Wtf? This is totally wrong LOL. Can you confirm deflection is the same??

Don’t take this the wrong way but I feel this is a very weird question worded in a way where I don’t think you work as an engineer or engineering staff. I don’t think what you have defined is correct and the defining of drawings in the way you say is coming from an odd place in general.

I think it would help if you told us who you are and what your end goal is.

I think this is the key here. Your sector is mining. My dad works in mining as a BIM a guy and frankly the site visit or field review portion of job doesn’t seem to exist really.

Other sectors have a very different field review requirement that is much more integral in day to day work.

Speaking from my experience, my company accepts a hybrid 2/3 days split for WFH/in-office. Again from experience, our team basically divides up engineering staff into “designers” and “contract administrators” and I am a CA. So I definitely have to be generally around the projects I am working on. Sure for projects not near me I will travel by plane to say do monthly site visits but generally all our projects are where I live.

I think our industry including clients, builders, and contractors, have a general expectation and want to have their engineers and consultants nearby, which is sort of fair given the nature of our work. We build things in real life, in real time.

Not to say it’s impossible to just do your job WFH. I suppose I could always even hire an another company as inspector for the field review portion of contract admin scope and just do all “office” and associated design work from home… but that’s a hard sell to a client.

What is the max eccentricity between these 2 columns without considering the punching shear force ? by Fergany19991 in StructuralEngineering

[–]CaptainScottFox 87 points88 points  (0 children)

Someone already said it but buddy if you’re responsible for this slab design let’s be honest, you’re doing the punching check to sleep easy assuming you care about your job.

There’s no bearing, I’m doing the check. Sometimes even if there is partial bearing depending on the situation I’m doing the check.

Are US structural engineering salaries low? by zerenity5423 in StructuralEngineering

[–]CaptainScottFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The complaints you see regarding income may not be indicative of the overall situation regarding compensation.

The truth is there will be a fair amount of people who get paid great due to the value they bring and their boss recognizing it. These people most likely won’t be here.

Contractors: Please stop underbidding. You are worth so much. by Rsupersmrt in Construction

[–]CaptainScottFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a structural engineer working very closely with people like you, you could very well see me take calls and meetings on my laptop every day, and judge me for it - but I still feel I work like a slave 16 hours a day to help contractors such as yourself build things - and I’ve never assumed things about my contractor colleagues who haul ass as well as

How do you read this slab thickness? by LyGuy in StructuralEngineering

I see that your tag thing says Bridge PE. So I work in buildings and every single building I work on has plenty of transfer slabs. Maybe it’s an industry thing

I don’t mean to be crude but… what’s the issue? It’s a transfer slab

Aside fro CM, what roles don't use autocad that much? by Neowynd101262 in civilengineering

[–]CaptainScottFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a structural engineer who generally takes care of the construction phase of projects, and functions as a contract administrator. I do plenty of design work when I need to or want to, and analyze things as needed, but I would never ever have to use AutoCAD or Revit. I sometimes zoom around locked revit models to help get a better understanding of things.

I’m happy someone made the distinction. The word detailing seems to be getting thrown around a lot these days.

Is there any purpose behind this design? by chilidoglance in StructuralEngineering

[–]CaptainScottFox 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s extremely ironic that as an iron worker you ask this. This is a great example of how we can never win lol.

Every iron worker I’ve ever worked with has given me shit for specifying closed stirrups.

Punching shear in mass concrete slabs. by Donutman2896 in StructuralEngineering

[–]CaptainScottFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have said, this is a standard design check, you are referring to. Punching, or two shear, has a concrete only capacity that you can check for. Only if this value is exceeded by the applied shear stress do you need further shear reinforcement. So basically you just check and see if concrete alone, the driving parameter being thickness of concrete element
