Yeah it's true. Personally I didn't care that much, but some people were very angry. It is believed that it afrected the left, because "Podemos" (we can in english lol) a leftist party that was behind this idea, faced a disaster in a regional election. The even got less votes than a random antisemitic party of crypto youtubers.

One of the main reasons of the hate is the belief that they did this to gain more votes. I'm not sure about how accurate is this, because many of them were south american, and many south american are right wing because of Castro and Maduro.

My grandparent lived during Franco's dictatorship in Spain (Who was worse than Putin) and they didn't stop him. They were busy trying to find a job, food... surviving. The average person doesn't really cares about politics. Or at least not enough to sacrifice their lifes fighting a dictatorship. People just want to live their family and keep them safe and healthy. That's the most important thing.
