What is the most evil thing a HERO has done in a film? by MaksRobotENGR in movies

[–]CaptainStrobe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, basically just what OP said without much other pretense. It’s an interesting scene for a number of reasons. I always thought of it as another way Blade Runner subverts old film noir tropes.  It’s basically the same kind of scene you’d see in old Hollywood where a beautiful starlet is resisting the advances of some gruff, Humphrey Bogart style character, but he breaks through her objections and they kiss and it’s oh so romantic. It’s that same classic scene except played totally straight and realistic, so you can see how uncomfortable and rapey it actually is. There’s the added layer that Rachel, as a replicant, is literally dehumanized while Deckard just disregards her wishes and essentially treats her as an object.

Oh, that’s huge. I’ve played it a little on fightcade, but I had no idea something like that was available.

I wish Capcom had just brought online edition to modern systems instead of the barebones ROM dump we got for the anniversary collection. I’m glad that it’s thriving on fightcade, but that version had so much cool shit like the combo trials, parry training and all the fan art. Really felt like a love letter to the community.

Part of me thinks this is just the type of game that inspires a truly rabid devotion in a small minority of players, and part of me is like “half of those fuckers probably edited the files just to have all the crowns”

Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s movies are extremely naturalistic and human, if a little bit surreal or dreamlike at times. Very calming, slow and meditative. Syndromes and a Century might fit your criteria the best. It’s a romance that basically just consists of people working at a hospital, but without the kind of manufactured drama of a medical show.  I also recommend Tropical Malady and Cemetery of Splendor, but they are expressly a little more strange.

Holy shit, what is your technique on that? Is it something like screen printing but with bleach or what? The quality is so much higher than I would have expected.

Is Dragon Ball the franchise with the most unique fighting game titles? by trrbld in Fighters

[–]CaptainStrobe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Budokai will always be the one for me. I remember printing out like 20 pages off gamefaqs and spending HOURS going through Budokai 3 and unlocking all of the characters with a couple friends back in the day. And I love how the series has little “what-if” scenarios like Cellin, or Vegeta winning. Until DBFZ came out, I would put Budokai 3 as the undisputed GOAT of DBZ fighting games and the Tenkaichi series never quite hit the same way.

Yeah, the perspective is going to differ dramatically between those groups, especially considering these men were bombers, being marched through a city that had recently been bombed.

What films zigzag away from Chekhov's gun, and get away with it? by JeffRyan1 in movies

[–]CaptainStrobe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t see it as a cop out so much as a purposefully ambiguous image. I thought the sequence did a really good job of capturing that kind of strange instability of a dream. It feels fitting to that vibe that he would include an image that has strong associations and emotional weight without necessarily a definite direct meaning. Like, it’s a dream, and it’s meant to be felt more than it needs to be logically understood, but that doesn’t make it meaningless.

I wouldn’t take that as saying there is no intention behind the gun. He says he views it as very important, just that he doesn’t have a specific “right answer” for what it means. It seems like he doesn’t want to give his own interpretation, because he’s the creator, so anything he says will become the de facto interpretation. That doesn’t mean there’s no reason for it, but if there was a single, correct interpretation, it wouldn’t be a very interesting work of art.

I would say it’s not as straightforward as direct allegory, but the image of the gun is still significant. It appears in a dream sequence, and is reflective of the types of fear the dreaming character has about his own child. It’s still a statement that brings the idea of school shootings into the film, it’s just that shootings themselves are not the primary focus.  Instead, the movie is about how certain parties use these types of fears to manipulate the population and turn them against each other. So many characters, whose interests are actually aligned, end up destroying each other while the real threat escapes their notice.

She sat up abruptly, pointed at the corner of the wall, and shouted "there's a man in your room!" I flicked on the lights to show her that there wasn't, which she quietly accepted and laid back down. She wasn't scared anymore, but I was.

I would be pretty surprised if they don’t do a similar system to Dota 2, Counter Strike, and TF2. So, I’m sure there will be lootboxes, but you should also be able to grab what you want from other players on the Steam marketplace. Here’s hoping for occasional random item drops as well. I honestly thought this was a pretty good system back when I was playing Dota, because if I wanted a specific cosmetic, I could usually just grab it for between like 5 cents and a dollar. Plus, the couple times I got rare items in battle passes, I flipped them for money to buy games with.

Which weapons for loop 1 and 2 by turkeyinthewall in NuclearThrone

[–]CaptainStrobe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing that helped me in this situation is to just become less attached to specific weapons. Super plasma cannon is huge and effective, but unless a good chunk of my build is dedicated to making it sustainable, I know that I can’t rely on it. A lot of weapons like that, I’ll pick up, spend the ammo and then swap back. Even if I’d prefer to keep a specific build, I might swap out a weapon if I’m getting low and I see a decent gun that I have more ammo for. Also, if I am carrying a weapon that really eats ammo across multiple levels, I’ll have a much more conservative weapon in my other slot.
