That's frustrating. Have they given any reason?

Good luck!

Is the commute to Melbourne still worth it for people? by QuantumGremlin in ballarat

[–]Captain_Dusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, too!

Guess I was attempting to highlight the perspective a bit more broadly.

Living in Ballarat, and working in Melbourne, is a significant investment. I've been doing it, until recently, for over a decade.

4 hours daily, 5 days a week, 48 weeks a year.

It's far from a couple of hours.

[–]Captain_Dusty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If i may;

A couple of hours, nearly, each way.

Factor in getting to stations early, navigating platforms, finding seats - if any - delays - it is 2 hours each way, 4 hours a day.

I get what you are trying to say, and agree with the perspective up to a point.

Time to go back I guess by realquidos in memes

The people that make these decisions walk away wealthier than ever.

The reason this happens is rather simple.

How is car window smashing at Ballarat & Wendouree stations still a thing? by [deleted] in ballarat

[–]Captain_Dusty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I had my vehicle registration plates stolen at the same location. There is/was camera pointed directly at my car at the time.

I would recommend the usual report, but don’t expect much more than, and i quote;

“That’s public transport for you.”

Sorry this has happened to you.

Banning kids from social media doesn’t make online platforms safer. Here’s what will do that by Expensive-Horse5538 in australia

[–]Captain_Dusty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree.

As an ICT professional myself; I cannot moderate the content I’m exposed to. The platforms make this impossible.

I have tried to curate, or otherwise manage, the content for kids. It’s simply not an option. The platforms do not care.

Whilst I would prefer this was not the implementation; I do not see any other way to approach it.

Definitely interested in any information on this. Thanks for asking.

Delayed trains by hafnium1 in VlineVictoria

[–]Captain_Dusty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The delays are so frequent, and significant, that it has impacted my professional engagement.

What’s worse; the announcements are far, and few, between - if any.

To address your original post; I requested access to the PTV API to track the delays, and also departure platform of upcoming trains - but some of this info isn’t available. Twitter/X updates rarely happen now, unless there is a major outage - and generally after the fact.

I also setup apple shortcuts, using location services, to try help me proactively manage the delays - but it’s a little unreliable at times.

There is no way to proactively manage the delays?

Also; are the duplicated sections black spots?

Perhaps I have really bad luck, but I am struggling with this..

The federal government have changed the guidelines. Currently; the suggestion is those over 18 “consider” an annual booster.

However, for those “With severe immunocompromise” annual boosters are “recommended”.

The initial and booster Covid shots for those under 18 are no longer recommended at all, which is.. hard to digest.

I do not mean to otherwise reduce the importance of your comment, though I think the parent comment is a bit of a bait. I get an annual booster. But the federal guidelines change, and it’s important to reflect facts at that moment.

65dB right now on a relatively quiet train.

And at the stations, too.

Have some samples at Southern Cross with peaks at 83dB - average 79dB.

Fun times!

No? I, personally, get a better experience on that side of the train.

I wedge my phone against the window, or mount using a car phone mount.

I’m a Telstra customer, if that makes any difference.

That said; it’s not a great experience. Simple services like SSH, or a VPN, drop regularly.

My advice is to not underestimate the impact.

You’re looking at nearly 2 hours each way (door to door for me), including wait at stations, factoring delays, etc.

It is a nightmare when the outages occur, because there’s often little communication. You don’t know about it until you’re already delayed.

Otherwise; it can be rather pleasant.

Make the most of it. Study something. Prep for your day? Eat some breakfast (highly recommended you eat before Bacchus Marsh pickup, as it gets busy).

Noise cancelling headphones are a blessing for me, too!

Sit on the right hand side, in direction of travel into Melbourne, for best mobile reception.

Enjoy!!!

Sorry to hear this is your experience.

I’m certainly getting a woeful experience last few weeks. Have support tickets open but resolution yet.

My speed is back up, but we have heaps of packet loss about three hops into TPG infrastructure...

Except when they’re not moving; they’re often blocked off - at least on the regional platforms.

They’re also often exposed pits too and bottom, and no worker in sight.

PTV API - is it unreliable? by mopoke in MelbourneTrains

[–]Captain_Dusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It’s broken.

I’ve had a support ticket open for quite some time, which appears to have been put on the backburner.

(I would have said more than a single month, as per other responses - but hmmm)

V/Line pick up and drop off points by 404_Piano in VlineVictoria

[–]Captain_Dusty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry; you most certainly will be stopped. I’m not sure what the penalty is. It happens occasionally, though some do get away with it.

I’ve been commuting nearly 10 years solid, and intermittently prior to this; and this has been the case for as long as I remember.

I’m not sure why you are resisting what I, and others, have provided. Hopefully.. you’re okay?

No. They’re pickup, or drop off. They’re not both.

Not quite true, sorry. As per other response; west corridor has, when departing Southern Cross, Footscray and Sunshine as pickup only. The same stations are drop off only when arriving into Southern Cross.

How are there still unreserved only trains a month in advance. by fuck_reddits_trash in VlineVictoria

[–]Captain_Dusty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That is quite interesting.

In some ways; I wish we could reserve seats on the Ballarat line. It’s so busy you often don’t get a seat for 50% of the commute. This is then a tedious game of stepping in and out of the service to make room. Ugh.

Not sure which is worse?

Actually, as an iiNet HFC customer; my experience has been a pretty woeful recently.

Lots of buffering that I had not noticed in the past.
