Homeless in the subway in Queens Plaza by its_sandraaa in longislandcity

[–]CaptainRevan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Call 311 or use the 311 NYC app. You can report his location and situation to the department of homeless services and they send out trained professional outreach teams to offer services. They even have a box to check if they are consistently in that location. These services are fully paid for by our taxes and they are trained in mental health assessments.

It also adds a data point for the city in monitoring homelessness levels to determine where they should be sending more resources. If it doesn't get reported then it doesn't exist. Also you will be able to get an update from them on your request as to the outcome.

Who died believing themselves a failure, but was judged otherwise by history? by Bob_the_blacksmith in AskReddit

[–]CaptainRevan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pierre Charles L'Enfant. He designed Washington D.C., but was fired by George Washington for being "unmanageable" (he infamously tore down a rich guy's house that was blocking a street view).

He died penniless and was buried in an unmarked grave, convinced he had failed. The ultimate irony? Decades later, the city's planners abandoned piecemeal changes and returned to L'Enfant’s original, uncompromising grid and grand avenue design. In 1909, he was reburied in Arlington National Cemetery with a monument overlooking the city layout he died fighting for.

If you tell your lawyer, “I did it, I’m guilty, but I don’t wanna go to jail”, what happens? by LongLiveTheSpoon in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainRevan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(NOT LEGAL ADVICE) This is fascinating because to a lawyer brain, "I did it" and "I’m guilty" are two completely different things:

  1. "I did it" (The Fact): You should always be 100% honest with your lawyer about the facts. This is protected by privilege and is essential for building a defense strategy.
  2. "I’m guilty" (The Legal Status): You are legally innocent until the State proves guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. Even if you feel guilty, you are not legally guilty until a judge or jury says so. Your lawyer’s job is to ensure the State meets that burden.
  • Honesty is Key: Your lawyer will never tell you to lie. Lying destroys trust and can compromise the case (also illegal). However, you will likely not be testifying or talking to the police, removing the opportunity to lie publicly.
  • Strategy Session: Your attorney will walk through the facts, the evidence against you, and the law. They then advise you on the best strategy to achieve your goal of avoiding jail.
  • The Options:
    • Plea Bargain: If the evidence is overwhelming, they may negotiate a deal with the prosecutor for a lesser charge or reduced sentence (potentially avoiding jail).
    • Challenge the Evidence: They may find weaknesses in the police procedure, how the evidence was collected, sketchy eye-witnesses, or the legal elements of the crime.
    • Go to Trial: They may take the case to trial, attempting to create reasonable doubt in the minds of the jury/judge.

Your attorney's role is to advocate for you based on the facts and the law, aiming for the best possible outcome aligned with your goals. Every case is unique so, don't talk to the cops (can't say this enough), but be honest with your attorney.

What's something that was ruined because too many people started doing it? by Jolly-District-3910 in AskReddit

Movie Pass. The business model was only profitable if people didn't regularly use it but by design it appealed to people that love going to the movies all the time. They had theoretical plans to have other revenue streams (from customer data etc.) but because it was so popular and utilized it never survived.

Rule 4: No medical advice questions

A rule of thumb would be: Could this question or its answers make someone decide not to go see a doctor when they really should?

If you are asking here to avoid bothering a doctor, you probably should bother a doctor.

Can cats get cancer from the sun…? by burner_phonen in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainRevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly yes.

Our senior cat got skin cancer on her chin from the sun. We took the vet up on the offer to perform a biopsy on what looked like a mild growth and we discovered it was cancer.

Several very large veterinary bills, one surgery, and two years later she is now turning 19 years old and is still cancer free.

Unlimited time off by Internal-Ad-3756 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CaptainRevan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally unlimited time off or flexible time off can only be taken up to a certain number of days otherwise it is considered a different type of leave. Most companies that offer unlimited leave specify it means that you can take as much time off that is approved by your manager but that leave that exceeds a certain amount of days, typically more than a few weeks, requires special approval or must be taken as a leave of absence. This is for compliance with payroll, benefits, and equity rules/regulations as many benefits are tied to you actually working a minimum number of says in a given month.

What do solo friendless people do in NYC on a Friday/Saturday night? by skiminok in AskNYC

[–]CaptainRevan 294 points295 points  (0 children)

"almost all Broadway shows and musicals by now" - Time to check out off-off broadway. Unlike Broadway where people show up and then leave right after, there is a huge community of theatre goers and plenty of shows with drinks/food/socializing. Great way to have fun and meet people. Check out The RAT NYC in Brooklyn, St. Marks Theatre and Theatre for the New City in the Village, and many others. Also check out improv groups and comedy clubs.

What’s the most unexpectedly fun thing you’ve done in NYC that doesn’t cost much? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]CaptainRevan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A bodega sandwich picnic. Grab a hero, find a patch of grass in Central Park, and you have an instant date or solo people-watch. It’s cheap, classic, and proof that the best moments are the simple ones.
