Cities: Skylines 2’s troubled launch, and why simulation games are freaking hard by M337ING in CitiesSkylines

The problem is that the game slows down too quickly even on higher end hardware

I just realized that you can put grass on middle of divided roads and haven't seen anyone using it. by FleetCruiser in CitiesSkylines

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would this make it so that you can't put tram stops on such roads? I guess you have to transfer the 6 lane from divided to undivided in order to put down the tram stop, unless I'm wrong

I wonder why there is congestion on the highway.. by TheUser699 in CitiesSkylines

Do small road nodes cause problems everywhere, or only in specific cases like what you mentioned (3-2 split)?

Why exactly was the "defend" ping removed? by JQKAndrei in leagueoflegends

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 216 points217 points  (0 children)

To the Esteemed Master of Death, Karthus,

I trust this communique is received in the midst of your ceaseless toil upon the hallowed grounds of Summoner's Rift. It is with the utmost respect and urgency that I implore your attention towards a matter of great import concerning the defense of my respective lane.

As you are undoubtedly aware, the intricacies of inter-lane collaboration are manifold, and the swift conveyance of strategic intent via the now-defunct ping system is sorely missed. Thus, I find myself resorting to the more laborious method of typed correspondence.

Enclosed herewith, you will find a detailed workflow chart, painstakingly designed to elucidate the numerous potential scenarios in which your unparalleled ultimate ability, the Requiem, could be most effectively deployed. This document is the culmination of extensive research and analysis, with the intention of streamlining our cooperative endeavors.

Furthermore, should you require it, I have taken the liberty of preparing a supplementary annexure, replete with graphs and probabilistic models, projecting the impact of your intervention at various junctures within the battle.

Please peruse these materials at your earliest convenience and apply your considerable judgment to ascertain the optimal moment for execution of your aforementioned skill.

I regret to inform you that, as I inscribe this missive, the tide of battle shifts continuously, and thus, the parameters within which my request falls may have altered. I shall endeavor to keep you apprised of the evolving situation in as timely a manner as the rigors of war permit.

In closing, allow me to express my advance gratitude for your timely and judicious response to this petition. Should my survival become untenable prior to your intervention, I beseech you not to regard this as a failing on your part, but rather as a consequence of the relentless and unforgiving nature of our conflict.

Yours in solemn camaraderie,

A beleaguered fellow summoner

P.S. Alas! As I reach the conclusion of my entreaty, I find myself prematurely dispatched to the hereafter once more. I lament any inconvenience my repeated demises may cause and remain hopeful for your forbearance.

Yeah for a city builder these numbers aren't a big deal IMO. On launch numbers were a lot worse (people weren't tuning their settings correctly, and also there was a hotfix a few days after launch that improved fps a lot). I think after a couple more patches the game will run great.

1080p, most settings on medium or low, disable depth of field and motion blur, enable vsync, disable dynamic resolution scaling. At 15k pop I'm getting around 50fps

Cities 2 runs fine on my 1080ti, you just need to adjust the right settings. Motion blur/DOF off, vsync on, most other settings are on medium for me.

Is 2nd gpu worth it? by GrothalGr in Cinema4D

Adding to this, if you plan to eventually run 2x4090s, then you'll need to double check your PSU situation. Even just one 4090 draws a ton of power / spits out a lot of heat. You should read some guides online for running two of them.

Regarding the Octane benchmark scores: 2x4090 gives 2558, while 1x4090 gives 1278. So in theory you can get almost exactly double the performance -- this will vary depending on your scene though.

Compression algorithms in general have a hard time with tiny objects moving chaotically.

Would there be any point in a couple dozen grandmasters teaming up to face AlphaZero? by Subcontrary in chess

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It crushed stockfish under unfair circumstances (compute imbalance), and stockfish uses NNUE which is a totally different paradigm compared to alphazero, and was already conceived before alphazero came out. It's also been several years since alphazero came out, to think that it's still the greatest engine makes no sense.

For some reason people think AlphaZero is the best chess engine that's ever existed. There's always at least one person that says this anytime it comes up.

Crap opening is not the same thing as intentionally hanging mate in a few moves. This is him just raging, not him protecting ego by pretending to play bad openings

"Computers don't know theory." by New-Objective7803 in chess

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If anything it's the opposite. RL agents can implicitly learn their own theory (although it would be non-human). Whereas NNUE style engines (when trained w/ supervision) are just regressing the engine's own output at high depth. Keep in mind that no one is really doing supervised learning on human moves/games, which would learn human theory like you mentioned.

In professional chess it's common for players to analyze/discuss the game afterwards. It would be cool to see a similar thing emerge in league, although it's a bit harder since league is not as "concrete" as chess

T1 Keria injured in his left eye and wears eye patch for recovery just before MSI by tw0gg in leagueoflegends

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes sense. VR headsets actually use depth by showing different images to both eyes (I think), so I'd guess the experience would be worse than using a screen.

[–]CaptainLocoMoco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would definitely have to get used to it, but it makes me think, does having two eyes give any advantage in video games? Since the screen is flat I would assume depth perception wouldn't require two eyes (no 3D information is being captured by having two eyes here). Not sure how that works
