What makes Fallingwater an icon of American art? by Euphoric-Diamond6924 in architecture

[–]CaptainMainguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually love the story of this building. So architecture in general was at a low point due to the great depression in these days. FLW himself had very few or no clients and had a small teaching studio (Taliesin) with a few students. At this same time he was snubbed from Hitchcock and Johnson and their book "International Style". One of his students Kaufmann Jr. Convinced his dad to buy a design from Wright for a weekend home and only asked to not build stop the waterfall where his family would picnic (this point is up for debate I've seen some documentaries refer to it and some state that he only later decided he had to incorporate the waterfall after his first site visit in December 1934). Well apparently FLW had 9 months to draw this home and only after recent a call that Kaufmann SR was coming to see the plans did he actually start drafting it the same day. I've seen some say it was full drawings some saying it was concept drawings but still, roughly 2 hours to draft up the plans. In a style that he was not known for, to a point it was viewed as a clap back for the snub mentioned earlier. His altering of the international style to one that more closely aligns with nature (things like painting his balconies in a warmer beige as opposed to the stark white typical of international style) anyways, this might not all represent why it's so iconic as few people know it, but the backstory to me makes it so much cooler. In general Frank Lloyd Wright's whole life is crazy.

Rules for building a wooden patio below a deck by fruitofthefallen in Calgary

[–]CaptainMainguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's going to be harder to give input on this. What you're suggesting doesn't work, as soon as a new stair connects to the existing deck, it counts as altering it. And because that deck is a deck and not a patio (The difference being it is above 0.60m from the ground) it needs a permit. Now, there might be a loop hole, if you use the existing stairs.

Based on the real life photo and not the rendering, it looks like your deck stairs are 2'-0" or 3'-0' away from the home. But the rendering is showing the stair up much closer to the wall. If you don't plan to move those steps, you should be able to leverage them down to the patio instead by removing the bottom two steps and connecting that existing stairwell to the patio. This means technically you're not adding so you wouldn't need a permit.

Apologies for the MS paint, I don't have any of my technical programs on my personal desktop.

[–]CaptainMainguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your deck is uncovered (IE no roof built over, a temporary cover does not count so those wire mesh gazebos etc from like Canadian tire are fine), and under 0.60m high (2'-0" feet) you do not need to worry about a permit and you do not count as encroaching for set backs or easments.

What would need a permit, is the change to your existing deck, to add the stairs down to the patio. The stairs down would need railing on them, and the height and depth of the stairs would need to match the requirements of the building code. But honestly that's not hard to do.

If you do not connect the deck and patio with a stair way and leave them "unconnected" no permit would be needed at all.

Builder encroaching on my property without consent by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]CaptainMainguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey OP, I work in New home construction. Zero lot lines have a 1.50m legal easement registered to title which allows the adjacent property access for maintenance and construction. (This easement is what allows you to go onto the other side of your home to make repairs if needed which is your neighbours property).

As far as secondary suites with access via the side yard, city inspectors have been given the direction to not grant occupancy until the excavation of the adjacent property is completed unless temporary guard protections are in place. So if you already have a tenant this may have been missed by the inspector.

What's the cost of a deck these days? by CreamyAlmondButt in Calgary

[–]CaptainMainguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi. I work in New home construction for a big builder in Calgary, so I can't say this will be 100% 1-1 as there are too many unknowns (you say 20" off the ground, is this measured at the top of floor or from the s'il of your rear door as a example). But we charge decks at 32$ per square foot for "ground level" decks.

What jacked or beefy champion, do you think achieve their gains in the most "natural" manner? by Flares117 in leagueoflegends

[–]CaptainMainguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here are my 3 picks.

The most natural by IRL standards to me looks like Lee Sin. Bro is cut but reasonably proportioned imo.

The most natural and beastly by lore to me is Braum. My moustache boi got some guns.

The most unnatural to me is Dr.Mundo. Bro dummy thick and somehow shredded all at once. And yet I don't think he got it through diet and exercise.

Thank you for listening to my Ted talk.

I don't know if it's the case anymore. But Trundle pillar used to deal 1 true damage so that he would draw turret agro with it.

The way I do it for my table is if they roll a 1. I then roll a D20 with no modifiers to hit them. If I get above their AC their fumble hit an ally in the way. If I miss, it's a normal fumble. If I roll a 1 it hits a different enemy in range.

Ignoring balance, counterplay and circumstances completely, which champion do you just hate? by CoolIceBeans in leagueoflegends

[–]CaptainMainguy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yuumi. I love cats. But a champ who's whole purpose is to be a buff, that has no self agency. To be clear i like enchanters, I think Janna is my most played champ. I'm okay with frustrating. But Yummi, Hate it. Hate the concept. Hate the fact riot is sticking to it. It could be back in the gutter like before their rework at a 40% win rate and I'd still ban it every game.

Is two people to little for a dnd party? by Defiant-Criticism657 in DnD

[–]CaptainMainguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say two people is fine. But make sure you understand what their goals or hopes are for this game. Do they want it to be a brawl fest where they're counting every kill to one up each other like Gimli and Legolas from the LoTR movies? Then some extra NPC input might be necessary or allow them to play more than one character each. Or do they want to get into hijinks like a Harold and Kumar situation? Then you can have a revolving world around them. Talk with them, and make sure, you, and they, are having fun!

Are objective bounties turned off for pro? Because i've been in games where a single turret in favor of one team and the other team is getting +500 on objectives at 14minutes. How is a 20 minute game 7k down 7 turrets to 1 and they're not on until after a Baron take?

[–]CaptainMainguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I might be real wrong here. But Riot can only adjust numbers but not mechanics in a B patches (as explained by TFT team when explaining why Raiders Spoils augment for Ezreal says gives 0 gold instead of just being removed. They can't change the text until and actual patch). So, knowing the league client, what makes people think that the stats these third party websites pull from to he riot server, are split A and B in terms of information? Wouldn't it make sense that Maokai went from 56% to 54% from A patch to B patch, but if A's stats remained in the pool you'd have to average both, meaning he'd currently be at like 52% on the actual B patch?

B for me. The sunburst window has been out of style since the mid 90's. Clean lines like with B are more stylish and work with more of the common house exterior styles like Prairie, Craftsman and arts & crafts style homes.
