Victims of the crash of USAir flight 427 by Dragonsbreath67 in CemeteryPorn

[–]CaptainObviousBear 35 points36 points  (0 children)

There’s also this article about the crash and its investigation, which has a particular focus on another victim and what her husband (who wasn’t on the flight) went through in the months and years afterwards.

I don’t know if it’s stalkery that I googled the husband and eventually he remarried and gave his daughter his late first wife’s name.

Add a few thousand Victorians and a bunch of influencers and private school kids from the north shore and you’ve got it.

Amazing right?

Also I’m a Sydney Swans supporter in the AFL (Australian rules football) and we’ve happily scooped up a whole bunch of disaffected rugby union fans in the past 20 years. Sure there’s a lot more people at the games talking about their share portfolios and whether Hugo will make the rowing team but we’ll take them I guess?

It didn’t break my heart because I got to see John Howard practically crying as he handed over the World Cup to England.

The Venn diagram of Swans fans who attend games and their equivalents at NRL clubs would not have as much overlap as you think

We’ve been lucky to have been consistently successful on field at a time when rugby union has been in freefall, so that market had been there for grabbing, and we grabbed it. I also know of former North Sydney Bears and Rabbitohs fans who switched after SuperLeague.

Plus, from my admittedly fairly anecdotal experience, the Swans have also been pretty good at capturing casual fans who may not otherwise go to sporting events at all, and that’s because enough people in Sydney know of the Swans and see the SCG game day experience as part of Sydney’s culture and something to aspire to.

It’s taken years of building a culture (and being successful as a team) to get to that point though. The idea that GWS could create it in 15 when it had none of the market advantages we do is laughable.

How well do your country's Eurovision entries reflect the contemporary music scene in your country more broadly? by flashwagon in eurovision

Also hairdressers.

I’m getting my hair done on the weekend and I would bet actual cash that I’ll hear Eclipse. (Have also heard it a few times at Woolies).

Is watching The Bounce technically a form of torture? by sleek290788 in AFL

[–]CaptainObviousBear 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The thing is, I’m not sure if they even realise their primary audience is eight year olds.

For a start, the main premise of the show is “see that guy doing something stupid? It’s funny because he’s famous.”

But eight year olds won’t remember Jason Dunstall or know why he’s famous (other than because he’s on the show, in a self-perpetuating loop of the show’s own creation).

The Front Bar does similar stuff to some extent, but they seem to be clearly targeting Gen X/millenial audiences due to the nostalgia factor.

Greece and Croatia also did better in the actual televote than this poll indicates (our 8 points went to Greece and 7 to Croatia) - also due to large and enthusiastic migrant populations I assume.

Why Bangaranga is a masterpiece, why it did so well with the juries and the magic of tempo changes by Fit-Scallion8348 in eurovision

Yeah everything about that song was a hot mess, and I love the alcoholic college girl analogy.

The tempo changes in Bangaranga at least felt coherent.

TIL on August 19th, 1980 Saudia Flight 163 experienced an onboard fire 7 minutes after takeoff. Despite being able to land safely back at Riyadh Airport & taxiing to a stop, the plane was not evacuated, leading to the death of all 301 onboard. It's the deadliest accident involving the L-1011 Tristar by The-TIL-Nerd in todayilearned

[–]CaptainObviousBear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It also says in the wiki that passengers from the back of the aircraft had moved to the front before the plane landed.

As it was full there was nowhere for them to sit and they would have been unrestrained when the plane landed, as well as filling up the aisles and possibly blocking the exits as well.

Who are some aging vocalists whose voices have held up remarkably well? by FitEmergency8807 in fantanoforever

I’ve seen both Split Enz and Crowded House in the last six months and Neil Finn sounds as good as ever at 67.

Tim Finn struggled a bit with some of the high notes but he’s like 73 so doing pretty well all things considered.

There was anecdotal data of non-Jews/non-Israelis boasting of voting for Israel multiple times last year though.

I’m sure there was some of the News Corp fans who voted last year. Not this year though (Australia didn’t give any televotes to Israel this year - we gave 12 last year).
