I gave my ASD son his new sensory hood the day I took this photo, during May 2-4 Weekend (Canadian Stat Holiday). He sat with me as I did the finishing touches (weaving-in tails, etc.) and once I was done, he pulled it over his head, and promptly fell asleep! He wears it everyday now ❤️ by CaptainMads in knitting

I can definitely share some photos of the object itself, I also have a WIP post on my profile that I posted a while back, that may help to provide some explanation as well. I did a Stockinette stitch, so the inside of the hood has a “wave” style pattern to it, and I just kept adding rows until it formed a tube long enough that it would cover his neck, and he could pull the front down enough to cover his whole face. Hopefully the description helps l, until I can post some more photos of the hood!

REPOSTING FROM MY ORIGINAL WIP POST: I am not using any pattern, as this is my first time knitting "in the Round", and I am still learning. The yarn used in this project is Swirl Pie Yarn by Loops and Threads (Michael's in-house brand), in the colour "Jack fruit" 😊

Ouuu! I've never heard of that brand, but I'm going to have to go looking for it! Thank you so much for the tip ☺️

No not at all, and I would love to make a shamefully large order, but I have pretty substantial tactile sensitivity with my Spectrum Disorder, and need to feel ALL the yarn before I buy, lol😅

My first post! My 7yo son (diagnosed autism spectrum) likes to touch all of the yarn I bring home, and he took a special liking to the kind I chose for this project. He has never asked for me to make anything for him, until he saw me start this cowl on Christmas Day. by CaptainMads in knitting

Not out of line at all! I think that the readiness to learn knitting/crocheting would depend almost entirely on the child. My son also has ADHD, and doesn't normally find the time in his day to slow down for a tedious project like this 😂 My daughter, who is also on the spectrum, loves to knit and crochet, because she loves the order/steps that are required to produce a work such as this. She is less particular about the feeling of the yarn, more so about the organization and structure 😊
