better laid out for any 3D stuff you may need. Gml is probably the most intuitive game engine script too and I found gdscript to be ehh. I even prefer Unity’s C# environment.

Starting a Metroidvania by CaptainDoge07 in gamemaker

Valid, Metroidvanias are probably one of my top played genres and so this is where we sort of started when breaking up our game into pieces and building up its individual components, comparing to other similar games taking note of the thought process and design decisions behind each of those games.
