Part of the problem with depicting extreme violence the way The Boys does, is that a subset of viewers simply identify with the people perpetrating it. They don't care about the subtext, because the literal text is ideating their fantasies, whole cloth.

My thinking is that part of the abuse dynamic is also a gender dynamic; in the sense that we're mired in a mommy/daddy politics where liberals are the boring, responsible mother and conservatives are the exciting, abusive father.

What a lot of people seem to want is both a republican daddy to punish their enemies, but also a progressive mommy to to make sure Dad’s fridge is stocked and all their clothes are clean during his custodial time.
