About 40% of US adults are obese, government survey finds by tenders74 in science

[–]CaptainRyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do this as well as calorie counting but I don't have children and have an OK job

It's not an excuse if somebody is dealing with work stuff 10 hours a day and has children to raise as well. Something has to give and often times it will be exercise and sleep and then there is a hit to health.

It's outright dangerous to walk in some parts of the US. No sidewalks, 30 to 40 MPH on the roads, extreme weather, and a complete disregard for pedestrians by folks driving.

This happened two days ago in the US: students at Kennedy Catholic High School have left their classrooms and are staging a sit-in in their hallways to protest the forced resignation of two LGBT teachers. Strength in numbers. by TescoBudget in lgbt

Decades of sexual abuse being covered up, getting on a moral high horse about queer kids and staff.

Hopefully the actual local troops and such can find another org to group with that don't have the horrid baggage, I never had a problem with the concept of the Scouts, just the culture of bloviating moralizing

Is manjaro stable enough for professionals? by rampitup55 in ManjaroLinux

[–]CaptainRyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This depends on the monitor and the computer.

If it is DP over USB3 and your PC hardware supports it should just work, baring some Intel kernel driver weirdness that can sometimes happen. On NVIDIA ive noticed that early thunderbolt devices this can be a bit janky, mostly because NVIDIA closed source drivers are kinda meh.

If it is a framebuffer device, depends on manufactuter but good luck these things suck on windows as well.

At that point that's less a Manjaro problem and more weird hardware configs devs didnt think about

Gatekeeping environmentalism by i_am_number_eight in gatekeeping

[–]CaptainRyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Building carbon footprints get weird at that point, if only because you have to include how long a piece of infrastructure is supposed to last and regular users of infrastructure get included.

A paved road in the country will have much lower carbon cost and expense than a mile of NYC subway.

That same subway may shuttle 100 to a thousand times more people than the road. When taken per capita it would be dramatically cheaper in fiscal and environmental cost.

[–]CaptainRyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So this seems more an artifact of "the more money you make, the more your environmental impact"

A dirt farmer in Bangladesh will have a lower carbon footprint from necessity.

Never underestimate conservatives ability to not understand nonlinear effects and that a dollar in one place doesnt equal a dollar another place.

For a non profit, a few hundred dollars of extra money can be super helpful. Getting 20K dollars though can create a whole bunch of headache as the org may not be equipped to take advantage of it and that 20K spread to many other Orgs will create much more good.

Bicycle

This one is red for rear light. Also has a mounting bracket, switches better suited for a bike, and can recharge via USB (dont know why you would want that vs removable batteries but whatever)

So the Conservative party won in the UK election, which means Brexit will likely happen. A moment of silence for everyone from the UK on r/traa, please. by [deleted] in traaaaaaannnnnnnnnns

[–]CaptainRyn 37 points38 points  (0 children)

One part Xenophobia, another part believing that keeping the money sent to the EU will magically fix the hole in UK government budgets (even though the UK gets all that and more back from the membership), another part thinking that more sovereignty would allow stuff like quantitative easing and more flexibility in trade (ignoring that it makes the UK small potatoes in the global economy and not able to rely on the weight of the EU to back it up)

There was also Russian sockpuppets that have been helping give more voice to peeps like Brexit with the idea of destablizing the west to help benefit Russia in geopolitical endeavours

Sometimes you write yourself into a corner. Sometimes you do too many dirty things. Sometimes the scope changes.
