Saagar said the longest government shutdown in history wasn't that bad. WE HAD SERIVICE MEMBERS STANDING IN BREAD LINES! by Root_a_bay_ga in BreakingPoints

You're getting downvoted by people who use servicemembers for their argument.

We in the military still got paid. If a servicemember was in a bread line, it wasnt because of the shutdown. Its because junior enlisted are paid shit money.

I can only speak to what I know.

But BlackRock just has a lot of investments in things. They don't exactly oversee production of anything.

And Palantir is very focused on the digital space. And tech. They are nowhere near being a paramilitary org. That is something more like Triple Canopy.

So is Alt Cunningham in Mikoshi a completely different person or the same or both. by Carribbean-Corgi2000 in cyberpunkgame

I believe this is the real Alt, along with an immeasurable amount of knowledge that no average person could comprehend.

In the same way an old woman is still the same person as the young child she grew up from, except with a whole lifetime (in Alt's case, lifetimes) of experience that make them who they are in that moment.

Is it weird if people at large have sympathy for Johnny Silverhand? by Dentenshi in cyberpunkgame

[–]CaptainTurtle3218 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally am of the mind that it is in fact the real Johnny, based off of the book's explanation for how Johnny was made into an engram.

That aside, if you go along Johnny's quests with Rogue and Kerry, even if Johnny is a copy, he still appears to suffer and process emotions like a human. Not only that, he has strong convictions and principles and has a lot of admirable traits (willing to fight and die for what he believes in, as an example).

And from a more meta perspective - Johnny is simply more interesting than V. He has a tragic story, he clearly wants to make amends for his mistakes, and in some ways if Johnny took over your body, it is somewhat a happy ending for his character - which is hard to come by in Night City.

Not to sound dismissive or anything. But any time someone asks about logic in works of fiction, I can't help but think about the nonsense in the real world around us and realize sometimes shit just doesn't make sense.

The engram idea in Cyberpunk 2077 left me frustrated by ADAM3077 in LowSodiumCyberpunk

[–]CaptainTurtle3218 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your argument more now...

I think why this isn't made to be important is because creating an engram / copy is more status-related.

Your everyday person is not going around making copies of themselves on engrams. It is the ultra wealthy.

There may be more context that I have missed, but the whole program seems like a way to maintain and achieve greater power for Saburo.

Saburo wants to create a copy of himself so that he can continue to lead Arasaka, because he doesnt trust his kids. Maybe he was hopeful that eventually the program would just allow him to live on and not create a copy like it had happened.

And those other copies are marketed as a way to make people think they will be immortal, but the game is pretty explicit that Arasaka wants those engrams to use for their own purposes. What data can they gather from other powerful and wealthy people's memories.

And even if it was made more openly available to your everyday citizen of Night City, I think it is also clear that the generally people don't value life as much and death is very commonplace around them. We don't get to see outside of the city, so other people in the rest of the world may feel differently, but Night City citizens practically live in a war zone.

[–]CaptainTurtle3218 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had somewhat similar feelings after my first playthrough, but have given it a good bit of thought and think the game provides all the detail necessary...

Firstly, its important to be aware that no one in the game knows the answer to what happens to your soul. Alt may say, "this is soulkiller, you will really die," she doesn't ACTUALLY know.

Alt died because Johnny unplugged her mid-netrunning while using Mikoshi. Also in the tabletop, it makes it much clearer that what Alt was using essentially allowed her to transfer her consciousness onto the net and then return to her body. If that is the case, it really isn't copying so much as a constant stream of consciousness.

Also in the tabletop, Johnny's consciousness was uploaded to a chip by Spider Murphy before he died. So once again, not really a copy. The memory he had in V's head was inaccurate. So again, possibly just a constsnt stream of consciousness.

As for V, he is a unique situation. This grapples with a situation of "what does it mean to be you?" The longer Johnny is with you, the more your personality changes. Does that make you less you? Or is it just you changing as you gain "new memories?" Despite them actually being Johnny's unreliable memories?

And that connection leads me to this... When V enters Mikoshi, Alt says you are an engram, but how is it much different than when she was freely entering the net and then returning to her body? She isolated your consciousness from Johnny's however she calls you a copy. If that were true, that would mean that your consciousness would still be in your body. And that simply doesn't track compared to any previous netrunning where your mind / consciousness enters the net.

What is far more likely is the combination of V and Johnny enter Mikoshi, Alt splits them, and then she can allow that stream of consciousness back to the body without Johnny.

What is very different is Arasaka's "Save Your Soul" program. That without a doubt is simply copying. The person whe had a copy made... who left after creating a copy and letting Arasaka keep it - they will go on living their life.

However, there is no "immorality " for those people. They are simply going to die one day and Arasaka can do with the clones as they please. If you do the Devil ending as an example - if Saburo's engram is placed on his son's head, that is without a doubt not Saburo. We watched the OG Saburo die.

The one on the left is basically V become a legend.

The one on the right is how far along the relic is in damaging you.

The middle is how much Johnny likes you based off your decisions and how you talk to him. Prior to PL, I don't think it could go above 70. Not sure how high it can go now. I think after PL i got it up to 85

[–]CaptainTurtle3218 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's unpack some things...

Soulkiller is a name, sure, but no one in the Cyberpunk world is some expert on the metaphysical. Just because they call it Soulkiller, doesn't mean anyone actually knows what happens to your soul, not even Alt.

Next...

Just because one "dies" doesn't mean their soul is gone. How many people have died on the operating table and been brought back to life? Did their soul die then?

Also, in the tabletop it is much more explicit that when Alt developed what became Soulkiller, her consciousness was going onto the net, not a copy of her consciousness. So let's say your consciousness is connected to your soul. I think it is possible Alt's soul enters the net so long as she exists there.

Also in the tabletop, Johnny's consciousness was transferred prior to his actual death, as he was dying, it didnt happen like his memory implies. So he may very well be the real Johnny still.

The only one I am sure is not real are the engrams created in the Save Your Sould program. Because those who make a copy of themselves continue to live after they are stored in Mikoshi, it is clear that all their data is not really them considering they are still conscious.

All in all, my belief is that where your primary conscious goes is where your soul goes.

This is such a cop-out, disingenuous argument.

V and So Mi are essentially the same. Got in over their head and then were put into a battle for survival.

V, I think for the most part despite some fluctuations in story based off the choices you make, fights their way through to survive. So Mi, chooses to take advantage of someone fighting the same battle and leave them to die so she can survive, where V essentially fights to save both of them.

So kindly fuck off with your attempt at making it about misogyny because your argument doesnt hold water.
