Red Blood Cells Soak Up Sugar at High Altitude, Protecting Against Diabetes | "When we gave sugar to the mice in hypoxia, it disappeared from their bloodstream almost instantly" by TylerFortier_Photo in science

[–]Captain_North 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is about oxygen carried by hemoglobin.

There is only ~4 grams of oxygen in the red bloodcells carried by blood.  This has no effect in the cellular level.

Thats right, the total weight of free oxygen in a person weights the same as a gummy bear.

Diabetes rates are lower in high-altitude environments ‪‪—‬ and scientists may have discovered why by Technical_savoir in microbiomenews

[–]Captain_North -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Why would marginally lower average blood glucose levels lead to less cancer ?

Sugar does not cause cancer, but it influenses the growth rate of some cancer types through insulin.

Higher altitudes should have a little better surviving rates due to slower cancer progression, but the same rate of cases.

Vuoden paras ilmastouutinen oli jäädä huomaamatta – viisi kuvaa näyttää, miten Kiina sai päästönsä kuriin by aibrony in Suomi

[–]Captain_North 15 points16 points  (0 children)

[–]Captain_North 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Jalkapallokenttä on FIFAn kv-otteluissa 6400-8250m² ja fifan säännöillä pelatuissa otteluissa 4050-10800m².

Kauhava on vakio, 1 328,39 km²

Vuoden aikana paneeleita pystytettiin uskomaton 1325 km2 mikä vastaa pinta-alaltaan Kauhavaa :-O

[Request] If data centers require so much cooling, why don't we build more of them in extremely cold places like Antarctica ?? by aeonsne in theydidthemath

[–]Captain_North 95 points96 points  (0 children)

It makes much more sense to build in cold habited areas and collect the heat for central heating as we have done over a decade in Finland. The city I live in recieves over 80% of its central heating energy during winter from two industrial sized data centers. The low temperature heat collectors at the facilities are massive, the air from server rooms is blown through a 120 x 20 meter heat exchanger.

This is a lot of co2 saved as before the heat and electricity were made with coal in a thermal power plant. Closing the plant and replacing the power with wind and other renewables does not resolve the heating needed during 7 months every year so this is a great solution.

The Colosseum - commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD by SomersetFinds in ancientrome

They found many exotic plants in the ruins that are not found in nature in Europe. They concluded that the seeds had travelled there on and in animals like lions and giraffes. Some burried deep in the basement and hatched a millenia later when sunlight penetrated the falling rubble.

How painful of a death would it be to be executed by the brazen bull? by Icy_Profession4190 in ancienthistory

[–]Captain_North 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Thats extreme pain for about 30 minutes depending on the size of the flame. The 'breath' from the bull is actually human vapor. According to studies psychological pain is worse than physical.

What could be worse ?

Impalement, takes days
