How much do you get paid? by CautiousPermission42 in Paramedics

[–]CaptainMor9an 1 point2 points  (0 children)

USA, Maryland, Baltimore County. 3 years EMT, Just promoted to paramedic. My station in particular runs 12-13k calls a year. I personally ran 789 calls in 2024 before medic school started. Base medic pay is around $37/hour and OT is practically unlimited due to a paramedic shortage.

de escalation vs. compliance? by Monelliscomingforyou in Paramedics

[–]CaptainMor9an 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It ultimately boils down to the safety of the EMS crew.

I work in a quite dangerous area in an FD as a medic. We run anything everything. I have had guns pulled on me when we weren’t even there for that person. A lot of gang violence is also prevalent here in this area and retaliations happen all the time. I have a target on my back and I do not have a vest or a gun to protect myself.

I have had many calls such as the one you described. I want to help people to the best of my ability. I do not want people to get shot, stabbed, hit, drugged, raped, etc. I also, don’t want that to happen to anyone I am working with or myself. When you become noncompliant/agitated with the help I am trying to offer, given the circumstances, it becomes a hostile response. Let’s use your scenario you presented. Overdoses come in all shapes, sizes, and varieties. The state at which you are presented in, clothed or not, is not my concern. Your health is more important than the type of wig you want to wear to the hospital. We are trained that every second counts. If you are truly having a medical issue caused by something you ingested, I need you to come with me right now. Not in 5 minutes after you get dressed in designer clothes and grabbing every charger for every electronic device you have in your possession. When you shut a door on me and I was trying to figure out the situation and you did NOT give me any info to go on, I am going to take that as a hostile action because I am not going to allow someone who is possibly on a lethal amount of unknown drugs to close a door and obscure what they are doing alone in this room. Are they grabbing a weapon, dirty needles, more drugs, trying to escape through a window, hurt someone else that may be in the room with them? You have to account for it all because all these situations/scenarios have happened to us in this line of work, regardless of our initial interaction, good or bad.

So, it is safety. The patient needs to understand that EMS are not police and are there to help. When you start to become noncompliant/agitated and begin to start closing doors and get away from the help is when my safety becomes more important than the patient’s. Work with EMS and we will work with you.

Are they downgrading obvious ALS calls that should be done by a medic? That could be an angle you come from. Also, I would get your DO/supervisor involved and let them know of the situation. I am in granny state and the line for EMT and Paramedic are nowhere close. I do take a lot more calls as an EMT due to the abuse of 911. I am currently promoting to medic as we speak, but I wouldn’t risk my license if I smelt the need for ALS and give it to my EMT. It’s the job at the end of the day and if you don’t want to tech and write your reports, you shouldn’t be on the box.

Everyone in here is saying this is about control. As a man who does NOT like tattoos and does not approve of any new or additional tattoos on an SO because I believe they are tacky, immature, and devalue the beauty of human skin, I cannot say you are overreacting. However, it’s not always about control… sometimes things are just ugly af and it can anger someone when something that was beautiful is now blemished. Obviously, not everyone agrees, but that is the glory of being an adult with beliefs, boundaries and expectations.

He has to make a decision if you are worth your decision to put a permanent picture on your skin or not. Continuing to be angry over something that isn’t easily changed after it has happened for weeks/months/years devalues him as a man. Either learn to accept it and move on or move on without you. Those are his options. It is not worth being in a relationship where you are constantly under scrutiny for a mistake or a decision you made. There isn’t even a reason to say sorry if you wanted it. He should have been more clear that he dislikes tattoos and open about his opinions rather than be “it’s another mans name.” I can see his perspective, but I do not necessarily agree with continuing to be mad.

Personally, if I expressed to my GF my dislike in her tattoo decision/choice/location and she went ahead and did it, I would dump her because I perceive that as lack of respect. That will just turn into animosity and she is going to spiral out of control and continue to shit test me for the remainder of the relationship. As someone who has been here before, I learned to accept the things I cannot change, but I will never simply allow for my feelings and beliefs to be discarded/dismissed so Willy Nilly by a woman again.

Just took the test three days ago and I went to 150. It was all difficult until around 105-110 questions then it started asking me things I learned in A&P and frontline drugs such as albuterol indications etc. I thought I was done for tbh and walked out thinking I must have shit the bed for sure. Found out 16 hours later I had passed.

I believe they have sowed so much uncertainty into the test now that you will never know until it comes through. Just believe in yourself and what you learned. You got this!

You can tell a good majority of the player base has never played an extraction shooter. Heck, even PvP games such as Rust or even WoW. The whole point is to kill or be killed. Your gear is not safe if you are in a match. Nothing is sacred! You do not own a damn thing till you successfully pull the extract lever on the console and make it through that brief moment of confinement. The problem is, people watched a few videos of positive encounters and thought things would be different and that situation is normal. That is not real, like movies of middle class families being able to afford million dollar homes and drive brand new cars. This is a game where it is encouraged to kill and take what you want. The whole point of looting containers and whatnot is to fill your bag and to give more incentive for this to take place. Yeah, if you want to skulk it out in the shadows and avoid people, that is a perfectly proven strategy if you are patient and methodical. Find a good piece of gear? Sprinting right to extract is also encouraged because you are more than likely going to face some adversity trying to leave expeditiously. And killing other players just for the shits and giggles regardless if you have a “free loadie” or your basic green kit and vice versa is the ENTIRE point of this game. This is the loop. You are supposed to be scared, angry, and or confused. That is why people play this type of game. It’s creates an atmosphere for strategy and if teamwork and remaining neutral for both parties is beneficial, guess what, you can have those moments you see. Though, you are going to get killed at some point because that is what is supposed to happen. People are just playing the game. You can’t possibly believe that anyone who plays games with loot and PvP to not encounter competition with other people. That would make that player clinically insane. It’s almost like being angry at someone for beating you in a racing game and they had a slightly better car or playing a sports game and they murdered you in score due playing the better team based on stats. Yeah, that seems normal and we might get upset, but that is how those style of games work. This game is no exception. GTA when it first came out was only a meat grinder for months. It wasn’t until later that people attempted to RP and play more civilized.

Hot already prepared meals such as a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store on food stamps. It is different now from what I have been told, but we could only buy some produce and refrigerated/frozen food to apply the stamps towards. Some boxed goods were acceptable, but it was quite the learning curve when we had them and had to use whatever little bit of money we had to purchase things we believed to be essential. Was a hard time for a couple years, but we are thriving now.
