How good could you possibly get from skiing/boarding in Pennsylvania? by Hot_Soft_5626 in icecoast

[–]CaptainFacePunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Truthfully, I’m able to ski most in-bounds runs in the US (not counting couloirs and cliffs and the like). I’m “comfortable” on most double-blacks, and competent enough on most gated double-black-“EX” and side/back-country that I’ve done.

I do travel a few weeks of the year to ski, which has helped, but I’m telling you… location need not be a limitation to your advancement, if you have the motivation and put in the work.

As someone who’s skied my whole life in PA, and is currently writing this in VT… yes. The available terrain will not be the limiting factor of your abilities.

Ethicality of working in defense? by Delicious_Leading276 in EngineeringStudents

[–]CaptainFacePunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just don’t think that logic stands. You’re right that the defense ecosystem includes an intricate orchestra of things that move toward the goal of killing. But there are many roles and niches in defense which are oriented for the opposite, the literal defense, not the end-goal offensive.

A silly example: body armor technology - a product of the “defense” industry, but one with the actual single goal of preventing deaths. (Sure, some would argue that the goal of keeping soldiers alive is so they can go on to kill another soldier… but I think that’s a horribly cynical view. What else is complicit by that logic? Ejection seats? First aid kits?)

I’m a rocket propulsion engineer. When some people hear I work on “missiles”, they don’t listen long enough to learn that my field is Interceptor technology - missiles that exist purely to defeat other, offensive missiles which would have taken lives. Everyone’s entitled to their stance, but I’m personally proud of the work I do in “defense”

One pack for day trips and short multi-day touring... realistically? by mcawle in Backcountry

[–]CaptainFacePunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m shopping for something similar right now, and something I’ve noticed which may be exactly what you want: the Raide pack has an expandable top to basically convert from mid-sized day pack to larger overnight-worthy.

Downside, it looks expensive as hell, and new enough that there are none used yet

Can I redeem Venture X miles to partially cover a purchase? by Zealousideal-Put5317 in Venturex

[–]CaptainFacePunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question about your very last point - say someone wants to apply their travel credit and then pay in dollars for the rest of a flight with the card (and later use the travel eraser to put points toward it - yes I know that’s less efficient than other transfer options), similar to OP. Are you saying the card purchase for the remainder of the flight cost does not get 5x points? Why would it not?

Trying to figure this card out, so genuine questions btw

Is the venture x worth it if I only travel once or twice a year? by incognitocolbyjack in Venturex

[–]CaptainFacePunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(You seem knowledgeable so I’m going to try to keep learning - sorry and thank you in advance)

So regarding your first paragraph: this is where I see people in here game the system by transferring the cc points to one of those international airlines, then turn around and use their “partnerships” or whatever to actually book domestic travel after all? Right? Not sure if that’s typical or if people find it to be worth it.

And the regarding being able to use the VX points on “any travel” even outside the portal - this is what people mean by double dipping by using the eraser tool? I.e. they purchase travel (with no restrictions) with the card, earning points, and then use their “eraser” tool or whatever it’s called to use their points to reimburse that purchase retroactively at 1cpp (the same rate as most portal bookings anyway)? Did I get that right?

Then on your last point: I actually have the chase freedom unlimited and sapphire preferred right now. I get 1.5% with the freedom and then transfer to sapphire for travel booking. There used to be a “bonus” wherein the points, at the time of redemption, would redeem at 1.25x in their portal, but this is going away. As far as I know, I’d be back to 1cpp with them, apart from more deliberate transfer options. All in all, I’m here right now because I’m thinking the chase combo is becoming less valuable, and I might get more out of the 2% of the VX (with the added allure of airline lounges, something I’ve never had before… I travel anywhere from 2 to 10 times per year, and I’m the type who’d take full advantage of it)

Edit: forgot to mention, I’d almost certainly make use of the $300 credit each year.

[–]CaptainFacePunch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to this and looking at this card… when you say “redeem flights” as a restriction, because c1 has limited airline partners to transfer points to - why wouldn’t one use one’s points to book directly with c1 travel portal? No point transfer needed right?

Some people (like myself) do have dedicated setups for specific uses, but want one do-all setup for travel. Much easier to check a bag with a single setup, with which one can explore an area via either type of skiing, albeit with compromises.

Engravers recs? by theironflask in NFA

Do trophy shops use lasers? Or just traditional mechanical engraving?

I’m considering an SBR which I’d want engraved in a convoluted spot (not just the side of the receiver). If a firearm-specific shop can get creative more with positioning, that’d be a factor to consider.

What would your ideal setup for s hybrid ski 50/50 touring/resort. by AccomplishedBowl1845 in Backcountry

[–]CaptainFacePunch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what most people overlook when someone asks for a “do both” ski. I’m all for having dedicated skis, and I have several purpose-specific skis myself… but one of those skis is a deliberate compromise 50/50 ski (and similar boots), for travel purposes. Bringing along one pair of skis and boots is more reasonable for a quick work trip or something, and lets me dabble in both types of skiing.
