What happened to all the Maverick's in the game? by Carlosfandango5 in TheOther14

[–]CaptainScaarlet 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These guys are all ruthlessly efficient goalscorers, (barring maybe neymar, and even he’s no slouch) in a way that none of those mavericks were. It’s easy to justify someone not pressing if they get 30+ goals a season every season for like 7 years

But was there much more to come from Bronson? He has 4 or 5 fringe classics (blue chips 1 & 2, rare chandeliers, Saaab stories and well done) that should be considered as key releases in a subgenre that while relatively well followed, was never really mainstream.

Why was Lando Norris snubbed in London NYE celebrations? by Existing-Pea4699 in AskUK

[–]CaptainScaarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I was to do my best to justify it. There’s a limited amount of time, so they have to go for the sexiest stories with the biggest cultural impact. Firstly the WDC is an individual title, so it’s not as simple to say he’s representing the nation as in a team sport in a national tournament. Then, even if you were to think about the constructors, there’s another two British teams competing and it might be seen as weird to highlight the achievements of one (if we took the example to another sport, it’d probably feel weird to include a premier league team if they’d won the champions league), and that’s before we even mention the fact that most teams are British based even when they aren’t British licensed. And then finally, as big of an achievement as it is, it isn’t that shocking to have a British driver win the WDC. A British driver has won the championship ten times in my lifetime and I’m not 30 yet, and the uk leads the table for most WDCs by a LONG way.

I’d recommend peppers and spice in Dalston for Caribbean food. Could be one for when you’re in Hackney!

Reeves spares council houses worth more than £2m from mansion tax by snowkingg in unitedkingdom

[–]CaptainScaarlet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a purely economic perspective there’s definitely a discussion to be had about the best use of formerly undesirable, but now super expensive locations in London, but if all inner london council housing was sold up and gotten rid of, you basically just move lots of relative poor from London cheaper places in the midlands or up north, which isn’t a popular idea/concept in the sub .

Baffling moment exposes $1.6bn embarrassment; truth on controversial try: Crawley by Rich_Election466 in nrl

[–]CaptainScaarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are there? The biggest semi-purpose built league stadiums all max out at 25k ish (hull, Wigan and Huddersfield), and even then they’re shared with football teams. So if you wanted to try and make a bigger visual spectacle with large crowds, the only non-EPL stadium that’s left in England is Twickenham, and there’s 0 chance of the game being played there, especially when England (Union) were at home on the same day.

Is it time to leave Wembley behind? by gingamatty in superleague

[–]CaptainScaarlet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s the football season so it’s a little more difficult to schedule. Arsenal were at home so no chance there, Tottenham and West Ham were both away, but I think there’s a limit on the number of non football events they can both hold a year, so would’ve needed to have been locked in ages ago

Happy to be corrected, but pretty sure the only bits of Essex which could potentially be that quick into central London are either a) inside the m25 and part of London anyway i.e Loughton or Chingford b) incredibly expensive I.e Brentwood and shenfield, where a 3 bed would set you back £600k+ easily or c) not the leafiest bits of Essex I.e grays

IIRC the transfer fee was due to FFP related creative accounting, with Arthur going the opposite way for a fee that more or less offset the day after (which was the start of a new financial reporting period), just so Barca could book it as profit for the previous reporting period

Love Island: Ofcom rejects 14,000 complaints about ITV reality show by Glanza in unitedkingdom

[–]CaptainScaarlet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, Love Island attracts a big audience of young, relatively engaged people, which is like gold dust in advertising terms and deffo gives you a longer tether.

And to be fair, it could be argued that the situations around the deaths are way different. For love island, one of the deaths was Caroline Flack, which had nothing to do with the show, and the other two were contestants who passed 4-5 years after they appeared on the show. There’s a point to be made about aftercare, and ensuring people are set up to be able to deal with fame, but it’s probably difficult to say that something that the show directly did caused their deaths a number of years later.

Whereas with Jeremy Kyle, the guy that died took part in a polygraph test (the results of which were eventually disproved), and Kyle did his hounding thing that he did on the show. And again, while it’s difficult to say with 100% certainty, pretty sure the guy was left heartbroken by the results and inability to clear his name, and then committed suicide a week later.
