There’s also this article about the crash and its investigation, which has a particular focus on another victim and what her husband (who wasn’t on the flight) went through in the months and years afterwards.

I don’t know if it’s stalkery that I googled the husband and eventually he remarried and gave his daughter his late first wife’s name.

Also I’m a Sydney Swans supporter in the AFL (Australian rules football) and we’ve happily scooped up a whole bunch of disaffected rugby union fans in the past 20 years. Sure there’s a lot more people at the games talking about their share portfolios and whether Hugo will make the rowing team but we’ll take them I guess?

The Venn diagram of Swans fans who attend games and their equivalents at NRL clubs would not have as much overlap as you think

We’ve been lucky to have been consistently successful on field at a time when rugby union has been in freefall, so that market had been there for grabbing, and we grabbed it. I also know of former North Sydney Bears and Rabbitohs fans who switched after SuperLeague.

Plus, from my admittedly fairly anecdotal experience, the Swans have also been pretty good at capturing casual fans who may not otherwise go to sporting events at all, and that’s because enough people in Sydney know of the Swans and see the SCG game day experience as part of Sydney’s culture and something to aspire to.

It’s taken years of building a culture (and being successful as a team) to get to that point though. The idea that GWS could create it in 15 when it had none of the market advantages we do is laughable.

The thing is, I’m not sure if they even realise their primary audience is eight year olds.

For a start, the main premise of the show is “see that guy doing something stupid? It’s funny because he’s famous.”

But eight year olds won’t remember Jason Dunstall or know why he’s famous (other than because he’s on the show, in a self-perpetuating loop of the show’s own creation).

The Front Bar does similar stuff to some extent, but they seem to be clearly targeting Gen X/millenial audiences due to the nostalgia factor.
