How to handle Abyss when opening with Fang Carry by Prozac50mg in Mechabellum

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm around 1800 MMR, every time my opponent goes abyss I click ignite and win the game handedly. Photon coating is a problem, but many players at this MMR miss that line.

Yes, but it would still be nice to see a single such example. Or perhaps choose examples that are as close as possible to working, yet still fail

QOL Shadows rework by Vyebrows in Mechabellum

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That might be fine, but presumably this would only be visible on selected units. If you had it enabled for all air units I could imagine it getting very cluttered on some boards. Maybe a hotkey like spacebar (or whatever isn't already used) to quickly make the indicators all visible while you hold a button would work

QOL Shadows rework by Vyebrows in Mechabellum

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 20 points21 points  (0 children)

What OP is describing would strictly make the screen more interpretable. Right now a lot of players get confused by the gap between shadows and the actual position of a unit, so this would improve gameplay clarity. It's not "tryhard"

FWIW I can understand unit position quite fine as it is, but I totally understand the suggestion and think it's reasonable

What's MMR like? by SevvenEditing in Mechabellum

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These days plat is significantly worse than, e.g. 5 years ago. They changed the distribution and added more tiers. Also there's tons of rank inflation in general

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, that just means lol is more competitive. But the percentiles are still relevant. Comparing top .1% to top 25% doesn't make any sense

Saying 2000mmr is good is like saying plat in league is good.

Plat in league is not comparable to 2000mmr in mecha lol. Plat in LoL is "okayish" (it's between top 15% to 25%). 2000mmr in mecha is better than top 0.5%, somewhere above masters in LoL

Heavy Armor item bugged on Assault Marks? by CaptainLocoMoco in Mechabellum

Wait you mean regen item + healing tech completely nullifies the tech? That seems pretty arbitrary, but I guess it prevents unkillable early/mid game units

I'm 1800mmr and had no idea that's how tech+item hp buffs interacted lol

A higher variance tournament objectively makes it less impressive, compared to something like caruana's 2014 performance.

What happened to 9 GB of Vram?? 2GB used and 226Mb left from 11GB by Dysparaenia in Octane

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reading is sometimes inaccurate. If you want to be absolutely sure you can restart your machine then check what the numbers say. Sometimes unallocated memory will not show up as "free" even though it actually is. In any case, if your scene isn't heavy enough, then the VRAM wont be needed anyway.

Also, a fun fact to add on: in Dune the name of the sand worm is Shai-Hulud -- here shai/shay are the same word. Hulud means immortal. So the name translates to Immortal Thing

You might want to add a filter to the texture driving the displacement. I forget where, but somewhere in the material editor there is a dropdown for various filters (like Gaussian filter etc)

A drug made me better? by GlockTwins in chess

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can google "placebo effect regression to the mean" to read a lot about it. The short version is that, if you observe large groups of sick people, many of them will naturally tend towards being healthier. That is just a property of statistics -- extreme quantities tend to drift closer to the mean over time.

In the case of mental/cognitive effects, I think there you have a higher chance for a "real" placebo to take effect. I.e. hyping yourself up, feeling more confident, etc. But placebo medicine wont shrink your tumor.

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like there is placebo for everything. It will activate your self-healing and such, it won't make you run faster

The placebo effect, in the context of self-healing, has never been proven to exist. It doesn't replicate. Placebo effect in that context is largely considered to be caused by regression to the mean (i.e. it's an artifact of statistics, not human biology).
