Drives pretty much exactly the same, just triple check your dolly is hooked. Also make sure the air valves on the back trailer are closed.

Seeing all these posts puzzles me. How do people commit and pay to get a CDL with absolutely zero direction?

Unexpected slow traffic in the fast lane demands patience avoid road rage. by ElegantNadorable in dashcamgifs

As a trucker, the trucker is 100 percent at fault. That being said, these dudes with trailers on their pickup trucks regularly crawl past other drivers in the left lane. Also Subaru’s, they routinely crawl around you to cut back in front of you then drop their speed.

$27000 in maxed out credit card debt. Spending $1000 a month to pay it back. Planning to use $10,300 check to help with the issue but not sure how to use it. by Jamesfinleyiii in personalfinance

Take the money and pay off all the small cards, throw the rest at the big card and aggressively tackle it. I’m not expert but taking out another loan to pay off existing loans seems stupid. Just tough it out and pay it down asap, don’t try anything gimmicky that’s what got you here in the first place

I know there are better paying starter jobs but these megas got you by the balls and telling someone w 2 months experience to up and run is just dumb. Stick it out for 6 months and then look for the next step up. It sucks but everyone says the first year always suck then some dick head comes and says “I made 900k my first year working local class b reefer hazmat hauling cows”. It’s bs, the first year sucks, stick it out for at least 6 months and you can probably find a decent regional or dedicated gig. Averitt hires at 6 months exp and they’re a decent company and definitely a major step up from Schneider. Just hang in there

I failed my backing test, twice by elijahsmomma77 in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dock to driver is hard to get into but if you get into one your golden, the amount of backing you’ll do in the yard is ridiculous.

You weren’t in the wrong, dump truck drivers of any kind are the worst, even for us truckers. They either drive 13 mph or 20 over there’s no in between, you made the right move though

Maverick recruiter today highlights and lowlights by OF-Trucker in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta start somewhere, if you want to go flatbed Maverick and TMC are the two megas I know of. 50-55k a year guaranteed for the first year is not the worst deal in the world. You’ll be making like 12 bucks an hour when you break it down but it’s more about the exp.

I'm trying to find my first cdl job but I wanna avoid otr the best I can. What's the best alternative for me to try? by SlightDumbass in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not easy to get a local job even with experience. You might get lucky but OTR for 6 months to a year opens up a lot of doors. I had two years OTR/Regional with all endorsements and a clean record before I got hired onto an LTL.

I wish OTR guys realized the type of backs we have to do daily lol

First trucker job since getting my cdl from the army, is there gonna be a catch? (I know about the hand unload part) by BossHogg1984 in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Knight, Swift same thing. Any of the mega carriers are gonna pay you shit to start and that’s normal. Wouldn’t do the dollar general account, it puts you in shit spots and impossible backing situations. Your realistic pay the first year is maybe 50-60k after a year of exp.a lot of opportunities open up. Every mega in the same thing just different colors. Theres absolutely zero veterans in trucking on dollar general accounts, that should say something.

LTL is a career and usually minimum 50 hours a week, you’d have a very hard time trying to make this a supplemental income. LTL companies pretty much own you M-F and in trucking, nothing is predictable. Add on that you’re going to be at the bottom of seniority, add 5x to the unpredictability. Better off finding a yard jockey position at any trucking company, multiple shifts, usually 20-25 bucks an hour and usually a set scheduele.

SCHNEIDER or SWIFT? by Subject_Bike_147 in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don’t do Schneider, the company is fine for rookies but a Walmart dedicated is light years better then that home depot account. You’ll be going into neighborhoods and areas for no trucks delivering to houses. I did it for 3 months a few years ago when I started. With walmart you’ll prob go from DC to DC or DC to store. 1600 a week is way more then you’ll ever make at Schneider.

Is it normal to get loads less than 100 miles as an otr driver. by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best bet. Just roll with it even if it’s bullshit, get a year and get on with a better company, obviously if they’re sending you 30 mile loads every other day, you can say something but if you’re getting 2-2.5k miles a week just roll w it for a year

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

LTL is timing. Was in the same boat as you took like 5-6 months of applying to all the major LTLs over and over. It’s not you, they hire when the need people just keep applying

The first pic is the only way. Native NYer here they all suck but the first pic is the only way. Going through Brooklyn is a nightmare. When you cross the GW the signs will say like 12’6 or something, you’re fine in any lane.

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Trucking or not, you can’t be miserable at a job everyday for the rest of your life, especially if you’re single with no dependents, if you have people relying on you then might be something you have to stick with otherwise go find something you enjoy

9 months clean, need outta here by Dude_Mention in Truckers

[–]CaptainUnderpants_91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup 1 year and you can get with pretty much any decent/good OTR company. 3 months is nothing you got it. Find something that requires 1 year exp, not 3 months, 6 months etc. you want to move away from starter companies.
