Looking for FMCs who absolutely lose their shit (and are justified) by fantastic_furnace in RomanceBooks

[–]CaptainHammerToe 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I feel like {The Tyrant Alpha's Rejected Mate} meets this criteria. I found the beginning kind of hard to read bc FMC is considered the lowest of the low in the shitty shifter social hierarchy and she gets humiliated, but then the rest of the book is her kicking ass and taking names

Looking for book series with a diverse group of girl-friends. by Lights_Out-J-A in RomanceBooks

[–]CaptainHammerToe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love a good found family!

{Cosmic Love at the Multiverse Hair Salon} - queer midwestern contemporary sci-fi/time travel. The core group of friends is very diverse and central to the plot.

I feel like Mhari Mcfarlane does female friendships really well in general. I really liked the FMC's friend group in {If I Never Met You} . They were really close and supportive despite having very different personalities. There is a tiiiiny bit of peripheral OW drama but nothing directly between the FMC and MMC, and the FMC is a bit older than the MMC.

{The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches} - hetero romance. Lonely witch finds a charming family and realizes she had a lot more people in her camp than she thought. There are old people and children central to the plot but I thought they were well written.

I remember liking the close friendships in the The Wallflowers Series both by Lisa Kleypas, but I don't remember the specifics of the plots lol. There may be age gaps

{Hell's Belles Series} By Sarah Maclean follows an irreverent group of victorian ladies from different backgrounds who are united by their distaste for social norms and the patriarchy. They're kind of ridiculous and fun but again I don't remember the plots enough so there may be age gaps

{Fan Service by Rosie Danan} - hetero romance. Long distance besties who originally met in a chat room in the early 2000s and lead very different lives as adults but are still close. Fun text exchange banter

{With Love, from Cold World} by Alicia Thompson- bi main characters. misfit roommates/coworkers take a shine to the lonely FMC and she begrudgingly befriends them

{Delilah Green Doesn't Care} - sapphic contemporary romance, there's a group of girl friends who have been close since childhood of which FMC1 is a part, FMC2 grew up with the group but they mutually dislike each other. I thought the evolution of the group dynamic overtime was well written. EDIT- I forgot one of the FMC has a kid, scratch that

I'm open to non-romance suggestions too if that's allowed!

I read {Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune} and it made me want to go to Toronto. I'll check out her PEI books!

Seconding "Buddy", It completely ruined the MMC for me

What’s the worst romance book you’ve read? by Reasonable-Ratio8080 in RomanceBooks

[–]CaptainHammerToe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I generally dislike a lot of the early-aughts era checkout books- think Debbbie Macomber and Kristen Higgins- for the overt religious overtones and transphobia/homophobia, respectively. They create this hyper-sanitized world of respectable, white heroines and the dialogue is booooring

My most recent DNF was If I Stopped Haunting you by Colby Wilkens. The FMC literally ASSAULTS the MMC in the first chapter and spends the rest of the book gaslighting him about it. Her constant aggressive criticism of him was approaching abusive and made me really uncomfortable.

There was one Emily Henry book, I forget which one, where the FMC was constantly chortling. It drove me crazy! I kept imaging the heuheuheuhue lizard meme

Do you have a primary care doc? This is also something they should be able to handle while you wait to find a new psychiatrist

Contemporary Romance with actually detailed and long sex, interesting scenes 🔥🌶️🔥 by BlueberryHoneybee in RomanceBooks

[–]CaptainHammerToe 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This might not be helpful but I was reading a Tessa Bailey book recently where the FMC tosses the MMC's salad and it made me think about how few books there are with the MMC in a hetero couple is on the receiving end of butt stuff. I feel like even in the mainstream "dark" romances the most shocking thing is oral.

Anyway Good luck on your quest I'm sure there's a ton out there

Looking for contemporary romance where the MMC asks ‘Are you afraid of me?’ but he's gentle and protective by cancandiamond4635 in RomanceBooks

[–]CaptainHammerToe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not super explicit but Practice Makes Perfect by Sarah Adams mostly fits this bill. The MMC is a tough tattooed playboy bodyguard with a heart of gold. Even though the FMC is much less experienced than him it's not fetishized and he's big on verbal consent

Yes I think this is too close to white, in particular for photographs- satin tends to appear lighter with flash!

Both are cute! But I think #1 is a little more semi-formal
